Redesigned 2024 Ford Mustang Unveiled As Chevy Camaro Rival

GM’s crosstown rival, Ford Motor Company, just unveiled the all-new seventh-generation 2024 Ford Mustang at the 2022 North American International Auto Show, also known as the Detroit Auto Show. The new 2024 Ford Mustang will rival the Chevy Camaro from the GM camp.

The latest 2024 Ford Mustang announces its arrival with fresh exterior styling, hitting the pavement with a low, long stance. The restyled frontend features new headlights that are pulled back into the fenders, incorporating Tri-Bar LED lighting elements, while the GT and EcoBoost models will stand apart thanks to unique fascia elements, including a larger, more aggressive front intake for the GT.

The 2024 Ford Mustang will once again be offered as either a hardtop coupe or soft-top convertible. Customers will have 11 exterior colors to choose from, while wheel sizing is set at 17 inches as standard, up to 19-inches for the GT with the option for 20-inchers. Further vehicle customization is available via the Mustang Design Series.

Inside, the 2024 Ford Mustang’s redesigned cabin features a digital cockpit layout that was inspired by fighter jets, and includes two customizable digital displays mounted high on the dash. Ford also integrated some of the hard buttons into the display for a cleaner look. Cloth upholstery is standard, while synthetic leather upholstery is on the options list.

Under the hood, the new Mustang can be had with one of two engines, including the turbocharged 2.3L four-cylinder EcoBoost, as well as the naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 Coyote, the latter of which will “deliver the most naturally aspirated horsepower of any Mustang GT.” Exact output figures are still forthcoming. Both a six-speed manual and 10-speed automatic are on hand for cog swaps.

The next-generation 2024 Ford Mustang will go on sale in the U.S. next summer. Assembly takes place at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly plant in Michigan.

    1. Yes. I’m seeing current Camaro styling points on this one.

      1. wow… maybe thats why I LOVE the way this new Mustang looks. Because it has Camaro styling cues. As a 6th gen Camaro owner, I AM LOVING THIS NEW S650 MUSTANG. SHEEEEEEEEEESSSSHHHHHHH, that car is beautiful.

    2. To me, it doesn’t look like a Ford & that’s a good thing. Looks more sporty than the EV Charger Daytona concept, but they both have more angular, squared off lines with inverted headlights.
Will there even be a new ICE Camaro or will GM let Corvette do the job? A Camaro reskin would be so easy but GM doesn’t always do the logical thing

      1. I think it still clearly looks like a Mustang without a doubt. If I saw that driving down the street, I would recognize that as a Mustang immediately. The sharp/boxy body lines, the rear quarter shape and the hood all have features that I liked about the 6th gen Camaro. If I could only have one car, I will probably always choose Camaro over Mustang because of nostalgia and personal preferences. But if finances allow me to have both or if the 7th gen Camaro gets cancelled, I would happily be a 7th gen Mustang owner.

Although I’ve heard rumors that the 7th gen Camaro is just delayed, not cancelled. I could be wrong but I have a feeling that the 7th gen Camaro will be based off the CT4 chassis and come out around 2026. The S650 Mustang is just beautiful, I hope this motivates GM to make a good 7th gen Camaro.

Think about this, the 6th gen Mustang came out in 2013 as a 2014 model and the 7th gen Mustang comes out in 2023 as a 2024 model. The 6th gen Camaro came out in 2015 as a 2016 model, I wouldn’t be surprised if the 7th gen Camaro comes out in 2025 as a 2026 model. Jim Farley said in an article that the Mustang Mach E made the 7th gen Mustang possible, now GM released a Blazer EV to compete with the Mustang Mach E. But then again I’m just speculating, take this with a grain of salt.

    3. But without the absolutely tiny side windows and a updated interior. Looks good.

I feel like the rear is missing something. Maybe a black applique would do it, I don’t know.

Come on GM make a 7th gen Camaro.

  6. Looks like the current gen, they didn’t change it enough.
Slightly different fenders bumpers head and taillights, bronco steering wheel. Same mid council, is it the same chassis 😃

    Reply
    1. I disagree. They changed too much. Just seems like change for the sake or change. They’d have been better off just giving it a second minor facelift.

      Reply
      1. Maybe so, but there is no doubt there is a lot of carry over parts. A non enthusiast would think it’s just a refresh on the same chassis and the same generation. Ford made what might be the very last muscle car ever build feel like a phone in. At least GM did something special for there iconic sports car the vette and everything was new and no carry overs

        Reply
        1. Alright. I actually don’t disagree with you. Yes, they should have either done a full ground up redesign or treated it like the Charger and made some minor changes to the lights, etc. This half measure doesn’t seem worth it.

          Reply
    2. The flip side is GM is changing nothing and discontinuing it and Dodge has been the same for a decade and is eventually some day going ev.

  8. I love it! Thank you Ford! Improved the looks over the current generation, especially the rear-end. Solid V8 music. That gray GT looks incredible! This looks to be my next daily driver, if dealers don’t price them over MSRP.

    Again, THANK YOU FORD!!!

  9. A bit of a styling downgrade in my opinion. A lot of odd lines awkwardly placed over the existing body. On par with the 2019 Camaro Restyling.

