General Motors has issued a stop-sale order for new 2024 Chevy Colorado and 2024 GMC Canyon pickup trucks. The stop-sale order is reportedly related to a potential software issue, and could affect as many as 15,000 units. New 2024-model-year pickups trucks are reportedly shipping to dealers now, although none have been delivered to customers.
Per a report from Automotive News, the stop-sale order is not related to any safety issue and is expected to be quickly lifted. In a statement, GM vice president of global technology communications, Brandee Barker, said that “intermittent software quality issues” were identified during the vehicle validation process, and that a “fix has been identified and implemented into vehicles that have begun shipping to dealers this morning.”
GM implemented new software testing and quality processes following a stop-sale order issued for the Chevy Blazer EV late last year. GM’s software and services team is led by Mike Abbott, who joined GM from Apple.
Just last week, GM Authority published a series of articles asking just what is happening with 2024 Chevy Colorado shipments and 2024 GMC Canyon shipments. As covered previously, production for both midsize pickups began at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri last month, but shipments to dealers had yet to begin. Per a GM Authority source, new units were being held for “quality” similar to the way in which new units of the 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon were held for the launch of both all-new third-gen pickups.
Last July, GM Authority reported that some 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon owners were complaining that their pickups’ battery was losing charge following an over-the-air (OTA) software update. GM released a Service Update to address this issue late last year. The fix included new programming for the Engine Control Module (ECM) and Serial Data Gateway Module.

Well, well it appears there is a software issue affecting all of these vehicles. Too bad for all of the early adopters who placed orders before the trucks were in production. Besides having to wait, you now have to accept a “new” vehicle that you’ll always know was defective from its roll off the line. Just hope the fix is quicker than 4-6 months. But if it is, start putting your monthly payment in a HYSA. Then when the truck arrives make a bigger down payment and lower your monthly. Gotta make something good out of this delay,
Yeah, I feel bad for the early adopters too. They’ll have their trucks first without the software issue and you’ll still be here complaining. But at least you won’t have a minor software issue to deal with.
News Flash … it doesn’t take months to fix a “minor software” issue. It’s been more than a year since this 1st came up, it’s obvious they don’t know what the **** they’re doing.
Great job, Mary.
All Certain people ever do is down Mary and try to put GM down. Hey I actually own a 2023 Colorado Z71 and I absolutely love it!
It now has over 14,000 miles on it and it’s certainly exceeded my expectations, it’s a absolutely a fantastic truck.
Phil why do you constantly troll this GM site and make negative comments? I had a 2022 Tacoma before this 2023 Colorado and I will tell you first hand these trucks are much better then any other midsize available. And this is my 4th midsize truck that I have owned since 2015.
I don’t work for GM and never have. I am not brand loyal to any particular brand. I also know the the 2024 Tacomas where held up for quality issues and so are the Ford Rangers both are also software related as well.
I actually drove a new 2024 Tacoma and to be frank they are not even as nice as the 2023 Toyota Tacoma. I was disappointed it seems like Toyota is going backwards. I promise my 2023 Z71 Colorado is much better then the New 2024 TRD pro Tacoma I recently drove. I will check out Ranger as soon as one is available in my area.
I have a 23 Canyon and my experience has been more in line with Phil’s thought that they don’t know WTF they are doing. My truck built in summer 23 is in for the battery drain for the second time. It’s been there for 40 days. They don’t know how to fix it.
Also, they’ve had a part on order to fix a separate issue since November.
It’s nice that yours is great, but it’s weird to pretend these issues don’t exist for other people
My 2023 Colorado has been at their shop, far longer than in my own driveway. Started having “software issues” day one! Fun stuff… Paying for a new vehicle and driving a 10 year old loaner. Purchased last July
True on the Tacoma, watched the snow covered hill climb video yesterday where the new 2024 TRD broke something in the drive so it became a 2 wheeler. it had to be towed by a 2024 Colorado back out, pretty funny.
