The GM Authority Take
U.S. Buick sales showed healthy gains overall during Q1 2024 year-over-year, with a couple of winners and a couple of losers. The premium marque only offers crossovers and just four models at that.
The refreshed subcompact Buick Encore GX was the only model in the green this quarter. However, the first-ever subcompact Buick Envista has no comparison data but was essentially in the green as well, moving more than three times the units that the Buick Encore did a year ago.
The refreshed 2024 Buick Encore GX debuted over a year ago, incorporating fresh styling cues and significant updates inside. Perhaps the model update is paying off with increased sales.
Shortly after that, GM revealed the first-ever 2024 Buick Envista as the Tri-Shield brand’s all-new entry-level crossover, indirectly replacing the discontinued Encore. Even at launch, the new nameplate has been a popular choice among buyers, providing an attractive product that far outshines the dated model it replaces.
On another note, sales of the compact Buick Envision were in the red this time around.
However, this past Spring, GM officially unveiled the refreshed 2024 Buick Envision, which is set to launch this summer, featuring an updated exterior and a new interior, as well as a 30-inch diagonal infotainment screen and more standard safety features. The update may help turn things around for Buick’s middling offering.
The three-row Buick Enclave was also in the red for the quarter, posting a similar decline while moving the fewest units among the Tri-Shield brand’s models.
Recently, however, The General debuted the all-new 2025 Buick Enclave. The third generation of the premium three-row, full-size crossover also boasts larger dimensions, an overhauled cabin, and a 30-inch ultra-wide infotainment screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, along with a plethora of safety tech.
The 2025 Enclave again offers three trim levels but with notable changes to the lineup. Joining the carry-over range-topping Avenir variant is a new base model Preferred trim and the nameplate’s first-ever Sport Touring (ST) trim, replacing what was previously offered as a package on the dropped Essence and Premium trims.
Only time will tell if the next-gen Enclave will turn sales around for Buick’s flagship offering.
The Encore GX and Envision moved about the same number of units at over 13K each.
The Envista followed at nearly 10K units, while the Enclave had around 8K deliveries.
Interestingly enough, with these model updates, Buick now offers the same three trim levels across its lineup, namely Preferred, Sport Touring (ST), and Avenir. This is the result of GM bringing its new Y trim strategy to Buick.
This provides consistency and simplicity for buyers. For each of the Tri-Shield brand’s models, buyers can choose a base model, go with sporty, or select luxury, while every trim offers a premium option in the marketplace with similar styling, regardless.
As Buick puts it, each of its models is “Exceptional by design.”

Many shoppers are looking for affordable Buicks and the Envista and Encore GX are the only two Buicks that tick that box.
And by the way, stop this continual bad-mouthing of the original Encore: it was a well-engineered design that sold like hotcakes since its’ introduction and remains in high demand and commands hefty prices in the pre-owned market to this very day.
I read that the average price of a new car nowadays is about $48,000. That’s about what a Buick Envision costs, so it’s not extravagant, it’s priced affordably, too. It’s a nice car for the money.
My parents just traded in their Honda Civic for an Encore GX. Dad was a little hesitant because of the small 3 cylinder engine. However, it has decent acceleration and good gas mileage. They are both very happy with it. Buick is putting out some nice vehicles now.
Not counting the discontinued Encore, 2 of the 4 Buick models had decreases in sales. 44,385 units moved in a quarter & majority Encore GX, Envista & Chinese imported Envision. If not for the Chinese love for the brand, it would go the way of Pontiac & Olds, sad. Little to see here in the US. Very little to choose from of this once great division.
The drop in sales may have been because there are new Envisions and Enclaves on the way, or that GM has been playing games with the starts of production and release dates, Oddly, the Envision right now on the Buick website is still the 2023 (what?), the 2024 Envision is not yet on sale (coming “this summer”), and the 2025 Enclave has now been delayed a few months beyond that.
No–Buick vehicles are structurally Chevrolet clones and GM turns a profit. Buick Envista and Encore GX increase S Korean factory utilization. Currently, there is no better way to allocate capital unless GM wants to build a brand.
Because Buick shares GMC showrooms, it can’t sell bigger than Encore, stunting it’s growth. Nonetheless, the brand is profitable. Envista indicates that GM may be trying to make Buick unique but I won’t hold my breath.
Chevy is too damaged for Europe but Buick EVs partially sourced from China could sell well. America is biased against the brand but it’s a clean slate VW and Peugeot rival for European sale
Take the total Buick sales for 1st Q 2024, less the Envision sales, and it’s nearly the same as the Malibu sales in that same period.
Yup, SUV’s are the only thing selling any more, right? Wrong. And if GM actually gave a s**t about the Malibu and advertised it, the sales would surpass the entire Buick sales. And to think how Buick used to sell that many cars a month back in the 1980’s.
