Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Equinox sales during the third quarter of 2023 placed GM’s best-selling crossover in fifth place among 16 entries in the mainstream compact crossover segment when ranked by sales volume. For the first time in two years, the Honda CR-V unseated the Toyota RAV4 to take the top spot as sales jumped 59 percent to 98,654 units. Interestingly enough, the same scenario took place this quarter in the midsize mainstream sedan segment, where the Chevy Malibu competes against the Accord and Camry. In that space, however, Honda took the mantle away from Toyota for the first time in at least a decade. The Toyota RAV4 placed second with an eight percent uptick to 75,919 units, while the Nissan Rogue followed in third with a 49 percent bump to 63,346 units, and the Hyundai Tucson placed fourth with a 27 percent increase to 52,589 units. The Chevy Equinox (see running Chevy Equinox sales) took fifth with a four percent spurt to 48,291 units. The GMC Terrain (see running GMC Terrain sales), the Equinox’s corporate cousin and D2 platform mate, placed 11th with a five percent dip to 17,003 units.

The GM Authority Take

Though Chevy Equinox sales increased during the third quarter, the performance lagged that of the segment. Even so, combining sales of the Equinox and GMC Terrain gave GM a third-place showing again against perennial favorites. Speaking of those, unprecedented movement transpired during the quarter, as Honda made inroads into Toyota RAV4 sales territory, taking the lead for the first time in two years thanks to sales of the all-new 2023 Honda CR-V. For the Bow Tie brand’s part, a next-generation Chevy Equinox is on the way for the 2024 calendar year as the 2025 Chevy Equinox, and may give GM’s best-selling crossover a fighting chance for the top spot.

Though the next-gen model is on the horizon, the current Equinox remains competitive, placing fifth among 16 entires in the mainstream compact crossover segment. The suboptimal sales performance is the result of constrained Equinox availability at the dealer level. In fact, Equinox inventory was at 18 days supply in July, up from 14 days in June and in May, improving to 24 days in August. The Chevy brand overall was running at 57 days supply in September. A 60-day supply is considered optimal in the U.S. auto industry by many automotive sales organizations such as the National Automotive Dealers Association (NADA). For reference, a 60-day inventory level means that dealerships have enough inventory on hand to sustain sales volume for roughly the next 60 days.

Going forward, we expect Chevy Equinox sales to continue roughly at their current levels, so long as inventory allows.

About Chevy Equinox

The 2024 Chevy Equinox arrives with only a handful of updates and changes prior to the debut of an all-new fourth generation. For example, pricing breakouts for the 2024 Chevy Equinox show that the LT became $1,795 more expensive, while the starting price of the RS trim rose by $250. Both of these increases are the result of new packages now being included as standard. Check out complete 2024 Equinox pricing with options.

As in prior model years, front-wheel drive is included as standard across all 2024 Chevy Equinox trim levels, with all-wheel drive offered as an optional upgrade. Motivation for the 2024 Equinox comes from the new-for-2023 turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine, which produces 175 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque.

Recently the Chevy Equinox was praised for ease of child seat installation and noted for having top-quality seats.

Next-gen, 2025 Chevy Equinox RS

As for the next-gen model, our spies first spotted the 2025 Chevy Equinox prototype testing last November and again in December, and most recently in March. Also, GM Authority was the first to report that the next-gen Equinox will also get an Activ trim level like the one offered on the current generation Chevy Trailblazer and all-new 2024 Chevy Trax. In June images of the next-gen Equinox leaked online, revealing a more rugged exterior design compared to the current model, while offering our first glimpse of the Activ trim.

Most recently, GM accidentally leaked the 2025 Chevy Equinox in a new video ad. Chevy quickly took down the video and edited out the 2025 Equinox, replacing it with a segment showing the 2024 Trax.

2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV RS

Meanwhile, the 2024 Chevy Equinox EV will launch in the near future, with GM already building Equinox EV units. The Equinox EV will feature as standard a single Ultium Drive electric motor powering the front wheels, rated at 210 horsepower and 242 pound-feet of torque. An optional ‘eAWD’ system will also be offered, rated at 290 horsepower and 346 pound-feet of torque. In February the 2024 Chevy Equinox EV began road testing.

In October, GM announced that the launch of the Equinox EV would be delayed a few months due to software integration fine-tuning. Pricing of the 2024 Equinox EV was revealed at the end of October, with orders set to open in November.

Furthermore, while mass-market EV ownership is typically costlier than that of ICE vehicles, the Chevy Equinox EV could change that. The Bow Tie brand’s upcoming all-electric crossover was introduced with an approximate $30,000 starting MSRP for the entry-level 1LT trim. In comparison, the ICE Chevy Equinox’s price ranges from $28K to $35K. Both the all-new EV model as well as the next-gen, 2025 Equinox internal combustion model will be sold side-by-side for the time foreseeable future, especially as the ICE version gets a makeover.

  1. Because GM can’t get them from the MX plant into the country. Being in its final year of this gen, with vehicle prices over-the-top, this should be in good supply and discounted to the hilt. But, except for California (of course), it’s not.

    1. Mick 1: Not totally sure what you are saying, but I’m agreeing with you. It never fails to amaze me how F-ing loyal the Asians are to their brands while living here, and yet so many Americans just keep buying and sending their money to Japan. If we Americans were as loyal as the rest towards their brands, GM and Ford would sell a lot more vehicles.

And for those who still try to say that the Japanese brands are better, they are full of it. Buick has been outranking them all for many years and Chevy has been as good or better for the past 10+ years. Personally, I think many just have some twisted preference for an “import” brand. Even if it’s a cheap Nissan or over-rated Mazda.