I’m sure the interior materials will be fine, but the whole area directly under the screen (HVAC vents and controls) is a mess.

  10. The Mustang still has better driver visibility than any of the Camaro’s since Chevy brought it back in 2010 or 09. I had a 2011 SS and hated the poor side rear visibility. Chevy just refused to redesign the cockpit to equal the Mustang. No wonder sales have trended downwards and now the a Camaro is being killed again.

  13. At least Ford gives a new Mustang, whereas GM gives up on the Camaro and decides to redesign the Trax instead despite having a new Trailblazer sitting in the same segment.

  14. Seems like they went to a lot of trouble when they could have just added two new colors, dropped some content, added some new stripe packages, and let it die after the 2024 model for the second time. Sad again ev gm and a big mistake going forward!

    1. They could have, like GM, but it is encouraging that they didn’t.

  15. It’s a nice iterative upgrade, especially in the interior, but it’s not an overhaul. Given the hype before the big reveal, I expected something wilder (like a Mustang EV sedan). But perhaps that’s because EVs tends to get all of the attention now. It’s actually nice to see an ICE vehicle can still get some attention.

    1. I agree, took me some time looking at better pictures and came away not liking the screen design. Just a big flat rectangle with no design sense. Initially I was wowed, but now not so much. I find some of GM’s designs with more curvature or integration far superior.

    2. i would have preferred to see a more traditional dash just updated with better materials. The over-sized screen looks odd, And seems like a fair amount of plastic – hard to teel in the pics.

  20. I’ll be keeping my ’17 Mustang for a long time. Are the blind spots as bad in this as the real Camaro?

  21. I love that rear end, but I’d still definitely take a brand new ZL1 carbon fiber Camaro.

  22. That whole presentation was a mess in my opinion. They seemed really excited about features the mainstream public could care less about (electronic drift button and remote rev) and the audience didn’t seem to be very engaged at all.

  23. I may need to stop commenting on this site. Too much bias. Ford will sell every one of their Mustangs. This also doesn’t look like a Camaro. When sales of this take off, I want you to ask yourself if this looks so much like a Camaro, then how come no one wants a Camaro???

Mind you, I’m a GM fan saying this. Great job Ford (inside and out).

  24. Well at least Ford gave a commitment to the ICE, where as GM has no new plans for the Camaro. Oh wait, a EV Camaro SUV is on the horizon.

  25. So the 2024 Mustang is taking on the Camaro…huh. The Camaro production is slated to end in 2023. Maybe the author knows something that GM doesn’t.

  26. Man, I wish GM would get rid of old Mary and update the Camaro. Also, while their at it. Give us true performance Suv’s and Trucks. The underwhelming ZR2 and AT4X are a nice start but blowers need to be added or a nice 40-50 HP bump to the N/A V8’s!

  27. Take note GM: your rival is putting effort behind their ICE pony car.

  28. All I see is a Camaro with Mustang bumpers? I guess Ford really is trying to compete with the Camaro, all the way to the point they look the same, lol.

  29. Mustmaro or Camstang?

This looks more like mid-cycle restyle than an all new car, the center section seems the same as the current Mustang as do a lot of the non IP interior parts.

    Reply
  30. Well you gotta give it to ford for at least keeping the muscle car segment on life support. Since Gm is letting the Camaro die a slow death, and dodge bringing the EVs next year, Ford took a diff approach. I will say I wish Gm would do this on the Camaro, a nice nip and tick slight interior redesign and drop a LT-2 and let it ride for another 5 years. But I forgot Gm thinks EVs are going to save it’s problems, when we don’t even have a proper power grid to support the EVs we have now lol.

    Reply
  31. Doesn’t look too bad other than the ugly rims and the interior doesn’t excite me. At least Ford is keeping their pony car and giving consumer’s choices unlike GM that is giving up yet again and losing both an affordable sport coupe and their last standard transmission!

