Sales of the all-new Chevy Trax, shown here, continued to lead the way for Chevrolet Sales in the U.S. during Q1 2024.

The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet sales were slightly down year-over-year during Q1 2024, with about half the models in the red.

Regardless of the reporting period, the all-new Chevy Trax again showed exceptional gains, and the biggest, among the Bow Tie brand’s 17 model lines, while the Chevy LCF trucks posted the next-best growth numbers.

Though Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV production is officially over, GM CEO Mary Barra confirmed that the next-gen Chevy Bolt EV is on the way. It’s scheduled to arrive in 2025 and for the 2026 model year. It won’t be a clean-sheet redesign but rather based on the current Bolt EUV.

The EV family was joined by two new entries, the Chevy Blazer EV midsize crossover and the Chevy Silverado EV full-size light-duty pickup truck, both of which went on sale late last year.

Additionally, final units of the Camaro Convertible were produced this past November 22nd, and the last Camaro Coupe was built on December 14th, bringing production of the muscle car’s sixth generation to an end without an ICE successor in the works.

Looking forward, GM has confirmed a next-generation Chevy Camaro to keep the nameplate alive. Most recently, GM President Mark Reuss expressed a desire for the Chevy Camaro to return as an EV pony car, and Global Chevy Chief Scott Bell said, “The Camaro is something that’s a part of us. … I would just never say never. I never want to lose the energy of that brand,” while also hinting at an all-electric future for the Bow Tie brand’s muscle car.

The Camaro name may not be applied to a single model but to a broader EV sub-brand. Some of the models would likely resemble the familiar Camaro with coupe and convertible variants, while others might be sporty two-door and four-door crossover SUVs, with a mid-priced sports car as the brand flagship.

Utility sales, comprised of unibody crossovers and body-on-frame SUVs, did not fare well to start out the year, with only the Trax and the Chevy Equinox posting positive numbers.

In terms of volume, the Equinox remains the Bow Tie brand and GM’s best-selling utility, while the Chevy Traverse had the worst showing this quarter, followed by the Chevy Suburban, the Chevy Tahoe, and the Chevy Trailblazer.

An all-new Equinox and next-generation Traverse are on the way, joined by refreshed Tahoe and Suburban models. Nothing new has been announced for the Trailblazer.

The Chevy Corvette showed gains, but the Chevy Malibu, the sole sedan offered here, did not.

Joining the Corvette lineup is the first-ever 2024 Chevy Corvette E-Ray, featuring the naturally aspirated engine from the Stingray mated to an electric motor mounted up front. The E-Ray is also the first-ever production Corvette equipped with front-wheel drive and all-wheel-drive traction, making it the quickest Vette ever, with a 0-to-60 mph time of just 2.5 seconds. That’s a tenth of a second quicker than the Z06.

Chevy’s trucks showed moderate gains, with the Chevy Silverado lineup continuing to be the volume Chevrolet sales leader and for GM overall. The Chevy Colorado sales posted bigger gains than its bigger sibling this quarter.

Not surprisingly, sales of the dated Chevy Express fell the opposite amount. Along with the GMC Savana, the full-size van is an old vehicle that traces its roots to the 1990s, being the oldest GM model currently in production. While a much-needed overhaul is overdue, The General may have canceled any such plans, even though the automaker previously entertained plans to redesign the Chevy Express for the 2027 model year, keeping the ICE powertrain.

On a positive note, GM has sold more than 3 million Chevy Express and GMC Savana units to date.

About The Numbers

  • All percent change figures compared to U.S. Chevrolet sales for Q1 2023, unless noted otherwise
  • There were 76 selling days for Q1 2024 and 75 selling days for Q1 2023

  1. Well, could have been worse. The EV publications are pushing the news that GM’s EVs are selling well, the Bolt, Blazer, and Silverado EVs are at least doing their part. Colorado sales settling to good increases.

    1. I guess that could depend on location. Where I’m at, Blazer EVs are sitting 90+ days. Hummer EVs are discounted and still at dealers. Dealers are turning down Blazer EV units at this point, and this is not a small market – 5MM+ people within the metro area.

