The 2024 Chevy Colorado debuts the second model year for the latest third-gen pickup, introducing several updates and changes over the preceding 2023 model year. Production of the 2024 Chevy Colorado began at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri early last month – however, not a single unit has been shipped to dealers. Which begs the question – just what is going on with 2024 Chevy Colorado shipments?
Some customers are getting anxious, as a number of of 2023-model-year Colorado orders were rolled into the 2024 model year. So far, it sounds as though General Motors has yet to provide any update to customers with regard to when new units of the 2024 Chevy Colorado will finally ship.
GM Authority reached out to General Motors for comment. GM has yet to respond.
For now, there are a few rumors to explain the delay, but nothing concrete. One GM Authority source indicates that new units of the 2024 Chevy Colorado are being held for “quality,” similar to the way in which new units of the 2023 Chevy Colorado were held with the launch of the third-gen pickup.
“During launch, it is a common practice for us to temporarily build and hold vehicles to ensure quality before shipping to dealers,” said the Director of Chevy Truck Communications, Shad Balch, in an email to GM Authority last year concerning delayed delivery of the 2023 Chevy Colorado.
As covered previously, existing GM processes and systems seem to falter when it comes to communicating important information like estimated vehicle delivery times to customers. In a previous GM Authority opinion piece, we argued that GM vehicle tracking is a major problem and should undergo an overhaul.
Unfortunately, the third-gen Colorado hasn’t been without its issues. One of the most noteworthy are dented roofs following the use of a touchless car wash service, with GM only recently issuing a fix. To note, this only applies to 2023-model-year vehicles, and not the 2024 Chevy Colorado.
As a reminder, the 2024 Chevy Colorado offers two engine options, including the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L2R Gasoline engine and turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B TurboMax gasoline engine. The updated GMT 31XX platform provides the bones.

But the media is cranking out tests of them, so some must be being built. And all, of course, are loaded top-of-the-line versions, well over an absurd $50K.
Media will never get a stripped down truck to test. They want to sell the higher end Trim models, So GM programs the sheep to do so.
Over $50? More like over $70K for the every optioned 2024 ZR2 Bison and AT4X AEV editions
How’s it compare to the 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor?
I have been waiting 7 months for a 2024 Chevy Trax I ordered. Dealership says it’s stuck in a California port and that was 3 months ago. This Arizona Chevy dealership knows nothing more or are not inclined to try to find out.
You waited 7 months for a car that you can buy off the lot today? They come in so few color/trim options a bit of searching could easily find you one.
Some times when a vehicle is in port status, it’s actually getting repaired at a local dealership. I know for a fact this happens at one of the ports Korean vehicles ship to because a dealer of mine has 20+ port vehicles at their service department awaiting repairs of some sort. But in true GM fashion, invoiced dealers are left in the dark as to what the actual hold up is.
Without a doubt, the WORST new vehicle roll out in recent GM history.. sign me, “stilllllllllllllll waiting.”
I ordered a 2024 Z71 right as the strike ended. My order hasn’t even been accepted yet. I’ve been in contact with the dealer and they are just waiting as well, they have no additional information. I have seen others post that they went to their dealer last week and the order was accepted already. Very frustrating.
My Dealership said my ZR2 order was accepted about a month ago. I hope that is true.
My dealer is blowing smoke up my tailpipe also. I have been waiting 11 months and no allocation to build yet. The owner tried to get in contact with GM and they are blowing smoke up his tailpipe also. I don’t know what GM’s sales objective is, the others makes don’t seem to have the problems that GM has. I can’t fully express my disappointment in GM.
They probably don’t make any money on these models unless they are the highest trim levels.
They have no incentive to build cars that lose them money.
I ordered the Canyon Denali, which is the top of the line Canyon. You would think that they will make some money on these models.
I was thinking of the autoline video the other day where they looked into what Ford and GM are actually making per vehicle, and it was pretty pathetic.
It’s no surprise that they want to sell high profit margin trucks to everyone.
They’ll just make more smoke up the tailpipe!
It’s not your dealer! I work in a dealership and know for a fact GM treats everyone like a bunch of mushrooms.
after 2 months and that dealer didn’t get an allocation I would try at another dealer since larger dealers get more allocations.
I am in the process of trying to order a 2024 Z71, the dealer cannot advise when the order will be accepted or when it will be built and shipped.
He has 3 others that were ordered a few weeks back, and has a build date of early March for all 3.
2 of these are presold with deposits.
The dealer tried to peak my interest in a TB that is ordered and not yet spoken for, but i want the Z71 , so will have to wait to get what i want.
Hopefully i get it before the 25’s are out!!
save your money and buy a 22 or older.
