The first-ever 2024 Buick Envista, debuting as the Tri-Shield brand's all-new entry-level crossover, is shown here in the Sport Touring (ST) trim.

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Buick Envista sales during the first quarter of 2024 placed the Tri-Shield brand’s new entry-level subcompact crossover 14th out of 21 nameplates when ranked by sales volume, up a spot from the previous quarter. This was the third sales period since the vehicle was launched.

The Subaru Crosstrek held the top spot with an eight percent dip in sales to 38,405 units. The Honda HR-V moved up a spot to second place with a 44 percent bump to 38,062 units. The Chevy Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales), the Envista’s VSS-F platform mate, slipped a spot to third with a 481 percent leap to 37,588 units and within just 474 deliveries of second. The CX-30 jumped up several spots to fourth with a 43 percent swell to 28,496 units, while the Jeep Compass moved down a spot to place fifth with a 19 percent uptick to 27,647 units. The Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales), the Trax’s corporate cousin and Chevy’s second segment entry, dropped to sixth with a 13 percent dip to 24,208 units. In addition to the two Chevy models, GM’s Buick currently fields three entries. The Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), the Trailblazer’s platform mate, placed 11th with a nine percent increase to 13,364 units. The Envista (see running Buick Envista sales) moved up to 14th place with 9,662 deliveries. The Buick Encore (see running Buick Encore sales), with the discontinued model being indirectly replaced by the Envista, finished last with a 98 percent drop to 55 units. The discontinued Toyota C-HR and Ford EcoSport have both fallen off the list.

The Envista earned a three percent market share in its segment. The Crosstrek, HR-V, and Trax each posted an 11 percent segment share, with the Crosstrek down four percentage points year-over-year, the HR-V up a point, and the Trax up nine points. The CX-30 and Compass both held an eight percent share, with the CX-30 up a point and the Compass maintaining its share. The Trailblazer earned a seven percent share, down three percentage points. The two other GM models in this space fared as follows:

  • Encore GX maintained a four percent share
  • Encore’s share was nil, down a percentage point

The five GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer, along with the Buick Envista, Encore, and Encore GX, accounted for a cumulative 84,877 deliveries. That was good for a 25 percent segment share, commanding a quarter of all sales in this space and enough to solidly keep The General in first place overall.

By comparison, the four Stellantis entries—the Jeep Compass, Jeep Renegade, Dodge Hornet, and Fiat 500X—combined saw 40,942 deliveries for a 12 percent segment share.

Meanwhile, Hyundai – with the Kona and Venue – and Kia – with the Seltos, Niro, and Soul – saw a cumulative 63,696 deliveries, good for a combined 19 percent segment share, placing the Korean conglomerate behind GM in second place overall.

An argument can be made that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question but rather competes one segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia entries total nets 51,244 deliveries for a combined 15 percent segment share, keeping the conglomerate in second.

Out of the 10 manufacturers represented here, three field multiple models in this space of now 21 entries, though one of those models has been discontinued and will eventually fall off this list. When combining the sales volume of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in this order:

  • GM – 25 percent share, five models (the Buick Encore has been discontinued, joined now by its indirect replacement, the first-ever Buick Envista)
  • Hyundai Motor Group
    • 19 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
    • 15 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
  • Stellantis – 12 percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued while the all-new Dodge Hornet joins the segment)
  • Subaru – 11 percent share, one model
  • Honda – 11 percent share, one model
  • Mazda – eight percent share, one model
  • Toyota – six percent share, one model
  • Nissan – four percent share, one model
  • VW – three percent share, one model
  • Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model

Lately, it seems that automakers fielding multiple entries in this segment enjoy better sales and higher deliveries, but those with a single model, including Subaru and Honda, seem to hold their own comparatively.

GM commanded first place again ahead of Hyundai Motor Group (which includes Kia) this quarter.

Overall, the mainstream subcompact crossover segment grew 24 percent to 343,607 units during Q1 2024.

The GM Authority Take

The Buick Envista, during its third quarter on sale, moved more than three times as many units as those of the Encore a year ago, the discontinued model it indirectly replaces. Sales of platform mates Envista and Chevy Trax continue to provide GM with strong sales as their respective brands’ new entry-level models. Combined with the other three entries from The General, the Chevy Trailblazer, along with the Buick Encore GX and Encore, places the automaker at the top again, a full six segment share percentage points ahead of the Hyundai-Kia conglomerate fielding as many models.

About Buick Envista

In April, GM debuted the first-ever 2024 Buick Envista for the U.S. market as the Tri-Shield brand’s all-new entry-level crossover. As GM’s first crossover coupe, the Buick Envista incorporates the premium marque’s latest design language initially introduced by the Buick Wildcat EV concept. Highlights include a long wheelbase, a crossover coupe roofline, and a sleek profile. LED checkmark lamps are placed high in the fascia.

This crossover coupe for the masses offers three distinct trim levels: Preferred, Sport Touring, and range-topping Avenir. ST trim levels are equipped with all-black 18-inch wheels as standard, with 19-inch wheels optional. Meanwhile, the Avenir trim level comes with Pearl Nickel 19-inch wheels as standard.

There’s also more legroom than in any small Buick crossover model. The cabin incorporates 19 diagonal inches of combined LCD screens, including an 11-inch diagonal infotainment screen and an eight-inch digital gauge cluster. The trade-off is the lack of a premium sound system. Avenir and ST logos are embroidered on the headrests for each respective trim level. A flat-bottom steering wheel is standard across the range.

The all-new Envista is motivated by the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine, which produces 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. Output is routed through the GM six-speed automatic transmission, driving the front wheels exclusively.

The Buick Driver Confidence Package is included as standard, adding in Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning and IntelliBeam automatic high beams.

GM claims that the Buick Envista offers the driving dynamics of a sedan, which we experienced first-hand.

The 2024 Buick Envista was one of 10 GM models among North American Car of the Year candidates, competing with six of those in the 2024 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year category.

The 2025 Buick Envista arrives later this year, adding two new standard features previously offered as optional, namely rear park assist and the remote vehicle starter system. It also gets a new paint color called Aquamarine Blue Metallic to indirectly replace Sunrise Red Metallic and an E85-compatible engine, making it a flex-fuel capable vehicle.

The 2025 Buick Envista production is scheduled to kick off on May 6th.

  1. Local dealer finally has received one. Totally loaded Avenir, of course. Sticker $31K+. They want MSRP, naturally. Something tells me it’ll be sitting there for months when they’re overloaded with ’23 Envisions, asking price less.

  4. They may call it a crossover but it feels sedan like to me. Could appeal to a wide range of drivers because GM is axing sedans.
