GM Sports Car Sales Down 23 Percent To 12K Units During Q1 2024

GM sports car sales decreased in the United States and Canada during the first quarter of 2024 but increased in Mexico.

GM sports car sales are comprised of the Chevy Camaro muscle car in either coupe or soft-top convertible body styles, as well as the Chevy Corvette coupe and hard-top convertible.

GM sports car sales were down overall, as was the Chevy Camaro, but Corvette sales were up during Q1 2024.

The Corvette outsold the Camaro by 5K units, a ratio of more than two-to-one, during the first quarter of 2024, though the two are vastly different vehicles competing in different segments. That difference is clear when reviewing sales in their respective spaces below.

Individually, Chevy Camaro sales in the expanded mainstream two-door sports car segment placed it third among a half-dozen entries, though it primarily competes in the two-door muscle car segment, which comprises the top three models in this list. It earned an 11 percent market share in its segment.

The expanded mainstream two-door sports car segment contracted 21 percent to 31,236 units during Q1 2024, meaning Camaro sales significantly underperformed the segment average in this expanded segment.

Meanwhile, sales of the Chevy Corvette continued to dominate the premium sports car segment among nine entries during the first quarter of 2024 when ranked by sales volume, as they have for more than a dozen years now since we started tracking Corvette sales. It commanded the field with a 64 percent segment share.

Notably, many of the segment contenders here cost significantly more than Chevy’s mid-engine sports car. As a result, these higher-priced rivals typically see lower sales volumes. However, that price difference is steadily shrinking, as we can see by reviewing the starting MSRP for each Corvette variant, destination freight charge (DFC) included:

The premium sports car segment shrank five percent to 13,303 units in Q1 2024, meaning Corvette sales outperformed the segment average.

Looking Ahead

Not surprisingly, Chevy Camaro sales took a downturn to start the year as the Bow Tie brand’s discontinued muscle car moves any remaining inventory off dealer lots. The last example has been built due to faltering Chevy Camaro sales and notable missteps. Going forward, GM President Mark Reuss sees the next-gen Camaro as an electric pony car.

Meanwhile, production ended back in December for one of its chief rivals, the Dodge Challenger, which will be indirectly replaced by the first-ever 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona, for which GM has no rival and can’t build one.

However, the Ford Mustang continues on for 2024, now in its seventh generation.

C8 Chevy Corvette sales continue to command the premium sports car space, with a 64 percent segment share during the first quarter of 2024 being its highest yet. Not surprisingly, demand for the C8 range continues to outpace supply as the first-ever mid-engine Corvette is now in its fifth model year already.

The first-generation Camaro’s internal program code name was “Panther”

About Chevrolet Camaro

The 2024 Chevy Camaro arrives as the sixth generation’s ninth and final model year, featuring a pair of special-edition variants. These include the 2024 Chevy Camaro ZL1 Garage 56 Edition, as well as the 2024 Chevy Camaro Collector Edition, both of which offer their own unique content and varying levels of exclusivity to pay homage to the first-gen Camaro’s internal program code of “Panther.” The Collector Edition was offered on all trim levels, but only the ZL1 could be ordered with Panther Black Matte paint, the first matte paint option ever offered on the Camaro.

Additionally, the 2024 Chevy Camaro ZL1 Collector Edition includes a Shinola Canfield Sport 45mm watch, which is now being shipped to owners.

Final units of the Camaro Convertible were produced this past November 22nd, and the last Camaro Coupe was built on December 14th, bringing production of the muscle car’s sixth generation to an end without an ICE successor in the works. 2024 marks the end of the Bow Tie brand’s muscle car – at least for now.

GM built a total of 1,335 units of the 2024 Chevy Camaro Collector Edition.

“Camaro is a passion product,” a Chevy spokesperson said of the end of the Camaro, noting that “it has developed a fan base across the world and has brought people into Chevrolet dealerships for generations.” In summary, “the sixth generation specifically represented athleticism and composure – exuding confidence on the road and dominance on the track.”

Fans of the performance nameplate are finding that every Chevy Camaro Collector Edition has this cool Easter egg.

Recently, Hendrick Motorsports debuted a 40th Anniversary Edition of the Chevy Camaro, which will be sold exclusively through select Hendrick Automotive Group Chevrolet dealerships to add yet another special variant as the iconic muscle car sunsets.

Looking forward, GM has confirmed a next-generation Chevy Camaro to keep the nameplate alive, but we don’t know when we’ll see it. Global Chevrolet Vice President Scott Bell stated, “While we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro’s story.”

The Camaro name may not be applied to a single model but to a broader EV sub-brand. Some of the models would likely resemble the familiar Camaro with coupe and convertible variants, while others might be sporty two-door and four-door crossover SUVs, with a mid-priced sports car as the brand flagship.

About Chevrolet Corvette

The 2024 Chevy Corvette adds new active safety tech to its features list to bring it more in line with other Bow Tie brand models. These include Automatic Emergency Braking and standard IntelliBeam automatic high-beam headlamps as well as Lane Keep Assist and Lane Departure Warning.

The 2024 Corvette also gets new driver mode selection animations and a new infotainment system incorporating Google built-in features.

The 2024 Corvette Stingray also drops two alloy wheel choices, replacing them with new designs. Check out all the 2024 Corvette wheel options. Furthermore, the 2024 Corvette gets a new Edge Red painted rear fascia script as an LPO-level option.

The Stingray’s M1L transmission gets a case design update and, critically, will no longer require two extra quarts of transmission fluid for track use. It should be noted that GM does not condone tracking M1L-equipped vehicles without the Z51 package.

GM debuted the first-ever 2024 Chevy Corvette E-Ray a year ago. It features the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 LT2 engine from the Stingray mated to an electric motor mounted up front. The E-Ray is also the first-ever production Corvette equipped with front-wheel drive and all-wheel-drive traction.

That combination also makes the E-Ray the quickest Corvette ever, with a 0-to-60 mph time of just 2.5 seconds, a tenth of a second quicker than the Z06.

The Corvette Z06 features the 5.5L V8 LT6 gasoline engine, a race-bred, naturally aspirated, dual-overhead cam, flat-plane-crank powerplant.

Originally, we reported that the 2025 Corvette C8 refresh would bring noteworthy changes to the interior, with the most significant change expected to be the deletion of the HVAC controls found along the large center divider between the two seats. However, spy shots of the 2025 Chevy Corvette ZR1 prototype interior show it unchanged from that of the current C8 models.

The 2025 Corvette will get a new interior color, new Z06 wheels, and more, including three new paint colors.

In April, GM teased the forthcoming 2025 Chevy Corvette ZR1, which will debut in the coming months, with the tagline “The Unthinkable is Coming This Summer.” It’s expected to be powered by a boosted variant of the 5.5 V8 LT6 engine found in the Z06, raising the performance bar even higher.

  2. If the next version of the Camaro is an EV it will be devastating to the Camaro brand especially since Ford just announced they will never build a Mustang EV. Ford had listened to it’s customers, hopefully GM will get the message as well.
