GM just pulled the sheets on the all-new 2024 Chevy Trax, unveiling a fresh generation for The General’s entry-level crossover.
Outside, the 2024 Chevy Trax incorporates Chevrolet’s latest ICE-based design language, taking after the Chevy Blazer crossover. The latest Trax also boasts new exterior dimensions that are longer, lower, and wider than the preceding model.
Up front is a set of LED headlamps, while the five trim levels on offer (LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ) each include their own unique styling bits, from wheels to grille treatments. Wheel sizing ranges between 17, 18, and 19 inches in diameter.
Inside, the 2024 Chevy Trax is roomier than the preceding model, measuring in with an extra 3 inches of rear legroom and a 12-percent increase in cargo capacity. The new Trax also offers more safety features and tech, including six advanced safety and driver awareness technologies via Chevy Safety Assist, and a standard 8-inch diagonal infotainment screen. LT, 2RS, and Activ trims get an 11-inch screen. Further onboard tech includes Active Noise Cancelation and cruise control, while Adaptive Cruise Control is offered on most trims.
As for the power spec, the 2024 Chevy Trax is motivated by the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine, the same powerplant found in the Chevy Trailblazer LS and LT trim levels. Output is rated at 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. The 2024 Chevy Trax pairs the 1.2L I3 LIH engine to the GM six-speed automatic transmission, feeding the front wheels exclusively. All-wheel drive is not offered. Under the skin, the 2024 Chevy Trax rides on the GM VSS-F vehicle set.
Pricing for the 2024 Chevy Trax starts at $21,495, destination freight charge included. Notably, the 2024 Chevy Trax costs less than a 2022 Chevy Trax.
Trim Level | 2024 Trax | 2022 Trax FWD | 2023 Trailblazer FWD |
---|---|---|---|
LS | $21,495 | $22,895 | $23,295 |
1RS | $23,195 | - | - |
LT | $23,395 | $24,695 | $25,495 |
RS | - | - | $27,395 |
2RS | $24,995 | - | - |
Activ | $24,995 | - | $27,395 |
Also notable is just how similar the 2024 Chevy Trax is to the 2023 Chevy Seeker recently introduced in China, confirming previous GM Authority reports that the new Chevy Seeker is coming to North America after all.
The 2024 Chevy Trax is set to go on sale in the spring of the 2023 calendar year.

So we get the Seeker as the Trax. Now the Trax no longer offers AWD. This was GM’s opportunity to go after the Subaru Crosstrek, and they blew it. This will become a rental car/fleet darling. What a disappointment for retail customers in snowbelt states that just want a reasonably priced, AWD daily driver.
Look at this as a spiritual successor to the Cruze, which has been needed in the lineup. Yes, it’s an SUV and not a sedan, but it gives a solid vehicle at a price that’s closer to the price of a Cruze.
Yep, it could have been named Cruze Cross for all intents and purposes. No AWD is indeed a bummer but that was expected because I don’t think I ever saw a Seeker AWD for Asian markets. GM is keeping the price low, which is a good thing.
is it more compelling than say a Hybrid Maverick getting 42 MPG with a larger storage space for less money? Those at least do come with AWD options and if you are not into CVT’s and gutless engines, they do offer the ubiquitous 2.0 turbo that seems popular everywhere else.
Depends on who you ask. Some people don’t want a pick-up bed and would rather the storage be inside. Or could be the perception of a larger cabin.
Also, 2023 Mav prices went up. MSRP of the cheapest Mav ($22,195) is more than the Trax. That version is 2wd only with the hybrid engine. Also, 2023’s are sold out. Expect 2024 MSRP’s to be even higher than 2023. Mavericks are getting marked up between 7-10k over asking. There is no cheap Maverick anymore.
I think there is a market for the Trax. I do agree that it will be mostly a fleet vehicle. Also a good entry level vehicle for younger people just getting started in their career.
We should be asking GM where is the Maverick fighter. GM guessed maybe that the market wouldn’t support mini trucks. They were wrong.
