GM China Sales Down 14 Percent During The Third Quarter Of 2023

GM China sales decreased 14 percent to 541,830 units during the third quarter 2023. Sales decreased at Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and Wuling brands.

SAIC-GM Sales – Q3 2023

Third-quarter 2023 sales at SAIC-GM – GM’s primary joint venture in China responsible for Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac operations – decreased 17.2 percent to 246,130 units:

Buick sales decreased 18.4 percent to 151,050 units

  • Buick GL8 remained the leader of the MPV segment, with sales increasing 9.7 percent to nearly 40,000 units
  • The cumulative sales of the brand’s first models to use Ultium battery technology – the all-new Buick Electra E5 and Electra E4 – reached 20,000 units following their launch in the second quarter

Chevrolet sales decreased 20.3 percent to 45,050 units

  • The Chevy Monza remained the brand’s best-selling nameplate, as sales increased 15 percent to over 35,000 units

Cadillac sales decreased 10.7 percent to 50,030 units

  • The Cadillac CT5 luxury sedan maintained its position as the brand’s best-selling model, as sales surpassed 18,000 units
  • Cadillac Lyriq is gradually growing in popularity in the Chinese market

SAIC-GM-Wuling Sales – Q3 2023

Third quarter 2023 sales at SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) – GM’s other Chinese joint venture responsible for Wuling and Baojun brands – decreased 11.0 percent to 295,700 units:

Wuling sales decreased 8.08 percent to 295,700 units

  • For the first time in 2023, GM published total sales results for the Baojun brand, totalling 11,800 units
    • GM did not disclose the year-to-date total
  • The Wuling Bingo EV had record sales of over 47,000 units during the quarter
  • The new Baojun Yun Duo was oficially introduced in August to further expand the joint venture’s EV portfolio
  • All-new Wuling Xing Yun hybrid was launched in September as the brand continues to strengthen its foothold in the passenger vehicle segment

During the first nine months of the 2023 calendar year, GM China sales decreased 11.4 percent to 1,530,130 units.

  1. Western and Japanese OEMs continue to lose significant market share in China – GM will sell about 2M cars in China this year, down from over 4M in 2017. For the first time in about a decade, GM’s largest market will be the US with YTD sales of 1,969,522 vs 1,530,130 sales in China so far.

    1. Given the geo political trajectory, there’s a very realistic chance that many if not all non-Chinese automakers will be forced to sell their stakes and exit the country in the not too distant future.

      In the meantime, they’ll continue to lose share.

      1. That’s almost a certainty – China got what they needed from western OEMs – they don’t need/want them any more.

  2. No electric, get lost.
    I guess 2023-09 has seen nearly 37% plugin sales, thats 3/8. And the # keeps increasing.