So it’s still radio silence from the big ship gmc’ on the 2024 twins surprise surprise
I think the issue is GM has done what everyone wanted. Nice looking vehicles with good options. Well they have and did not expect the demand they are getting. The Trax is selling as fast as dealers get them. The dealer I bought my ZR2 from told me they could sell a truck load of Trax a week if they could get them that fast. I bet the suppliers are not able to keep up with demand so GM is in a bind to build them and wait for few parts. Yes its fustrating for those waiting, but Ford is having the the same issue with the new Ranger and seems right now Toyota is not doing much better with the new tacoma.
Our son had ordered a 2023 Silverado 2500HD, in early 2023. Somehow, that order got changed to a 2024! It came in 4 weeks. Our thoughts were, it was already on order and our son took delivery of someone elses 2024. Of course they sold it to him for more than the customer that ordered it. My dealer did the same thing to me in 1969!!! I ordered a 375 HP SS396 Chevelle, Triple Black. I found out later, some one was there when it rolled off the trailer. Another salesman, sold it to that customer for more $. I was told my order was back ordered. I was headed my all espense paid vacation with my Uncle, so I then bought a car off the lot. Yes, believe it! Dealers do this all the time. Not kool! or ethicle!
I had a 79 Dodge Charger that I ordered and was sold to another customer at a higher price. The reason I know, it was my neighbor who was my salesman and gave me a good price. I still had to pry it out of him. Never went back to that dealership. They all are Crooked!
I don’t remember delivery issues like this P-M .
Pre-Mary .
Without a doubt, the WORST new vehicle roll out in recent GM history.. sign me, “stilllllllllllllll waiting.”
“Existing GM processes and systems seem to falter when it comes to communicating important information like estimated vehicle delivery times to customers.”
Heh “seem to falter” is the understatement of the year. “Completely soil the bed” is the correct term. Mary, forget new paint options and bull # like that, get your delivery system fixed first!
Ordered 24 colorado wt 12-21-2024, Per the dealer it has been built and I have an order number and a VIN. The vehicle status is “On Hold” during shipping. Its supposedly on a lot n Wentzville, MO. The dealer has no idea what the hold up is. Got a hold of someone from Chevrolet.com that sounded a lot like an AI bot that said it was in shipping mode. Additionally although most shipment are 3-4 weeks it could take 10-12 weeks. Im not happy my vacation is on hold as well.
I see maybe 2 Colorados on the road. Seen probably 15-20 Canyons. And I live in a major metro area where you see everything including high end and small volume stuff. One of the biggest GM in state dealers is in town. I have seen more Hummers than Canyons
Maybe GM hasn’t been paying the freight company that ships their vehicles??? Probably contract problems they don’t want made public?
I live in a small Mountain town outside of Golden Colorado. I ordered my Colorado ZR2 today! The sales guy didn’t know when they’ll get an allocation, go figure. I bet 6 months if I’m lucky. I am sooo tired of seeing nothing but Subaru’s and Toyota Tacoma’s driving around this state. The management of GM should tool around this state for a week! They’d say, where are
all the Chevy and GMC trucks? So stupid to me, you could sell a boat load of these vehicles, but COVID still lures…..?
According to an article in a major Michigan newspaper today (2/15), Colorado and Canyon are being held due to a software glitch. Sounds like 2023 again.
“For example, the (newspaper) has learned through photos and sources that GM has a large number of its 2024 midsize pickups parked near the Wentzville Assembly Plant in Missouri because the vehicles have software glitches and cannot yet be sold, said two people familiar with the situation. The people are not being named because they are not authorized to speak publicly. GM declined to discuss the details of the situation at Wentzville, saying the vehicles are on hold for quality reasons. GM spokesman Kevin Kelly said in a statement, “Production for the 2024 midsize pickup trucks has begun at GM’s Wentzville Assembly Plant and we are working to ship to customers as soon as possible.”
It sounds like the wait is now on software programmers to fix the holdover mess from 2023. Then a lot of flash updates or chip replacements. Then you may see them moving out of those holding lots.
Sounds like more smoke up the tailpipe!
I’ve got one that was built January 3rd that’s still sitting at Wentzville. In the meantime my trade is losing value…
Frustrated!!
My Colorado was built in January too. My dealer said it’s at the facility that does the spray-in bedliner. It’s been there for two weeks. I sold my vehicle last week. I may have moved too soon.
Mine has been losing value since last March 2023. GM is putting the wood to us!
And smoke up the tailpipe!
I was wondering why GM keeps making their trucks bigger and more fuel thirsty then have to ruin their engines to meet their economy targets. Their 5.3 V8 with cylinder deactivation are no longer reliable. This New Colorado with variable cam lobes does nothing to conserve fuel, it only alters performance and with the turbo system defeats itself entirely. Why use a turbo then shut off the valves to the cylinders.
GM has no choice but to comply with the EPA.
We are getting tired of waiting. Thinking of buying a full size half ton and trust me it won’t be a GM product.