The AWD Trailblazer is a much closer competitor to the Crosstrek in size, performance, and style. The Trax was a subcompact.
Car looks nice with a Mazda CX30 sleek look. Proves GM design, in spite of EV Nox, can design an attractive vehicle. Could see younger buyers drawn to it but Hornet still has better proportions.
No AWD is a dealbreaker for snowbelt states. My guess is this product differentiation is a way to goose Trailblazer and Encore GX sales.
“What a disappointment for retail customers in snowbelt states that just want a reasonably priced, AWD daily driver.”
They do: Subaru.
I fully agree: GM misses the mark again. I refer to a metaphor I have made before. GM is a big ol’ ocean liner, or container ship, headed across the ocean. Big, powerful. But, there is no one in the wheel-house to steer it; the navigation crew had disappeared, and the propulsion – automated – is running without any human supervision.
Where will the ship end up?
If AWD is a must have get the similarly sized Trailblazer
Yea but they might come out with an AWD trim in the future. But this is a really cheap price for what you’re getting, it’s cheaper than a Corolla or Civic with a $21k starting price.
AWD is overrated, 90% of the time you’re not actually using the AWD, it only kicks in when you lose traction unless it’s a 4×4. If you get a good set of winter tires, it’s more effective than AWD with all seasons. I daily drive RWD with a set of Blizzak snow tires in Canadian winters with no problem. You just have to be cautious of how you accelerate.
Curious what mileage the 1.2 liter 2024 trax will deliver
Wow, this is WAYYY better! Still though, I’d opt for the TrailBlazer or Blazer.
Want all wheel drive get a trailblazer, thats what they want you to do, keeps the trax cheaper for the people that dont need awd. simple.
Yea this is literally priced lower than a new Corolla or Civic… and I would rather have a Trax for the same price.
No blue color option? Why?
FWIW, the Chevy website only shows the colors for the Activ trim. Other trims might get other colors.. unless you found something I didn’t.
True, but why not offer the Activ in blue?
I’m glad to see i’m not the only one that’s sad to see blue not on the list. Literally I want the features of the Activ, I might buy it and get it spray painted to blue but it’s an unnecessary extra expense.
They have all the other colors imaginable, even gold, which who buys their cars gold anymore? But not blue? It’s an outrage, truly! I hope by next year when it releases they add a blue option in the end! Truly, I really really do!
Much improved!
Well well well. Good job GM bringing over the Seeker as the Trax for NA! Now market this and the Equinox EV for urban coastal markets and regain market share for Chevrolet.
Now the question is, will this built in Korea like the previous Trax, or in China like the Seeker?
Is it GM’s plan to have SUVs to cover each 3 inch increments in length?
Why do they need so many of them?
Seems like a lot of overlap to me
I agree with you. If the pricing is in small enough increments, customers and move up or down accordingly.
Here where I live, a good friend of mine’s brother works in the parts department of the local Chevrolet agency. I imagine his life is a nightmare with all these models to account for.
Yes it’s also built in South Korea along with the Seeker.
Aren’t all the people who complain about some Buicks coming from overseas going to complain about a Chevrolet coming from South Korea?
Did South Korea suddenly become Communist?
Then no.
NO AWD!!!!!! Big fail for GM. Us folks in the snow belt need AWD.
Dude, the Trailblazer still exists. Or splurge for an Equinox.
did not have to before, removing the option seems laughable. Not offering a Plug in Hybrid AWD option for under 30K seems like a massive mistake.
FWD and snow tires work just fine in even the snowiest of climates. I lived with a RWD Cadillac ATS Performance with Blizzaks and never had an issue. I live in an area of Ontario, Canada that gets a lot of lake effect snow. Still lots of Canadians that don’t want to pay for the AWD.
No AWD is kinda a let down yes but a ‘big fail’? No. FWD has always been good for the snow belt and at this price point for a crossover, the new Trax is an exceptional value. My concern is the lack of a plug in hybrid variant.
Just buy a Trailblazer or Blazer. They look the same anyway.
Incidentally, I’ve never owned an AWD or 4×4, but driven just fine in Michigan winters for over 30 years.