My 2023 2wd Elevation Colorado is also an exceptional truck with zero issues and I have been driving mine since march of 2023. I have 9k miles on mine and I haven’t touched the primary trip selector since I drove it off the dealer lot and it reads 17.9 MPG at 9k miles of average driving. Love my truck more than the day I picked it up at the Dealership.
I would have hoped they would have come up with a fix for the 2023 trucks that have these software and computer issues.
And exactly who is willing to trust having your entire lighting system baked into this software package? Maybe GM needs to stop being so cheap and bring back a physical light button/knob. I don’t trust their software systems…..for obvious reasons.
Why would GM want apple developer doing this. You could clearly see how apple is a train wreck as is and you want that kind of issue on your platform.
Android user?
And these are reasons that lead me to by a vehicle from another. Brand, if you can deliver vehicles in a timely manor it makes it hard to purchase.
Manner
Mary Barra’s reign at GM couldn’t come sooner
Mary Barra and the bean counters are killing GM. They truly could have finally beaten the Tacoma but they insist on putting a 4 cylinder engine in everything so the mileage sucks. And who cares about all that torque when it’s still slower to 60 than the Taco? Sheet metal so thin that car washes are damaging these trucks. GM just wanted to charge fullsize price but they’re making these trucks the laughing stock of the industry. No physical light control? Seriously? They could have been market share leader, but they care more about the profits. Such a waste. Guess we’ll wait another 8 years for the next generation of midsize twins and hope they don’t screw up again. But I really hope they drop a 5.3 V8 in that model. With the ZR2 getting 16MPG but V8 Silverado’s getting 23MPG, why NOT give us a V8?
I agree, but I really like the torque and smoothness of the transmission that they updated on my 2023 Elevation Canyon. I thought I would hate the 4 banger, but I have grown to like it. I blew the doors, off of a 5.3 Chevy truck with mine last month and I thought the dude driving was going to go road rage on me, so I escaped by taking a quick exit off the FRWY. I AGREE about the v6 and a v8 would be spectacular.
It just sucks that these trucks are so expensive and they can’t even make it out of the factory with quality issues. It doesn’t matter what brand, quality has really gone in the crapper
Pretty minor issue in my opinion. Rather get it fixed now than have to deal with it for eternity. Still dealing with a software issue from my 2016 Honda Accord bought in 2015.
Shocking that all of these dog water takes are coming from people that can’t even construct a proper sentence.
Word… I’m as impatient as the next guy, but I can’t imagine that I could single handedly manage an automobile manufacturer from the comment section.
They can’t do it from GM’s headquarters either. Now we discover that some 2023 Colorados have cracked blocks from the factory. WTF?
I own a 2016 Z71 and love it. I was considering buying a new one, but I don’t think I can trust that little 4 cylinder. GM desperately needs to give us a V8 to gain market dominance here. It would be the ONE thing that Toyota and Ford don’t offer. They’re just too stupid (or cheap) to realize it. A damn shame because the new Colorado looks very nice.
Those engines come from what used to be a Saturn plant that I used to work at from 1996 to 1999 in Spring Hill Tennessee. I hope my engine holds up.
Does anyone here remember when trucks were mechanical devices, meant to transport a max of three men and a whole of lot of cargo? Where are we now? It’s like the ultimate silly death of trucks. I cannot think of a more comically tragic way to murder over a century of Chevrolet truck history.
A time when trucks were smaller and the fish were bigger.
Pepperidge Farms remembers….
I’ll explain it to you since you were not alive in the 70s, 80s, and 90s… It’s better now than it ever was.
Sarcasm, right ?
True. I remember driving an S10 and a first gen Colorado my 2023 Canyon is light years ahead of those earlier trucks. I sold a 2019 GMC Sierra with the 5.3 for this newer Colorado because I got tired of feeling like I was driving a bus to work everyday and having to do a 5 point maneuver to park it in the small parking slots at an Aerospace Company. The new 1500s are huge these days which is great if you drive 6 people around with you all the time. My Canyon tows as much as my Sierra does with less hassle and swerves in and out of traffic with ease, is more maneuverable in every way, and stops on a dime and I can reach my wife’s hand without leaning over the counsil.