I honestly wonder if they’re just shipping out a few at a time. They don’t want the dealer lots filled like they are now with the Silverado and Sierra. That way they don’t have to start offering incentives because the inventory is stacked up. There is a Chevy dealership near me that’s offering an additional $3000 of their Silverado’s on top of what incentives Chevy is already offering. They have some LT’s and other trims below $50,000
To update on my own comment. Now, they are offering $6000 on higher trim models as well.
Unbelievable. I thought the Z06 roll out was terrible. This is bad!
I ordered a 2024 Z71 two weeks ago, but still no order number. It took me a month to find a dealership that would even respond to my questions and inquiries. The dealer I went with responded within 24 hours and is one of the top 25 by sales volume in the US, and I was told they had a better chance of getting one than the smaller dealers closer by, so I drove an hour to that dealership. My son is banking on getting my 15 Colorado this spring for his 16th birthday, but he will need to wait until my new one comes in. Dealer said 10-12 weeks, so here’s to hoping.
I heard the problem is the Ultifi software system, the same system that is the reason behind the Blazer EV sale stop order must be causing huge problems.
I’ve heard that too. My dealer contacted me yesterday with an order number. He said the only thing he couldn’t get, because it was holding up orders, was the spray-in bed liner. He said he ordered it without because he can have it put in once it is delivered and he figured I wouldn’t want to get stuck waiting on something like that.
I went to multiple dealerships (Ford and Chevy) comparing mid-size vehicles. I happily made a decision to get a Colorado. I found one I was ready to buy that day off the lot, but it didn’t have a hitch receiver! (What is a truck if it can’t pull something). The dealer I was speaking with finally told me it would be easier if I just built and ordered one which I’d never done before.
I put an order in for a 2023 Colorado Trail Boss in July of 2023. In October, they told me they were no longer making 23’s and it was now a 24. Order was accepted by late November and the truck was built in early January. The last update relayed to me was that my truck is still flagged as “delayed in shipment” with no ETA… That was four weeks ago.
The dealership seems to really be in the dark so I don’t blame them, but it’s still disappointing.
You could have ordered a hitch and wiring kit from e-trailer and probably put it on in a couple of hours, easily.
I’m leary to even buy one. If they can’t even deliver any new ones, what happens if mine has a problem after I buy. AM I going to wait months to get a part??? And it sits at the dealer!!
GM has just issued a stop sale because of softtware issues.
https://gmauthority.com/blog/2024/02/gm-issues-stop-sale-order-on-2024-chevy-colorado-gmc-canyon-pickups/
GM cannot program anything apparently.
The hold on 2024 Colorado/Canyon was/is due to software issues discovered by a new software validation and quality team. A fix has been identified and vehicles are being shipped as software is updated. My 2024 has been sitting in Missouri for a couple of weeks. I view this as a potential positive as I would much rather have the software updated prior to delivery vs. bringing it into the dealer for the same. It also fits my preferred delivery date, as I was a bit worried it would arrive too soon. Best of luck to all of you and hope frustrations you feel about waiting on your vehicle do not extend to the rest of your life!
Have one in Missouri for two months
now
My Colorado ZR2 was built on April 9. No shipping info available, dealer knows nothing…. The dealer checks my VIN via their tracking tool everyday, no movement…
I bought a 2023 Chevy Colorado z71 fully loaded in June of 2023. A few weeks after I bought it the entire dash filled up with water after a rain storm. All of the electronics in the dash were damaged. After several weeks of driving a rental, GM decided to “lemon law” the car but it was after several frustrating calls. It is now the end of February and I have yet to receive the replacement truck that I was promised. I have been paying for a truck that I have not driven plus insurance that I have to pay because of the loan. The truck was supposed to go into production on December 18th and that I should get it soon after. I was told that it would ship in January. All lies! Terrible customer service and honesty. I’m having to jump through hoops just to get my refund. 8 months of paying for a truck that I haven’t driven! Who wouldn’t be frustrated. I went through an issue with a new Mercedes several years ago and the level of customer service was excellent. When I told the dealer how great the Mercedes customer service was the response I got was “we are not Mercedes”
We ordered a Z71 Nov 21, 2023. It was built Febr 7, 2024. Still parked in Wentzville waiting to be released from a “Quality Control” hold, now held for what they are calling an “engineering hold.” We had a 23 ordered but didn’t take it when it arrived because you could order a 2024. Now it looks like the 2025 will be available before the 24’s get shipped.
As many recalls going on with the engines brakes and everything else going on I don’t know why you’re even ordering a 2024, I bought the desert boss and no problems at all. Maybe a 2023 would be better value for now .
After 8 months of waiting for a truck that was lemon lawed I decided not to wait any longer and got my money back. So disappointing I also heard that there were issues with the on board computer. I was made numerous promises by GM and the dealer was no help either. If anyone wants to hear my story. Reach out