1.2 with a 6 speed. Yikes. I see why no AWD, no power or gear.
I understand why they are not offering AWD but I do wonder if the moving up to the Trail Blazer will pay off… most of these AWD CUVs are total junk anyways… I have seen way more CRVs, RAV4s, Cherokees etc etc in the ditch vs any fwd sedan. I did a full 360 in the middle of the road in a cherokee rental that was in snow mode… I looked at the tires and they were probably original to the car since it only had like 7k miles on it… i was dumbfounded that even happened because the roads were not even that bad and i was going like 20mph. I literally drove to the car rental place on that same road in my sedan with no issues LOL.
But the average consumer is not educated and they see/hear awd and they get a happy feeling vs doing their research or learning how to drive better
Factory tires can be garbage, depending on the vehicle.
I suspect it was the tires. Do the names Nexen or Kumho sound familiar?
Kumho makes a few good tires, but not for factory fitment.
Nexen? Let’s just say that if one has nothing good to say about something, don’t say it, and I have absolutely nothing whatsoever to say about Nexen tires.
What the hell is the point of having sooooooo many subcompact CUV’s? Trax, Fake Trailblazer, plus globally Groove and Tracker? Scale them alllll back to one-I’d pick the Tracker name but on VSS-F and with 1.3 or 1.5T engines and a real automatic transmission. Trailblazer goes back to Colorado-based truck SUV, other nameplates die, go electric, and/or repurposed in some way. And yes, FWD/AWD on EVERY model, except maybe upper ones AWD -only. And find a better name than Activ? Come On…and why does the 1.2 engine exist, especially in this country?
It’s not that simple. Some are built to be cheap by design for “emerging” markets. They may not meet safety or environmental requirements in countries like the US. And not everybody needs AWD. If it adds $2000 to the price, they will lose a lot of buyers on the low end. It’s a big world, and not surprisingly there are different ideas about what a small, cheap car should be. It’s not going to hurt GM to accommodate them, as long as they can keep the number of global platforms and powertrains down.
Finally a Trax that doesn’t look stupid.
I just wish that green got offered across all of Chevy’s lineup.
It’s a nice color, gives it a Crosstrek vibe. It might not work on every single model, but maybe some like the Trailblazer and Colorado.
That green reminds me of the 1975 Lakemist green offered by Pontiac back in the day! Gorgeous.
AWD is overrated….what you need is snow tires….Tires help you go, stop and turn….AWD only helps you go, doesn’t help you stop or turn….I learned this 25 years ago from colleagues in Vermont…living in Connecticut, I don’t go anywhere without snow tires….and the thing is, they are FREE if you own the vehicle long enough to have 2 sets of tires….think about it and get snows.
For Army Seems Ok
So if this is the new Trax, then what was spied a month ago must be the redesign for the Trailblazer:
https://gmauthority.com/blog/2022/09/all-new-2023-chevy-trax-spied-testing-for-the-first-time/
I think it could be a Trailblazer refresh to keep it a step ahead of the new Trax?
Or this is the GMC Granite… Hmmm what if?
First, all the crying about not offering AWD? Seriously? This is the same kind of stuff (complaining) that has now forced all of us to live with huge rims, sunroofs on everything, and huge screens all over the inside, all while being wrapped around the box SUV/CUV.
I could care less that this isn’t going to offer the AWD and am glad they aren’t. They dropped the Spark, Cruze and soon the Malibu, so they need to have something to offer that isn’t $30,000 and higher. Personally, I still feel this is too expensive. But matters not, as it’s just one more crossover that blends in with the rest. At least this one looks nice.
