The Toyota Tacoma continued to command the top spot, inspire of a 10 percent drop in sales to 55,087 units. The Gladiator moved ahead of the Colorado to second place with a 22 percent slip to 13,660 units. The Colorado (see running Chevy Colorado sales) placed third with a 40 percent drop to 12,396 units. The Nissan Frontier remained in fourth with a 38 percent slide to 12,240 units, but the GMC Canyon (see running GMC Canyon sales), the Colorado’s corporate cousin, moved up a spot to fifth place ahead of the Ranger with a 52 percent drop to 3,107 units. The Ford Ranger (see running Ford Ranger sales) fell to last place in the segment with a 92 percent dive to a measly 831 units. The entire segment was in the red during the last quarter of the year.

The GM Authority Take

The 40 percent drop in Chevy Colorado sales during the fourth quarter of 2023 nearly matched its experience during the first quarter of 2023, when the all-new, next-generation model began rolling out. So while a generational changeover impacted sales at the beginning of the year, the UAW strike at the GM Wentzville plant took its toll on sales during the last quarter of the year. As a result of the strike, Colorado and Canyon inventory was down to just 29 days supply in September.

It’s worth noting that Colorado sales made their strongest gain ever against the Tacoma during the third quarter, and the Colorado had its best retail sales month since 2020 last June. This time around, however, the whole segment was down, closing out the year in the red across the board. It would appear that fewer customers bought a new midsize truck for Christmas.

In spite of the Colorado introducing an all-new, next-generation model for 2023, one that has won various awards and is more capable than ever, most other entries in the midsize mainstream pickup truck segment have upped their game as well, showing just how competitive this space is.

For instance, the all-new 2024 Ford Ranger was recently revealed, though sales were negatively impacted by the generational changeover. After that, the refreshed 2024 Jeep Gladiator will arrive early this year, while the all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma, already the undisputed sales leader in the segment, just arrived to continue challenging all contenders, including the Colorado.

About Chevrolet Colorado

The all-new, third-generation 2023 Chevy Colorado arrives featuring a new exterior, a new powertrain, plenty of on-board technology, and a completely revised interior. The new model rides on an updated platform, resulting in a more refined truck that is also more capable off-road.

Under the hood resides one of two powertrains – the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L2R gasoline engine as well as the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B engine in Turbo Plus and Turbo High Output configurations. The new powerplants are mated to a new-generation eight-speed automatic transmission, which is vastly improved compared to the preceding GM eight-speed automatic, though a few issues still remain.

A 2023 Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss Special Edition kicks off the new midsize pickup truck launch.

The Chevy Colorado is among NACTOY Truck of the Year finalists, having survived multiple rounds of selection in the 30th annual North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards to be one of the three category finalists competing for the Truck of the Year award.

Furthermore, the Chevy Colorado was just named the 2024 MotorTrend Truck of the Year.

2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison

This past May, GM unveiled the all-new 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, the highly capable off-road midsize pickup truck developed in partnership with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). For 2024, the ZR2 Bison is offered as a standalone trim level rather than as a package. In addition to a wealth of standard components from AEV, the 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison also incorporates development input from off-road racing champion Chad Hall, and was refined on the Rubicon Trail to boot, adding new features like front and rear jounce control dampers.

The 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, incidentally, gets a standard bed-mounted spare, a new launch control feature, and a new Recovery Package. Its arrival means the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss Special Edition package will not return for the 2024 model year, indirectly replaced by the Bison.

Furthermore, the 2024 Chevy Colorado drops the 8-inch driver information center, replaced by the 11-inch DIC across the lineup, and drops the mid-level Turbo Plus engine, adopting the GM’s new TurboMax engine branding as part of changes and updates for the 2024 model year. That means the 2024 Colorado will offer just the base L2R engine on WT and LT trim levels, and High Output L3B TurboMax engine on all other trims while optional on those trims. On a related note, here are the towing capacities of the 2024 Colorado.

The 2024 Colorado also offers a new Sports Bar Package and new Off-Road Lighting Package.

Check out everything that’s new and different for the 2024 Chevy Colorado.

  1. I suppose this drop in sales has nothing to do with all the numerous first year bugs being reported like easily dented roofs, botched OTA software updates, build quality issues, etc.

    1. They lost me offering no extended cab, I need the extra foot bed space, I will never buy a truck with a 4 cylinder and never a turbo, I’m keeping my 2021 and I love it, I have always traded in every 3 years, they try to shove down our throats anything they want, not for me,

  2. I work friend of mine bought a Canyon last summer. By November he had traded it for a Sierra diesel. He had so many electrical gremlins he could not take it any more. His Canyon was at the dealership for half the time he owned it, and the whole dash was removed and dissected for faults. Dealer didn’t put it back before he traded it for the Sierra. Very patient man.

    1. A family member bought a Colorado, and got from the dealer to a local event. Then, the dashboard looked like a Las Vegas light show, the engine made some strange noises, and it died. He called the dealer; they sent a truck to some get it. Obviously it started right up when the truck got there. Still, because the paperwork was not yet processed, they “unwound” the deal.