      1. Same here. I’ve only seen them on the lots at the Chevy dealers but not in the wild. And where I live here in Bergen County NJ its Tesla stomping grounds. Except here those with Teslas tend to be upper middle class who traded in a BMW or a Mercedes and the Teslas sit next to their other BMW and Mercedes typically an X7 or GLS (CERTAINLY NOT buying them because they want to save money on gas or save the environment). Your middle class and lower working class New Jerseyan isn’t looking at one of these. Not with the taxes we pay and high cost of living and high cost to insure cars as it is. Something clueless Phil Murphy and his ICE ban doesn’t seem to get or he does get but doesn’t care anyways since he has his mansion in Rumson with his environmentally friendly V12 Rolls-Royce.

As for dealers turning them down, we have a good chunk of those Buick dealers that took the buyout when asked to convert to selling EVs. Even in a state with an EV mandate (ICE ban deadline) dealers are simply not convinced customers will switch so easily.

  2. The Bolt comments are incorrect. The Q1 2024 volume shown is for the Bolt EV and Bolt EV family and the 2023 equivalent is for just the Bolt EV. Bolt sales are down due to the sad discontinuation of the fabulous Bolt – pending the even better 2026 model year Bolt.

  3. Slow new day, eh? Nothing like discussing Q1 sales data MONTHS after it was released… Can’t wait for another article about a color discontinuation due to name change on the 2024 Camaro thats already out of production…

  4. I am utterly amazed that the poor Malibu is still pulling so strong. Zero advertising by GM. Never promoted. No real good deals on them like you can get on the Silverado or Equinox. Dealers stock few in any of them. GM/Chevy really treat the Malibu like a red-headed stepchild. So sad.

And yet, in 2023 it was Chevy’s 3rd best selling vehicle after the Silverado and Equinox. So far for 2024, it’s 4th behind of course the Silverado, Nox and now Trax. I would love to see what would happen if they decided to advertise the Malibu half as much as those other three. It would probably pass the Trax again and maybe even the Nox.

  5. Well I don’t think it has anything to do with building one car or another what I think it has to 9do with is our economy isn’t that good right now even though the news media says oh the economy is doing great no it really isn’t people can’t afford as much as they used to in 2018 or even 2022.. You can believe that if you want to but and it has nothing to do with who is who our president is okay so I don’t want to hear nothing about Biden or Trump I’m not talking about that I’m talking about our economy in general and all the politicians not just the president. Yes GM should build another Malibu or another Impala The Impala was beautiful I don’t know why they discontinued it I ssw on the other day It’s it was really a beautiful looking sedan but they killed it for what reason I don’t know what to build Hummer’s so build the Hummer in another plant whatever it is what it is God bless all 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

  6. Trax is affordable and looks great. People still want and need a vehicle in this price range. I do wonder about the life of the Turbo 3, however even compared to the Turbo 4. Sales of the large SUV’s, Suburban, Tahoe and even Traverse down. Profits from $60K to $90K SUV’s and pickups are gm’s survival and many people are out of the market for these in this inflated economy. Many just had to have them at MSRP or even higher and are not only out of the market, but seriously upside down on them. Lots around here are covered up with Ram, gm, & Ford pickups along with EV’s no one wants. Bubble is about to pop.

  7. GM has lost its way. Wasting so.much money on EVs. Toyota out smarted them hands down. Pickups look nice but who can afford them. Only one engine for the Colorado they should have at least offered the V6 with just a mild hybrid. They could of offered a AWD in a Sedan and kept it half way affordable but they were to cheap todo it hence the Malibu

    1. Tom while a new sedan from GM would be great, why didn’t people buy them when GM built a sedan for every division? I’m I’m talking Pontiac, Chevy, Buick, Oldsmobile, Cadillac some brands had two or three sedans to choose from…then all of a sudden people stopped buying a lot of sedans. It’s also corporate greed because GM like every other corporation wants to make money and they feel that a Chevy or Buick sedan won’t make them money
