Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Camaro sales kept the muscle car in third place in its segment from the previous quarter, as it has remained for quite a while now when ranked by sales volume during Q1 2024. The Ford Mustang (see running Ford Mustang sales) kept the lead with a seven percent dip in sales to 13,707 units. The discontinued Dodge Challenger remained in second with a 14 percent slide to 9,737 units, with sales performance decreasing each quarter over the past year. Finally, the discontinued Camaro (see running Chevy Camaro sales) saw sales drop 54 percent for 3,574 deliveries.

From a segment share standpoint, the Camaro earned a 13 percent share, down 10 percentage points year-over-year. The Mustang posted a dominating 51 percent segment share, up eight percentage points, to account for half of all sales, while the Challenger held a 36 percent share, up two percentage points.

Sales of the two-door muscle cars contracted 20 percent for 27,018 deliveries during Q1 2024, meaning Camaro sales significantly underperformed the segment average.

For reference, we provide sales results for the expanded mainstream two-door sports car segment below.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Camaro sales took a downturn to start the year. The Bow Tie brand’s discontinued muscle car moved the remaining inventory off dealer lots. As of late April, there may be about ten new Chevy Camaro ZL1 units left in the United States.

The last example has been built due to faltering Chevy Camaro sales and notable missteps, while GM commits to a somewhat aggressive strategy to go fully electric by 2035.

Meanwhile, production ended back in December for one of its chief rivals, the Dodge Challenger, which will be indirectly replaced by the first-ever 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona, for which GM has no rival and can’t build one.

However, the Ford Mustang continues on for 2024, now in its seventh generation.

About Chevrolet Camaro

The 2024 Chevy Camaro arrives as the sixth generation’s ninth and final model year, featuring a pair of special-edition variants. These include the 2024 Chevy Camaro ZL1 Garage 56 Edition, as well as the 2024 Chevy Camaro Collector Edition, both of which offer their own unique content and varying levels of exclusivity to pay homage to the first-gen Camaro’s internal program code of “Panther.” The Collector Edition was offered on all trim levels, but only the ZL1 could be ordered with Panther Black Matte paint, the first matte paint option ever offered on the Camaro.

Additionally, the 2024 Chevy Camaro ZL1 Collector Edition includes a Shinola Canfield Sport 45mm watch, which is now being shipped to owners.

A boatload of other changes and updates for the 2024 Camaro included dropping two paint colors, the Shock and Steel Edition package, the lowered suspension package and the sway bar package, the 20-inch Caliente wheels, the base 1LS trim level, and the turbo 2.0L LTG engine. Additionally, the 2024 Camaro SS 1LE Suspension Handling Package became unavailable, while the full SS 1LE Track Performance Package remained available to order.

The first-generation Camaro’s internal program code name was “Panther”

Final units of the Camaro Convertible were produced this past November 22nd, and the last Camaro Coupe was built on December 14th, bringing production of the muscle car’s sixth generation to an end without an ICE successor in the works. 2024 marks the end of the Bow Tie brand’s muscle car – at least for now.

GM built a total of 1,335 units of the 2024 Chevy Camaro Collector Edition.

“Camaro is a passion product,” a Chevy spokesperson said of the end of the Camaro, noting that “it has developed a fan base across the world and has brought people into Chevrolet dealerships for generations.” In summary, “the sixth generation specifically represented athleticism and composure – exuding confidence on the road and dominance on the track.”

Fans of the performance nameplate are finding that every Chevy Camaro Collector Edition has this cool Easter egg.

Recently, Hendrick Motorsports debuted a 40th Anniversary Edition of the Chevy Camaro, which will be sold exclusively through select Hendrick Automotive Group Chevrolet dealerships to add yet another special variant as the iconic muscle car sunsets.

Looking forward, GM has confirmed a next-generation Chevy Camaro to keep the nameplate alive, but we don’t know when we’ll see it. Global Chevrolet Vice President Scott Bell stated, “While we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro’s story.”

The Camaro name may not be applied to a single model but to a broader EV sub-brand. Some of the models would likely resemble the familiar Camaro with coupe and convertible variants, while others might be sporty two-door and four-door crossover SUVs, with a mid-priced sports car as the brand flagship.