Another truck on the lot suited his purposes and he took that one. It lasted long enough for a cross country move, then the electronics puked its guts, the engine made odd noises, and died. They got it running, offered him a REALLY GOOD price for it, so he dumped it and bought something else that was not General Motors.

  3. Who would have guesses that the whole segment is down? It can’t be because a midsize truck is now often 50k or more right?

  4. My thing is, they jacked up the price. They took away two bodystyles. They did away with the V6 and the diesel. They pretty much cut out a chunk of potential buyers that bought, and loved, the old version. And they seem to be of crappy build quality. Only substantive improvement I am detecting is the interior, and that, really, is only on the upper trims. The WT, LT and Trailboss are all pretty darn basic inside for the price they’re asking.

    1. But where is the engineer mouth here to stick up for this highly refined SMOOTH 4 cylinder POWERHOUSE that gets 1mpg better than the V6? This 4 cylinder turbo is fantastic and will run 300,000 no problems! For $46K-to $52,000 I sure hope this is the case.

  11. I’m still waiting for my GMC Canyon Denali, ordered 3-31-2023. It will go to a 2024 model, but the dealer can’t get an allocation to build from the factory. GM has their collective heads up their arses, in my opinion. No wonder sales are down. Go figure.

  12. Hmm….they must have all gone to Toyota Tacoma with the V6, remaining 2023 inventory! Even the refreshed 2024 Tacoma is a 2.4L Turbo 4 cylinder. 4 cylinders not gonna fly at this price point for long.

So in December I find out that my truck order was canceled, got on line and found one in transit at a dealership 153 miles away. Called to see if it was sold and was told no, so I bought it sight unseen. The exact truck I ordered in August and this was built in December

  17. Could the sales drop also be because there is NOT the 3.6 v6 engine option available? I was almost ready to consider the Colorado when the body style was changed but, took it out of my mind when I saw the best you could do for a drivetrain was a 4 cylinder. Too Bad Chevy, the 3.6 v6 most likely could have increased your sale a great deal.

  19. Wonder how many Ford Mavericks these were replaced by. The current Colorado is too big to be a current market leader. The coming trend is smaller and hybrids and I pray small diesels. Lets discard the EPA into the trash and Let Volkswagen begin to import their small diesel pickups and show the US the rest of the world is correct. Small diesels getting 40 or 50 MPG is what smart countries are doing to reduce carbon footprint. I’d be elated to see an all wheel drive diesel hybred the size of the original S10’s with a minimum 6 foot long box. My current favorite vehicle is my 2010 5.3 v8 Colorado getting 18 MPG if my right foot holds itself back. Defund the EPA and make life bearable.

  23. After owning 2 Chevy Colorados and getting excellent service from both of them, I ordered a 2023 Colorado from my dealership in West Central Texas in March 2023. IT WAS NEVER DELIVERED!!! Even after the strike was resolved, it never came in! I was forced to go to Fort Worth Texas and buy the one Colorado they had on the lot – without many of the options I previously ordered. You can’t sell merchandise you don’t manufacture and can’t deliver. I keep having trouble with electronics in the dash and don’t get the mileage I would expect from a 4-cylinder. Several functions previously on the dash and smartstick now must be activated by going through 2 or 3 screens, causing me to take my eyes off the road. Whose brilliant idea was that?! I’ve driven Chevrolets for 45 years. Very disappointed to be treated this way and will have to look elsewhere for a truck next time

  24. I have a 2018 Canyon and was waiting for the 2023’s because they changed stuff. Yeah they changed stuff. No more long box and they dropped both the Duramax and the V6 for a turbo 4 banger. “Oh it still puts out 300HP” they say. Yeah let’s see how it does in the mountains. So I’m keeping my 2018. Already moding it.

  25. I bought a 2023 Colorado Z71 early Oct I really did NOT want the turbo 4 – I had a 2016 Trail boss with the V6 before and liked everything about that truck but needed a new truck, the 2023 price wise to my old one was only $4000 more so price wasn’t bad, but if they come out with a V6 in these new ones this 4cyl is going back, I towed a car trailer with a car on it 400 miles it towed it no problems but gas mileage was less than 10mpgs the entire time and I was babying it constantly watching the gas guage and mileage til empty quickly going down, the V6 got better mileage towing for sure and did it just as good, maybe the issue with low sales are the interest rates thru GM and other credit unions they searched are sky high right now, even with my 777 credit score the best they could find was 6.99% 1/3 of my payment goes to interest, ridiculous! My 2016 thru GM was 1.9% The 2023 truck itself 3 months in I’ve had no issues like others that bought the early production had, the only thing that really bothers me is there’s no actual headlight switch everything is thru the center screen, I’m early 50s I like the old style switches and buttons like the previous truck had, everyone knows first year vehicles always have bugs to kink out will see what happens in a year or two if they have better engine choices, when the warranty on the drivetrain ends in 5 years I’ll be trading it back in I’m sure
