The first-ever 2024 Buick Envista, debuting as the Tri-Shield brand's all-new entry-level crossover, is shown here in the range-topping Avenir trim.

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Buick Envista sales during the fourth quarter of 2023 placed the Tri-Shield brand’s new entry-level subcompact crossover 15th out of 23 nameplates when ranked by sales volume, up two spots from last quarter, its first-ever sales quarter on sale. The Subaru Crosstrek maintained the top spot with a 12 percent bump in sales to 44,561 units. The Chevy Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales), the Envista’s VSS-F platform mate, stayed in second place with an 836 percent leap to 44,127 units, continuing to nip at the heels of first place, this time within just 434 deliveries. The Honda HR-V followed in third with a 54 percent jump to 35,172 units. The Jeep Compass moved up several spots to fourth with a 28 percent uptick to 24,613 units, while the Hyundai Kona saw a 24 percent uptick to 22,598 units, placing fifth. The Toyota Corolla Cross took sixth with a 15 percent increase in sales to 21,950 units. However, the Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales), the Trax’s corporate cousin and Chevy’s second segment entry, dropped to seventh place with a two percent dip to 18,535 units. In addition to the two Chevy models, GM’s Buick currently fields three entries. The Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), the Trailblazer’s platform mate, placed 11th with a 51 percent jump to 13,755 units. The all-new Buick Envista (see running Buick Envista sales) moved up to place 15th with 7,917 deliveries. The Envista indirectly replaces the Buick Encore (see running Buick Encore sales). The discontinued Encore fell to 21st place with a 95 percent drop to 122 units.

From a segment share standpoint, the Envista earned a two percent share. The Crosstrek and Trax each earned 13 percent segment share, with the Crosstek down a segment-worst four percentage points year-over-year and the Trax up a segment-best 11 percentage points. The HR-V maintained a 10 percent share, while the Compass and Kona each held a seven percent share, both down one percentage point. The Corolla Cross posted a six percent share, down two percentage points, and the Trailblazer earned a five percent share, down three percentage points. The two other GM models in this space fared as follows:

  • Encore GX maintained a four percent share
  • (The discontinued) Encore’s share was nil, down a percentage point

The five GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer along with the Buick Envista, Encore, and Encore GX, accounted for a cumulative 84,456 deliveries. That was good for a 24 percent segment share, commanding nearly a quarter of all sales in this space and enough to solidly put The General in first place, with the Trax alone nearly earning the number one spot.

Out of the 11 manufacturers represented here, four field multiple models in this space of 23 entries, though three of those models have been discontinued and will eventually fall off this list. When combining the sales volume of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in this order:

  • GM – 24 percent share, five models (the Buick Encore has been discontinued, joined now by its indirect replacement, the first-ever Buick Envista)
  • Hyundai-Kia
    • 18 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
    • 15 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
  • Subaru – 13 percent share, one model
  • Stellantis – 11 percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued while the all-new Dodge Hornet joins the segment)
  • Honda – 10 percent share, one model
  • Toyota – six percent share, two models
  • Mazda – five percent share, one model
  • Nissan – five percent share, one model
  • VW – five percent share, one model
  • Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model
  • Ford – zero percent share, one discontinued model

While fielding multiple entires in a segment seems to result in higher deliveries for a manufacturer, that doesn’t prevent those with a single model – like Subaru and Honda – from holding their own.

Regardless, GM commanded first place, solidly ahead of Hyundai-Kia this quarter.

Overall, the mainstream subcompact crossover segment grew a healthy 41 percent to 338,094 units during Q4 2023.

The GM Authority Take

Sales of the Buick Envista during its second quarter on sale were over three times as high as those of the Encore a year ago, the discontinued model it indirectly replaces. As expected, Envista sales continued a very healthy growth trajectory that shows GM has another winner on its hands, much like the ever-popular Chevy Trax, with which the Envista shares a platform and architecture, while delivering a completely different exterior design plus a softer ride. An attractive and competitive model, the Tri-Shield brand’s new entry-level crossover brings a coupe body style to the masses – one that has heretofore been limited to costly high-end models from Europe.

About Buick Envista

In April, GM debuted the first-ever 2024 Buick Envista for the U.S. market as the Tri-Shield brand’s all-new entry-level crossover. As GM’s first crossover coupe, the Buick Envista incorporates the marque’s latest design language originally introduced by the Buick Wildcat EV concept. Highlights include a long wheelbase, a crossover coupe roofline, and a sleek profile. LED checkmark lamps are placed high in the fascia.

Three distinct trim levels are offered on the 2024 Envista – Preferred, Sport Touring, and range-topping Avenir. ST trim levels are equipped with all-black 18-inch wheels as standard, with 19-inch wheels optional. Meanwhile, the Avenir trim level features Pearl Nickel 19-inch wheels as standard.

Additionally, the Envista features more legroom than in any small Buick crossover model before it. The cabin incorporates 19 diagonal inches of combined LCD screens, including an 11-inch diagonal infotainment screen and an eight-inch digital gauge cluster. Avenir and ST logos are embroidered in the headrests, while a flat-bottom steering wheel is standard across the range. However, the Buick Envista doesn’t offer a premium/up-level sound system such as one from Bose.

GM claims that the Buick Envista offers the driving dynamics of a sedan, which we experienced first-hand a few months ago. Check out our first drive impressions in the video below:

The all-new Envista is motivated by the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine, which is rated at 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. Output is routed through the GM six-speed automatic transmission, driving the front wheels exclusively – like the Trax.

The Buick Driver Confidence Package is included as standard, adding in Automatic Emergency BrakingLane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and IntelliBeam high-beam headlights.

  2. Haven’t seen 1 ad for it. Buick likes to sell cars no one has heard of. Regal Tour X, etc.

    1. Too many people betting on Teslas “let word of mouth do the advertising.” While there could be some merit to that working, the problem is Tesla was a hot product at the time and Buick isn’t if people are expected to wait to see one Envista and ask what it is they will only gradually increase sales. I am now getting bombarded with ads for Lucid because word of mouth isn’t working for them. But then again, who has 6 digits to shell out on an EV?

      1. These discount cars are great for volume, but Trax took 20% of more expensive Trailblazer sales and Envista may do the same to Encore GX.
Subaru can achieve 13% with one model while GM needs 5 for 25%

  4. We recently visited a local (Tampa) Buick dealership to look at the Envista. There were 5 or 6 on the lot. We spent at least 20 minutes checking these out and we were surprised at the sporty look of these little crossovers. Plenty of room inside and a comfortable, higher position for the driver. We are coming out of a Honda HR-V and the Envista has a noticably better feel of the seating and dashboard materials.

What we didn’t like was the fact that we were on the lot for almost 30 minutes, looking at the Envista we found unlocked, the others next to it and a few used vehicles as well. Not one dealership person ever came out to greet us. At least four people connected to the dealership looked our way, but none approached us.

This put us off immediately and although we are truly interested in trading vehicles and the Envista is high on our “wish list”, we will have to seek out a different dealership. We base this on the fact that on every other visit to a competing dealership, we are accustomed to being nearly mauled by sales persons eager to make an impression.

Our search will continue. More later…