    Reply
  32. Everyone’s missing the point of this newest edition Mustang….IT’S HERE FOR YOUR BUYING PLEASURE IF SO DESIRED WHILE WE WON’T SEE A NEW CAMARO COMING OUR WAY TO COMPETE WITH IT! Give Ford some credit here for having the guts to maintain these Pony Cars since Day One while the Chevy gang has not been given enough talent and money to continue the Camaro in Ernst. Year after year Chevy produces what could be an amazing Pony Car, but instead we get a half assed car that at one time just a few short years ago had the ugliest front end ever seen on a Camaro…so hideous they had to stop production and make a new and improved front end design, remember that, I sure do! I get it, it’s hard to let the once very popular Camaro just die from not continuing to improve it, year to year…instead what few new Camaro’s we do see on the street are hard to tell apart if you can actually see one the street (can you tell one year from another, it’s not that easy) and take it from MOPAR or FORD, you have to make visible and physical improvements both inside and out every year or your going to fall behind the competition…just as the current Camaro lineup has fallen behind.
Think this is just so much hype…go to any Cars and Coffee event, see if you can find a modern Camaro club showing up with more than just one or two cars, here in SoCal the Dodge Boys and Mustang Gangs are thick with stock and modified cars, newer and old models, and they are proud to “line ’em up” and show off their cars.
I personally love the Camaro, even while working for GM in 1986 I had a hand in building a few prototype RS Camaro’s at the GM Van Nuys Los Angels Assembly Plant and it was an amazing success, it kept our assembly lines running two shifts for years! But, that was then, and this is now…and I know when “the end is near” for a once proud Chevy “F” Car variant, when you start to cancel options, when you start to transfer once proud engineers and designers and assign them another platform to work on within the corporation, it’s time to lay out a “going away for good” plan, and I believe that we’re now seeing that happening with the Chevy Camaro.
I may be wrong here but my gut feeling says “better get one now if you are really into a new Camaro”, as GM starts to cancel super car options like the ZL-1 and 1LE Camaro’s in various engine drivetrains, certain color and trim options, wheel and tire options, you can bet your seeing the Camaro’s production figures going down as popularity wanes for this once proud Pony Car. It’ll be a sad day indeed when production finally comes to an end, not just for the fine folks that build this car line, but for future generations who’ll not have the pleasure of owning and driving this once, amazingly popular car, new and built in the USA. Just my opinion, but it comes from many years working General Motors, and believe me GM is a “creature of habit”, once they establish a certain way of doing things and you look for the signs of things to come, both good and bad, you’ll see that it’s easy to read GM’s future plans…in this case it’s going to be almost a full EV platform for most of it’s product lines, and this, in my opinion is a major mistake that’ll prove a real problem for GM cause not everyone is sold on EV’s…I’m certainly not and I believe I’m not alone with this feeling. Time will tell I guess.

  34. I don’t care what it looks like…. when I see a BMW M4 or M3 series out run the 5.0 2021 Coyote with a much nicer exhaust note, Ford better put more than lipstick on its face.

    Reply
    1. But to be fair a Mustang GT is $30k-$40k, an M3 or M4 is $70k. That’s almost double the cost. An M3 M4 is closer to the price of a Mustang GT500 or Camaro ZL1….. compare those.

  35. I hate to say this as a GM Person but congratulations Ford – nice evolution! GM needs to wake up or a lot of fans will not respect them in their new electric existence. GM can evolve the Camaro spending on some new sheet metal perhaps progressing to the 70 -1/2 design. Use that car as a model to replace the ugly dashboard perhaps having something similar in the opening to the NASCAR ZL dash. The current mechanicals can stay – less investment… look at what Ford did! Yes – electric is coming but we need to stop saddling this on tax credits on the back of the American taxpayer and get something competitive in price and performance with a comparable range. A great future Camaro might be the dimensions of the current model meeting the above criteria… GM there is a true challenge for your designers and let the bean counters be pleased with the result rather than stifling technical development and client desires.

I have 4 years left on my finance for my 6th gen Camaro. In 4 years if there is no 7th gen Camaro, I might just have to get a S650 Mustang.

    1. Mustangs definitely have better road visibility. But if you like the 6th gen Camaro, I wouldn’t let the visibility be your deciding factor. Once you daily drive a Camaro you get used to it. I sometimes forget what “normal” visibility is like, until I drive another car.

  48. Odd title for this article. First off, I have driven both cars, Mustangs and Camaros, at lots of media events. And I’m an owner of a 65 Mustang ragtip and a new Mach-E.

The GM chassis are so much better it’s not even close. But in terms of sales the Camaro is close to an after thought. The ’24 Mustang is going to blow away whatever is left of Camaro production before GM finally throws in the towel…. Again.

This is sad. Camaro is marketing gold and GM is screwing the pooch.

    Again.

And the newest Mustang is just more Ford salt in GM wounds.

    1. Yea it’s sad to see how many buyers went for Mustangs over Camaros. Most casual fans have no idea about the 6th gen Camaros chassis and handling. They see horsepower numbers and base everything off that. The 5th gen Camaro was a huge success because they marketed it with Bumblebee and Transformers. When the 6th gen Camaro came out with the new Alpha Chassis, it was a day and night improvement over the 5th gen. But because of bad or lack of marketing NOBODY knew how good the 6th gen was, they just thought it was a face lifted 5th gen. The 5th gen Camaro was based off a Holden Commodore chassis, the 6th gen was based off the Cadillac ATS/CTS chassis, even though they are completely different cars most people thought of them as the same thing.

If I had to get a car for the track, it’d been a Camaro (though the GT350R is intoxicating). If I had to get a car to live with, Mustang all day every day.

    1. Mustang and Camaro are both great cars. They both have their pros and their cons. If I had either one I’d be happy, but if I could only have 1 I’d still pick Camaro.

Yes I agree the 6th gen Mustang’s interior and cabin space was better than the 6th gen Camaro.

      Reply
  50. Ha! The mustang is already a failure, now it is more of a failure! Camaro is not going out of production. They are just temporarily halting production, due to making a EV Camaro. There is a 7th gen Camaro coming, as it will be an EV version of the Camaro. With all of the news articles saying they’re going to stop production of the Camaro permanently is false. They are just temporarily halting production of the Camaro, and making an EV version, and Camaro is the best, sooooooooo