The back needs work, but the front is amazing! Was not expecting this for the Trax
well. in every car launch today, needs after a photoshop review, with touches here and there, and that is what did with this model too. Took 3 pictures in chevrolet website and changed to 3000 x 2000 format, then all wheels made chrome, but the green is ok, turned down the reds to bluish, put a white blinker in outside mirror .. finally it is an accepted car, agree the rear lamp needs some refit, but left as it is. people complained about AWD, really do not know what is that, for me the most important is design and 3 Cylinders ICE is ok. Seems automatic, so good, do not need all those electronics, but wont buy the car either, just seeing what could have been in market, saw the XPeng models too, better exterior design than GM but it is all EV so none option. If our car brokes down, and need a replace, we need then a simpler one in range new € 5000 ethanol, more than 8000 do not pay for a transport
Wow GM knock this out the park what a beautiful vehicle. GM keep putting out quality vehicles like this Mary Barra ain’t going No where .🫠😎
A good redesign. Now, all GM needs to do is make an EV smaller than the Equinox EV.
Bolt
I do like the looks of the new Trax over the Trailblazer, especially over the old Trax, but without AWD, this is a solid pass for me.
Trax will be built in the Chang Won Plant, where the Spark just quit production. Seeker is made in China, exclusively.
Nice looks, good price point. I think GM will have a solid competitior in this market. That interior looks darn nice too for such a budget vehicle.
How is Trax different than the Trailblazer size-wise? Don’t these products overlap?
Love it. Well priced, well featured, great styling, practical space. The only disappointment as others have mentioned, no AWD. This will sell very well in the states.
Makes absolutely zero sense to me as to why GM would chose to NOT offer an AWD option.
Why Pass up on that extra money?
Because in the same sub compact crossover segment there is the up level Trailblazer for AWD. The Trax is a low cost entry level crossover with many features which makes it a great value proposition. Also it seems the Trax was not built with AWD in mind, its Asian twin the Seeker which is already on sale does not have AWD.
Still makes no sense as to why GM is willingly passing up on extra revenue on one of their vehicles for a highly covered feature. Correct me if I am wrong but doesn’t the Current Trax come with AWD as does the Trailblazer?
So again if that is the case it makes no sense why GM is willingly giving up extra Revenue!!!
Glad it’s not dead and still ICE! Now bring on the ICE Montana!
For all the people bemoaning AWD, I wonder how people 20 years ago every drove anywhere without AWD? It’s just a miracle they survived.
@Mark
Nobody is saying that AWD is needed for todays Drivers. We are stating that it is coveted by Drivers today and GM made a decision to pass on extra revenue which they desperately need for their EV Shift they are undertaking right now. So yeah it makes no sense not to offer AWD.
I honestly don’t know how people can even look at these things anymore. Just another overlapping cute ute and less sedans so it doesn’t remotely interest me. Lack of AWD will limit sales especially in the snow belt areas and it has little to do with if the customer needs it or not. Most buying decisions are based on what is popular and the lack of extra security provided by AWD will be a deal breaker for many. Killing off all of their sedans and forcing the public to pay well over 20K is also a mistake and huge blunder on both GM and Fords part judging by the sheer number of Mirages seen driving all over the place. The recession will hopefully reset the crazy mindset that everybody seems to have today on paying more and more and going bigger and bigger.
Wow… a Very nice design…. has a great look both inside and out!
Why is GM NOT making Hybrid Engines?? why? i would buy one!
I really like the styling both inside and out. One of their better designs. The increased roominess is also a big step up from the old Trax. Too bad they forgot to put in an engine! I would bet the weight will be between 3200 and 3500 pounds, and that tiny 1.2 will struggle to get out of it’s own way. The 6 speed won’t help, either. The only way turbo charged engines get decent mileage is if one stays off the boost. When under boost, the pistons are sprayed with extra gas for additional cooling. This undersized engine will have absolutely NO torque off boost, so more throttle and boost will be required to get adequate acceleration in the real world. The lack of gears will exacerbate this. It will get decent EPA ratings, but relatively poor MPG in actual use (the EPA cycle uses very slight acceleration, so no boost necessary). An optional 1.5 3 cylinder paired with the 9-speed auto would do a lot better, and would allow for AWD. Many people in the snow belt won’t even consider a car without AWD, whether they really need it or not.
I agree that Chevy has way too many entries in this class, but I do like the styling, and I’m not an SUV kind of guy. Again , too bad they forgot the engine.
Nice design!!
