The midsize mainstream pickup truck segment fell 29 percent to 97,321 units in Q4 2023, meaning sales of GM models on a combined basis underperformed the segment average.

Looking Ahead

The 40 percent drop in Chevy Colorado sales during the fourth quarter of 2023 nearly matched its experience during the first quarter of 2023, when the all-new, next-generation model began rolling out. So, while a generational changeover impacted sales at the beginning of the year, the UAW strike at the GM Wentzville plant took its toll on sales during the last quarter of the year. As a result of the strike, Colorado and Canyon inventory was down to just 29 days supply in September.

It’s worth noting that Colorado sales made their strongest gain ever against the Tacoma during the third quarter, and the Colorado had its best retail sales month since 2020 last June. This time around, however, the whole segment was down, closing out the year in the red across the board. It would appear that fewer customers bought a new midsize truck for Christmas.

GMC Canyon sales moved up a spot from the previous quarter in the midsize mainstream pickup truck segment during the fourth quarter of 2023, placing ahead of the all-new 2024 Ford Ranger as The Blue Oval’s next-generation truck goes through a generational changeover.

After that, the refreshed 2024 Jeep Gladiator will arrive early this year, while the all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma, already the undisputed sales leader in the segment, just arrived to continue challenging all contenders, including GM’s two midsize trucks.

About Chevrolet Colorado

Last May, GM unveiled the all-new 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, the highly capable off-road midsize pickup truck developed in partnership with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). For 2024, the ZR2 Bison is offered as a standalone trim level rather than as a package. In addition to a wealth of standard components from AEV, the 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison also incorporates development input from off-road racing champion Chad Hall and was refined on the Rubicon Trail to boot, adding new features like front and rear jounce control dampers.

The 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, incidentally, gets a standard bed-mounted spare, a new launch control feature, and a new Recovery Package. Its arrival means the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss Special Edition package will not return for the 2024 model year, indirectly replaced by the Bison.

Furthermore, among the many changes and updates for the new model year, the 2024 Chevy Colorado drops the 8-inch driver information center, replaced by the 11-inch DIC across the lineup, and drops the mid-level Turbo Plus engine, adopting the GM’s new TurboMax engine branding as part of changes and updates for the 2024 model year. That means the 2024 Colorado will offer just the base L2R engine on WT and LT trim levels and the High Output L3B TurboMax engine on all other trims while optional on the WT and LT. On a related note, here are the towing capacities of the 2024 Colorado.

The 2024 Colorado also offers a new Sports Bar Package and a new Off-Road Lighting Package.

Check out everything that’s new and different for the 2024 Chevy Colorado.

In fact, the current fastest-turning trim level for the third-generation Colorado is the range-topping ZR2.

Edmunds picked the 2024 Chevy Colorado for its “Top-Rated 2024” Truck category, saying it is “one of the best pickup trucks currently on sale.”

About GMC Canyon

The first-ever 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition debuted this past summer, offering a next-level off-roader complete with tons of trail-ready upgrades over the standard 2023 Canyon AT4X, framed as “the most advanced and capable Canyon ever.” Furthermore, the 2024 Canyon AT4X and AT4X AEV Edition will both get a new launch control feature as part of their Baja Mode, improving performance both on-road and off-road.

Additionally, the 2024 Canyon gets GM’s TurboMax engine branding as the name, from now on, of the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine in the High-Output tune. That is the sole powertrain offered on all 2023 and 2024 Canyon trims.

Check out all the changes and updates to the 2024 GMC Canyon.

  1. Gee I thought everybody hated Ev’s and loved trucks.

    1. I can only assume a troll. The article is about a “truck” as it is about a midsized vehicle not selling. If you want to get serious many companies dropping EVs because sales are non existent. Meaning the article sales numbers still beats all of gms EVs. Ford dropping 3 EV models after only hundreds of sales. The electric mustang is one.

Problem with sales is inflation, interest rates, harder to get a loan and add in upside down for those who paid the huge mark ups. But Google shows that and of course people look that up and critically think before regurgitating what the media puts out

  2. Kind of difficult to sell them when you don’t have any sitting on the dealers lots. Seems like all of the manufacturers are playing the same game. Limit the supply to keep the prices higher.

  4. Only available in one motor, Engine block problems, a great 8 spd transmission history that gm won’t back with an extended warranty, denting roof, lousy fuel mileage, baby bed, only available in 4 door. I could go on.

    1. That one engine choice in multiple power output ratings is how GM forces people into buying the more profitable 1/2 ton Silverado and Sierra. Either that, or customers will go find a truck from another manufacturer. What genius at GM thinks offering only 1 (unproven) engine choice will help sell vehicles of ANY type for them? Whoever it is needs to be let go… and replaced with someone that actually likes selling cars!

      1. @Ken & Paulie

Let’s go through your points one by one shall we?

One motor, it is in 3 states of tunes are more powerful than most the competition with a ton of torque which is what you want in a truck. So really, it is 3 engine power options…

Engine block problems? That was in 14 trucks, a comically low amount that shows trolls from other brans will hand on to anything.

The 8speed is actually a great transmission, it just had the wrong fluid in it for a few years. Once that was changed it was well reviewed. Most of the problems came from the fluid, after that is was mostly neglect by not having the fluid changed, that would cause the torque converter issues and eventually transmission failure. Can’t put it all on the manufacturer when they identify the problem and address it but others neglect it…

        Denting roof has been addressed.

Lousy fuel mileage, not seeing that. Many are getting higher than advertised.

Baby bed, yes, the lack of a larger bed is why I wouldn’t consider it.

4 door, that is what I would get but some others say otherwise, especially fleets or businesses. But in the end they didn’t sell and why most all others are doing the same, it isn’t a GM only decision…

Paulie, unproven? it has been in the full size trucks for 5 years with barely any noise on issues, it is one of the most hard to kill engines in their durability testing. Sounds like you have done zero homework when spouting off your argument.

  5. Vehicles are just getting too expensive. All the midsize trucks are down. It seems people are finally realizing paying 50-60k for a midsize truck isn’t worth it.

    1. To expensive, questionable interior colors, buzzy 4-cylinder with terrible mpg in zr2 trim, and silly packages made me walk away. I was ready to buy one myself. Not for $56k.

      1. It is a lifted, big tire, heavy trim with no aero in front, what do you expect? They probably do it so the suburban dads buying it can’t justify it with their commute. It is silly buying a truck like that and never having a use for it just to look cool at the local starbucks. If you are complaining about mpg, this truck isn’t for you. Tired of these trucks being image purchases. The amount of people that have any use for a front locker on these things can be counted on two hands, I don’t think people realize how hairy of a situation that have to be in to need to make use of that feature, but instead it is a conversation piece at their kids soccer games. Sad days we live in…

  6. Since the release of the new midsized trucks, and Ford too, I never understood the draw. Price wise seems to save about 2-5k over fullsize. I personally buy full size for that reason

    1. Not sure we’re your shopping but in canada a well equipped mid sized pick up is around 60K. Full sized well equipped is 80k+

    2. 2-5k? It is about 20% price difference. The Colorado ZR2 starts at 48k, the Silverado ZR2 starts at 71k, what hillbilly math are you doing? BTW, the ZR2 price difference is 30% or 23k…
