The third-generation Chevy Colorado pickup truck was unveiled for the 2023 model year with a long list of updates and changes, including new exterior styling, an overhauled cabin, and a new engine. At the top of the 2023 Colorado lineup, GM offered the highly capable Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss, a special edition model dressed to impress with various off-road components and equipment. Now, GM Authority has learned how many 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss units were produced.

Chevy spokesperson Shad Balch told GM Authority that General Motors produced “just north of 600” units of the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 with the optional Desert Boss Special Edition Package. Tagged with RPO code ZDB, the Desert Boss Special Edition Package was priced at $9,295 and included the following content (relevant RPO codes listed in parentheses):

  • Black nameplates (RIK)
  • Bed-mounted sport bar with “ZR2” sail panel (SBY)
  • Off-Road front bumper with safari bar (SD0)
  • 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels (SMY)

GM Authority previously provided a full walk-around video on the 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss, giving viewers an in-depth overview of what the package includes and what it looks like, so check that out for more information.

As GM Authority was the first to report, GM dropped the Desert Boss Special Edition Package following the conclusion of the 2023 model year, following it up with the ZR2 Bison. The new-for-2024 Colorado ZR2 Bison is an indirect replacement for the Desert Boss Special Edition Package. It even includes a selection of content previously included with the Desert Boss package, such as decals, the off-road bumper safari bar, and a light bar.

As for the powertrain, all Colorado ZR2 models are equipped with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. An updated variant of the GMT 31XX platform provides the underpinnings, with production taking place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.

  1. I don’t know how to email GM authority but FOX shocks just posted on Instagram a Silverado teaser with live valve shocks and 700 written in the dirt so we may be getting a 700 horse power real raptor/trx competitor.

  2. I’d consider buying the Desert Boss edition but I still like to use my truck bed…and this one is useless. I wish GM would return to the Extended Cab, then the truck bed can be used for other things than collecting rain. I rarely have any passengers in my back seats except for grand kids and they fit just fine in the jump seats.

  3. I just got the Desert Boss in Nitro Yellow Metallic 2 weeks ago and I LOVE it! Hopefully, it will be worth a little more in the future being only 1 of 600 made. I got a pretty good deal at $8000 off of MSRP, almost like getting the package for free.
