General Motors President Mark Reuss has expressed a desire for the Chevy Camaro to return as an all-electric pony car. This potential revival aims to maintain the Camaro’s iconic status while making it accessible and appealing to a broader audience. Production of the sixth-generation, ICE-based Camaro ended last year, leaving enthusiasts uncertain about the nameplate’s future.
According to a report from MotorTrend, Reuss envisions the potential Camaro EV as a sporty, yet relatively affordable vehicle, with pricing aimed at roughly the same target as the Chevy Equinox EV (starting at $34,995). Throwing in a federal tax credit of $7,500, that price point could be as low as $27,495, making the Camaro EV competitive and attractive to a wide range of buyers.
As for the powertrain specs, the new Chevy Camaro EV would almost certainly adopt GM’s Ultium battery technology and Ultium Drive motor technology, the same components used across GM’s latest EV models.
While the exact form of the next-gen Camaro is still under debate, a traditional two-door coupe seems unlikely. Rather, a four-door design with coupe-like aesthetics would be the more plausible way forward. While traditionalists would obviously prefer a two-door, the two-door body style is simply losing ground in terms of market share. The four-door layout could also address the poor visibility issues that have plagued previous Camaro models.
The destiny of the Chevy Camaro has been a topic of debate ever since it became clear that the sixth-generation was headed for the door. Initial speculation pointed to the nameplate’s reuse as an EV-centric sub-brand offering several different all-electric models, including SUVs. Four-door sedans have been speculated as well. Either way, GM has confirmed that a new generation is indeed going to happen.
For now at least, GM is more focused on scaling up its all-electric ambitions, while finding the right balance with market conditions and demand, including the reintroduction of plug-in hybrids to the North American market. Nevertheless, for fans, it likely comes as a relief to learn that the GM President is considering where the Camaro could land in the future.
