The GM Authority Take

The notable decrease in Chevrolet Argentina sales during December 2023 further deepens the Bow Tie brand’s negative performance in the South American country, which is facing a severe economic crisis marked by high inflation rates along with various difficulties in terms of manufacturing and importing vehicles. The results represent Chevrolet’s second consecutive decline in the Argentine market and one of the lowest monthly figures of the entire 2023 calendar year.

Most of the models offered by Chevy in Argentina suffered drastic double- and triple-digit drops in sales volume in December. Like in prior months, the most significant drop was experienced by the Chevy Cruze, which sold almost 500 units less year-over-year. That resulted in the model slipping from first place among best-selling Chevy models to third in the domestic market during the month. In addition, notable drops posted by the Chevy Onix and S10 – the other two models that shared the best-selling podium with the Cruze in December 2022 – were also in the red.

As was the case during November, the Chevy Tracker and Chevy Spin were the only Chevrolet Argentina nameplates that were in the green last month. The subcompact crossover experienced a growth of nearly 70 percent, allowing it to add 216 units to the bottom line, consolidating itself as the brand’s best-selling model in December and during the entire calendar year in Argentina. Meanwhile, the Spin registered a three-digit increase, but its overall volume was only 16 units. As such, neither the Tracker nor the Spin sold in big enough quantities to make a substantial difference within the bottom line.