  1. An EV Camaro is blasphemous.
A successor should be ICE or just let it RIP.

  2. No way. How could this be happening? A vehicle that’s out of production is losing sales wow. Call me shocked.

    1. Dennis, I couldn’t wait to say the same thing. They must really take us for STUPID to call this news. Oh, we stopped making a car months ago, and sales are down SMH.

    2. Over a year ago, Chevy announced the end of production, and sales in North America dropped. What were they expecting? After visiting the Chevy Pavillion at Disney’s Florida Epcot Park, I thought Chevy changed their mind.
On display was a futuristic designed Camaro. I’ve been driving a 2014 model Camaro and was seriously considering purchasing a Camaro as displayed. I still am if I can find a dealership that has one. Rest assured I am skeptical as our local dealer noted they returned, what models they had back to the manufacturer because of low sales. My insurance company has advised me my cost of coverage will go up, due to the difficulty of finding parts for the 2014 model. Is this going to be the same issue for 2024 models?

    1. I could absolutely see Mary Barra putting out a CUV EV “Camaro”. She is the Kathleen Kennedy of the auto industry. Kennedy puts self inserts into all of her projects, Mary might as well put more old lady CUVs into the market, there are only several dozen models in the segment already.

  9. Maybe if you made what customers wanted, and reduce the price. I went old school and I’m restoring my dream car, a 1980 Z28 Camaro. I’ve loved the Camaro since I can remember, my brother tells the story of one our Dad’s friends bought a 1979 Z28 and brought it to the house. He said I wouldn’t stop talking about it. Hopefully, this is like 2002, and in a few years the Camaro will come back out. GM needs to get rid of the EVs, the unions, and build a true All-American muscle car, bring the back the Camaro, the Trans Am (and not a converted Camaro), a real Chevelle, and the GTO.

  11. It’s a shame that GM and its management killed the ICE Camaro, a proven performance car w/o a suitable replacement. ‘23 Camaro sales were 31k worth approx $1.1B. Sounded like good business to me.

I’m sure Ford really appreciates the increase in Mustang sales this year.

I got the only 2022 2SS in riverside blue with the white Rally stripe coming to Canada I loaded it right up every available option and it took a year for me to get it,but I tell you it was worth the wait, the car is truly amazing, ya it has blind spots but show me a car that doesn’t as far as MB at the head of GM I guess the old saying goes “It’s not who you know it’s who you blow to get the job”and as far as the world going electric all I can say is GOOD LUCK AND MAY GOD HELP US ,all I can say is when the roads are full of snow here in the Great white north and the highway shuts down and your freezing in you electric vehicle “DONT KNOCK ON MY WINDOW SAYING YOUR COLD BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO HEAT AND YOUR BATTERY IS DEAD,

  14. I’m a retired guy who bought a 2022 ZL1 new, red hot, and after all that was said I feel blessed to be fortunate enough to own a muscle Camaro. I drive it respectfully and show it in car shows. Just did second oil change with no service issues. Somebody got it right in GM.

    1. I have a 2014 that is in storage from November until mid-April. It has never seen snow.

It’s such a pleasure to drive that I took it across the country multiple times without problems. Maintenance is done on schedule with a full mechanical inspection done by request. My neighbors tease me when I wash and polish it. Then again, it’s not just a car to me. I purchased it as a pre-retirement gift to myself and if I had a rough day, I’d take it for a ride, it relieved all the stress. Whoever thought it could be therapeutic?

    1. Submitted an order (in the dealership before the option was even available on their website) for a 2023 2SS that never came, dealership finally changed it to a 2024 after I called them out about the 2023 production ending and wondering where my car was. 2024 never came either, but a city an hour away took delivery of almost exactly what I had ordered, just sitting on their lot, so thankfully ended up with a 2024 2SS after waiting 1.5 years

      1. Glad you got your car eventually. GM does this a lot—claiming that people don’t want a vehicle while they are turning them away in droves at the same time. It’s part of their never ending quest to build what THEY want to build.
