Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Colorado sales saw the Bow Tie brand’s midsize pickup truck keep third place from the previous quarter in its segment when ranked by sales volume during the first quarter of 2024. The Toyota Tacoma again took the top spot but barely held on as sales plummeted 60 percent to 21,558 units as it goes through a generational changeover with the impending arrival of the all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma. The Nissan Frontier jumped up to second place with a 17 percent bump to 19,744 units and less than 2K deliveries behind the Tacoma. The Colorado (see running Chevy Colorado sales) placed third with a 13 percent uptick to 14,922 units, while the Gladiator fell to fourth with a four percent dip to 12,989 units. The GMC Canyon (see running GMC Canyon sales), the Colorado’s corporate cousin, stayed in fifth place with a nine percent swell to 5,484 units, followed by the Ford Ranger (see running Ford Ranger sales), again in last place, with an 83 percent dive to just 1,918 units, which continues to go through a generational changeover for the all-new 2024 Ford Ranger.

The GM Authority Take
Chevy Colorado sales fared well to start the year as its generational changeover played out. However, that switchover is now impacting sales of the Toyota Tacoma and still affecting sales of the Ford Ranger, both maintaining their top and bottom spots, respectively.
Surprisingly, the Nissan Frontier jumped up to second place during Q1 2024, while the refreshed 2024 Jeep Gladiator has yet to make any headway against competitors.
Chevy Colorado sales combined with the GMC Canyon put GM in second place ahead of the Frontier and, shockingly, within just 1,152 deliveries of the Tacoma. But we suspect all bets will be off once the full lineup of Toyota’s all-new midsize pickup truck hits the market.
About Chevrolet Colorado
The all-new, third-generation 2023 Chevy Colorado arrives, featuring a new exterior, a new powertrain, plenty of onboard technology, and a completely revised interior. The new model rides on an updated platform, resulting in a more refined truck that is also more capable off-road.
Under the hood resides one of two powertrains – the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L2R gasoline engine as well as the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B engine in Turbo Plus and Turbo High Output configurations. The new powerplants are mated to a new-generation eight-speed automatic transmission, which is vastly improved compared to the preceding GM eight-speed automatic, though a few issues still remain.
A 2023 Colorado ZR2Â Desert Boss Special Edition kicks off the new midsize pickup truck launch, with “just north of 600” units built.
The Chevy Colorado is among NACTOY Truck of the Year finalists, having survived multiple rounds of selection in the 30th annual North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards to be one of the three category finalists competing for the Truck of the Year award.
Furthermore, the Chevy Colorado was just named the 2024 MotorTrend Truck of the Year.
This past May, GM unveiled the all-new 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, the highly capable off-road midsize pickup truck developed in partnership with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). For 2024, the ZR2 Bison is offered as a standalone trim level rather than as a package. In addition to a wealth of standard components from AEV, the 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison also incorporates development input from off-road racing champion Chad Hall and was refined on the Rubicon Trail to boot, adding new features like front and rear jounce control dampers.
The 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, incidentally, gets a standard bed-mounted spare, a new launch control feature, and a new Recovery Package. Its arrival means the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss Special Edition package will not return for the 2024 model year, indirectly replaced by the Bison.
Furthermore, the 2024 Chevy Colorado drops the 8-inch driver information center, replaced by the 11-inch DIC across the lineup, and drops the mid-level Turbo Plus engine, adopting the GM’s new TurboMax engine branding as part of changes and updates for the 2024 model year. That means the 2024 Colorado will offer just the base L2R engine on WT and LT trim levels and the High Output L3B TurboMax engine on all other models while optional on those lower trims. On a related note, here are the towing capacities of the 2024 Colorado.
The 2024 Colorado also offers a new Sports Bar Package and a new Off-Road Lighting Package.
Check out everything that’s new and different for the 2024 Chevy Colorado.
Currently, the fastest-turning trim level for the third-generation midsize pickup truck is the all-terrain-focused Colorado ZR2.
Edmunds picked the 2024 Chevy Colorado for its “Top-Rated 2024” Truck category, saying it is “one of the best pickup trucks currently on sale.”
Production of the 2024 Colorado began at the GM Wentzville plant in January, though shipments were initially delayed and then proceeded on to dealers in spite of a stop-sale order reportedly related to a potential software issue that may have impacted up to 15K units.
Production of the 2025 Colorado is slated to start on October 28th.

Yikes on the Ford Ranger sales. With all the chatter on recent posts on the compact segment and GM’s absence, how much is Ranger’s plummeting sales due to the Maverick? Ford sold over 90 k Mavericks last year.
And who know Nissan sold that many Frontiers?
It is because they are currently switching to the new generation, ditto with Toyota. It will pick up later.
If I were going to buy a Ford not-full-size pickup, there is no way I’d buy a Ranger over a Maverick. The Maverick’s cab is bigger, the Maverick’s payload is about the same, the Maverick’s MPG is double, and the Maverick’s cost is almost half.
And don’t argue towing. If I were going to tow, I’d get a full-size, and if towing were my main purpose, a 250.
If Ford sold 90k Mavericks how come I don’t see many on the roads. Where ae they?
The GM twins have poor sales entirely due to no inventory. I ordered in Early Feb and still do not have a build date, Dealers in this area have 0 inventory of either GMC or Chevy mid sizers
What a shame , truck of the year at MT and you cannot buy one at any price !!!
GM has their head up their a** when it comes to supplying vehicles people want in a timely manner.
A Nissan beat Chevy. Even with the change over that’s tough. The Frontier is a decent looking truck though. All the mid size trucks except the Ranger look pretty aggressive. The Ranger has styling from a decade ago.
Uh well the ’24 Ranger looks much more like a baby F-150. Ford did what Chevy did, they completely rebodied the Ranger and put it on an evolution of the old chassis.
And therein lies the problem. The Colorado and Canyon look nothing like a Silverado or Sierra. They are distinctive in styling. Ford does nothing for me with their styling as evident with the baby F150. Yawn.
I don’t care, there’s no excuse for the Nissan beating the Chevy! I’m so tired of all the excuses!
Nissan was giving them away “ not selling them. I was tempted to buy one…but they get a really bad write up and are on the list of the 10 worst vehicles for 2024. Colorado, Tacoma, Canyon and new Ranger are all much better trucks
Most dealers in my area have maybe two on their lots (Colorado & Canyons) and mainly loaded ZR2 types. Friend has been looking for a WT for months with no luck in NE MS/ NW AL.
They easily would have top sales position if you could find one or even order one. I have a ZR2 waiting for a build date since Dec 23.
Not surprising about the Canada numbers. Absolutely, positively ZERO inventory. Actually pretty frustrating. But then again, Ford is even worse with not even a whisper and Toyota is barely able to get more than one Tacoma per dealership. Is this a trend in poor management?
If GM would actually give out allocations, those numbers would go up. They can’t back up what they’re advertising with all the constraints on parts. If your dealership doesn’t have high volume, good luck getting the truck you want.
The only Asian-branded vehicle I ever owned was an ‘86.5 Nissan Hardbody SE-V6, shortbed regular cab with Nissan’s excellent V6 (that is still around and doing fine) and a 5 speed stick. I have fond memories of it because I beat the crap out of it and it always came back for more. Being a Chevy guy at heart, I tended to test its limits. It never broke. I would buy a new Frontier today, simply because of that V6, and extended cab availability that Chevy thinks we don’t deserve.
Bring back the Cyclone like we’ve been teased with in our car magazines! Reading those articles make me drool wanting one! The lower stance and aggressive look is great. Besides, not everyone wants to be driving off roads in the mud and over rocks. Tomg
