Positioned midpack in the Bow Tie brand’s crossover lineup, the Chevy Equinox stands as one of the more popular Chevy products. As such, many consumers, including new parents, consider purchasing an Equinox when looking for a new vehicle. With this in mind, the 2023 Chevy Equinox was rated as one of the best vehicles for fitting car seats.
According to a report from Cars.com, the 2023 Equinox was one of six vehicles to earn straight As in scoring measures. Notably, the compact crossover was the only domestic product to be rated as such. To that point, the other vehicles that scored straight As include:
- 2023 Acura RDX
- 2022 / 2023 Audi E-Tron
- 2023 Kia EV6
- 2023 Volkswagen ID.4
- 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan
It’s worth noting that although the 2023 GMC Terrain wasn’t tested, it’s likely that Big Red’s compact crossover would score similarly to the Equinox due to the two vehicles sharing the same architecture.
“Cars.com has tested over 700 vehicles for car seat fitment to help inform parents about the best family-friendly vehicle options available to them on the market today,” Cars.com News Editor and Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician Jennifer Geiger was quoted as saying. “In order for a vehicle to earn an ‘A’ rating, the vehicle must have sufficient room for the child and car seat, but not impact legroom for the driver or front passenger. The vehicle’s car seat LATCH system also must be conveniently accessible and easy to use.”
As is evidenced in the top-ranked vehicles, crossovers scored the best in the Cars.com study, likely due to ample quantities of legroom. Bearing that in mind, this study complies data from July 2022 to July 2023 and gauges the responses from certified child passenger safety technicians. Techs installed three types of car seats into each of the 56 vehicles tested and evaluated the LATCH system, as well as how each product accommodates the different seats.

Meanwhile, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rates the current Equinox and Terrain “Poor” for rear passenger protection in their updated moderate test, and it is no longer a Top Safety Pick. Hopefully GM substantially improves this with the upcoming redesign.
