Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Equinox sales during the fourth quarter of 2023 placed GM’s best-selling crossover in fourth place among 16 entries in the mainstream compact crossover segment when ranked by sales volume. The Toyota RAV4 took back the top spot by a wide margin over the Honda CR-V, which had unseated the Toyota for the first time in two years last quarter. RAV4 sales swelled 37 percent for a whopping 132,112 deliveries, besting Honda by over 33K deliveries. The CR-V fell back to second with a 67 percent jump to 99,106 units. The Nissan Rogue kept third with a seven percent bump to 60,367 units. The Chevy Equinox (see running Chevy Equinox sales) move up to fourth with a 20 percent increase to 58,559 units, trading places with the Hyundai Tucson, which took fifth with a 14 percent spurt to 56,444 units. The GMC Terrain (see running GMC Terrain sales), the Equinox’s corporate cousin and D2 platform mate, slipped a spot to 12th place with an 18 percent drop to 17,229 units.

Overall, the compact crossover segment grew 25 percent to 643,046 units, meaning Chevy Equinox sales slightly underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Even though Chevy Equinox sales increased during the fourth quarter, the performance slightly lagged that of the segment. It’s worth noting that this was also the case the preceding quarter.

However, combining sales of the Equinox and GMC Terrain gave GM again a third-place showing against perennial favorites. Incidentally, the Toyota RAV4 reclaimed pole position over the Honda CR-V by over a whopping 33K deliveries after Honda pulled ahead last quarter for the first time in two years.

As GM’s best-selling crossover, the Equinox saw sales exceed expectations this past November thanks to strong inventory in November, which was at 52 days supply even though a 60 days supply is considered optimal across the automotive industry. But inventory was down in December, coming in at 40 days supply and going against expectations.

About Chevrolet Equinox

The 2024 Chevy Equinox arrives with only a handful of changes and updates prior to the debut of an all-new fourth generation.

As in prior model years, front-wheel drive is included as standard across all 2024 Chevy Equinox trim levels, with all-wheel drive offered as an optional upgrade. Motivation for the 2024 Equinox comes from the new-for-2023 turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine, which produces 175 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque.

Here is everything that’s new and different for the 2024 Chevy Equinox.

This past August, the Chevy Equinox was praised for ease of child seat installation and noted for having top-quality seats.

Next-generation 2025 Chevy Equinox in Activ trim

A next-generation Chevy Equinox is on the way for the 2024 calendar year as the 2025 Chevy Equinox, which should give GM a good shot at the top of the mainstream compact crossover segment. Our spies first spotted the 2025 Equinox prototype testing back in November 2022, again the following December, and, most recently, last March. Also, GM Authority was the first to report that the next-gen Equinox will also get an Activ trim level like the one offered on the current generation Chevy Trailblazer and all-new 2024 Chevy Trax.

In June, images of the next-gen Equinox leaked in China, revealing a more rugged exterior design compared to the current model, while offering our first glimpse of the Activ trim. And back in October, GM accidentally leaked the 2025 Equinox in a new video ad for Chevy, but quickly replaced the model with a segment showing the 2024 Trax.

See what we know and expect regarding the 2025 Chevy Equinox. Based on information from our sources, production of the 2025 Equinox is currently scheduled to commence on May 20th.

2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV RS

Meanwhile, the 2024 Chevy Equinox EV will launch in the near future, with GM already building some early Equinox EV units. The Equinox EV will feature as standard a single Ultium Drive electric motor powering the front wheels, rated at 210 horsepower and 242 pound-feet of torque. An optional ‘eAWD’ system will also be offered, rated at 290 horsepower and 346 pound-feet of torque. February a year ago the 2024 Equinox EV began road testing.

Since mass-market EV ownership is typically costlier than that of ICE vehicles, the Chevy Equinox EV could change that. The Bow Tie brand’s upcoming all-electric crossover was introduced with an approximate $30,000 starting MSRP for the entry-level 1LT trim. In comparison, the ICE Chevy Equinox’s price ranges from $28K to $35K. Both the all-new EV model as well as the next-gen, 2025 Equinox internal combustion model will be sold side-by-side for the time foreseeable future, especially as the ICE version gets a makeover.

Production of the 2024 Equinox EV is currently scheduled to commence during the first quarter of 2024.

  1. GM took the correct direction by offering both electric (EV) and gas engine (ICEV) versions at the same time. This is what Ford has done with its three top selling models: F-150, Mustang, and Transit. And this direction will allow GM to take over and keep the Equinox as the best seling small SUV in America.

    1. It will split sales out of the EV, as it should.

  2. Due to a slew of problems and horrible ’24 pricing, I expect the Equinox to fly past the Rogue this year. IF GM makes enough of them to attract value-minde shoppers before the non-discounted new one takes over. Value appears to be the name of the game (finally) for 2024.

  3. Man, that 1.5 motor a handful of uninformed people complain about is really driving down sales. Seems everyone wants the 2.0 and aren’t buying the 1.5…