Just sell me a simple truck, computer not needed. I know it will get lower mileage but I can buy a lot of gas with the savings. I will probably just completely refurbish my 2012 Silverado when the time comes. I bought it new and it now has 90k miles and has never been back to the dealer except for the recall. It has been a fantastic machine. I just don’t think I can get a new one that’s as good. Sad.
Don. By a Honda Ridgeline
“Buy” a Honda Ridgeline.That’s rich!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I bought a 2023 z71, I definitely had software issues the first 3 months. It affected the adaptive cruise control (ACC), wireless charging pad, remote start issues and the sound was sometimes static sounding. After they updated the firmware to #170 at the dealer with a USB not OTA, everything has been fine. Point being everything is tied to the infotainment nowadays.
You don’t need Apple Carplay or Android Auto in your vehicles, we can do it better.
They cannot, in fact, do software better.
I have officially decided on a “Stop Buy”. No longer considering a ZR2 as my next vehicle.
I have a 2024 Canyon AT4 ordered and I have complete faith the issues will be worked out in these trucks. I have a ‘23 Nissan Pro-4X right now and my lease is up in June. I know I most likely won’t have the new truck in by then but I can extend my lease out by 3 months and I’m good with that. Let GM work out the kinks. We already have a darn near perfect truck!
A co-worker has a 23 Colorado Trail boss. He’s put 10k miles on it and has never even had a hiccup. I have a 2024 Colorado ZR2 on order and am perfectly happy to wait. Patience Gentlemen. You shouldn’t rush perfection.
I have a good 2023 Canyon. No issues what so ever. It’s an Elevation 2wd with alot of options. Impeccable truck from front to back.
I currently only 2023 GMC Canyon Denali. I will say I have been definitely disappointed in the quality control and of course I’ve taken it to the dealer and they have been unable to fix and constantly give me the excuse that they need to get with GM and will get back with me whether it’s the blindside intervention on the Sideview mirrors to the trim around the windows hood cowling keeps coming off and when you drive it howls down the road also, after a long trip, you can smell antifreeze, but they can’t find the leak I have had some issues with the info system and currently I am now having a problem where I start the truck and it shows in in kilometers versus Miles per hour and there’s no way to fix it. You will start the vehicle later that day and then it’ll go back the way it should be very strange. Nobody has any clue what is going on that’s the frustrating part I do love the truck word of advice to anyone that does get one if you get it, Denali change the tires and put the Michelin defender LT tires on it then it rides like a dream why they put those other tires on it I’ll never know, but what a difference one last thing disappointed in the gas mileage no matter how you do it 19 miles to the gallon and of course it would’ve been nicer to have a V6 because the truck sounds like it’s a sewing machine. Anyhow, best of luck to those it is worth the wait they just have a lot of kinks to work out.
I have a 2023 Z71 with over 14,000 miles on it and I averaged 22.1 MPG in last 9,167 miles and 21.9 MPG since the first day. I do an even mix of city and highway driving.
I absolutely love this truck. I have just about every factory option available on it, the only thing I wish it had was fold down flat rear seat, for some reason it’s not available it the new body style.
A stop sale order was issued on 2/23 on a 2023 Colorado i was scheduled to take delivery of pending a software update. Unknown when I will be able to get it.
And with all this said I am going to keep my 2021 Z71, crew cab, long bed ,4×4, V-6. Thought about trading up next year for a 2025. Not now or ever. I traded a 2016 Colorado Z71 CCLB V-6 4×4 for my 2021 and in the almost 9 years of Colorado ownership neither truck has had any issues. Owned the 2016 for 5 years and the 2021 for almost 4 years now. Not a fan of the 4 cylinder with turbo. Yes I know the specs, but that 4 cylinder is working a might harder to accomplish the specs as the V-6. Good luck with your 2023 / 24 Colorado’s
Some times I still wish I had my 1980 Ford F100 straight 6 cylinder three on the tree. Simple , dependable, inexpensive to operate and maintain myself, and never broke down. Go figure, in the name of Progress.
