Buick Encore GX sales during the first quarter of 2024 kept the small premium crossover in 11th place from the previous quarter in a crowded segment of now 21 entries when ranked by sales volume.
The Subaru Crosstrek maintained the top spot with an eight percent dip in sales to 38,405 units. The Honda HR-V moved up a spot to second place with a 44 percent bump to 38,062 units. The Chevy Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales) slipped a spot to third with a 481 percent leap to 37,588 units and within just 474 deliveries of second. The Buick Encore (see running Buick Encore sales), with the discontinued model being indirectly replaced by the Envista, finished last with a 98 percent drop to 55 units.

The Encore GX maintained a four percent market share in its segment. The Crosstrek, HR-V, and Trax each posted an 11 percent segment share, with the Crosstrek down four percentage points year-over-year, the HR-V up a point, and the Trax up nine points. The CX-30 and Compass both held an eight percent share, with the CX-30 up a point and the Compass maintaining its share. The Trailblazer earned a seven percent share, down three percentage points. The two other GM models in this space fared as follows:
- Envista earned a three percent share
- Encore’s share was nil, down a percentage point
The five GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer, along with the Buick Envista, Encore, and Encore GX, accounted for a cumulative 84,877 deliveries. When you combine Buick Encore GX sales with its GM siblings in this segment, it’s good for a 25 percent segment share, commanding a quarter of all sales in this space and enough to solidly keep The General in first place overall.

Meanwhile, Hyundai – with the Kona and Venue – and Kia – with the Seltos, Niro, and Soul – saw a cumulative 63,696 deliveries, good for a combined 19 percent segment share, placing the Korean conglomerate behind GM in second place overall.

Out of the 10 manufacturers represented here, three field multiple models in this space of now 21 entries, though one of those models has been discontinued and will eventually fall off this list. When combining the sales volume of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in this order:
- GM – 25 percent share, five models (the Buick Encore has been discontinued, joined now by its indirect replacement, the first-ever Buick Envista)
- Hyundai Motor Group
- 19 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
- 15 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
- Stellantis – 12 percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued while the all-new Dodge Hornet joins the segment)
- Subaru – 11 percent share, one model
- Honda – 11 percent share, one model
- Mazda – eight percent share, one model
- Toyota – six percent share, one model
- Nissan – four percent share, one model
- VW – three percent share, one model
- Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model
Lately, it seems that automakers fielding multiple entries in this segment enjoy better sales and higher deliveries, but those with a single model, including Subaru and Honda, seem to hold their own comparatively.
GM commanded first place again ahead of Hyundai Motor Group (which includes Kia) this quarter.
Overall, sales of mainstream subcompact crossovers grew 24 percent to 343,607 units during Q1 2024, meaning the Encore GX underperformed the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
While Buick Encore GX sales last time around outperformed the already healthy growth of its segment, it underperformed this quarter, though still positive. Time will tell if the fully-refreshed 2024 Encore GX is a hit with buyers going forward as demand cools a bit. However, combining Buick Encore GX sales with the other two Buick models in this class and the two Chevy models keeps the automaker at the top, this time a full six segment share percentage points ahead of the Hyundai-Kia conglomerate fielding as many models.
Last quarter’s sales results keep GM in command of the space for nearly a quarter of all sales. We still expect Buick Encore GX sales to continue to grow in subsequent quarters as allowed by supply and production volume.
This past November, Buick ranked first in the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Sales Satisfaction Index for the second year in a row. However, a month later, Buick ranked average in the Consumer Reports 2024 Reliability Report, though it still placed above the average dependability of U.S. automakers.
In March, Buick topped the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Customer Service Index (CSI) study.
Most recently, Buick was among the brands with the lowest ownership costs, according to Consumer Reports.

That was so amazing.
That Trax is just +/- 900 less than the top and less than 500 behind the Honda in #2 spot. Keep it going and the Chevy Trax will be #1 without the help of the Trailblazer/Encore GX and Envista.
What amazes me is how many of the CX30’s that Mazda is able to turn. I challenge anyone to get in one of those and then go drive the Trax or Encore GX. If you still buy the Mazda, then you need help. Open and close the door on the Mazda’s compared to the Chevy. Sit in the Mazda where you feel like you are in a hole with the dash and door panels closing in on you. There’s a lot about the Mazda to dislike.
It’s 11th in the 21 vehicle segment. If it was 18th, your title would list the three models it outperformed. You do this all the time.
How in the hell does Jeep continue to sell so many Compasses. I drove one and it genuinely made my day worse. I don’t know how anyone could live with one, let alone drop $30k on a brand new one
Compasses have been sold with 10-15% off MSRP. That’s how.
We just bought one 2024 ST and I’m not 100% impressed, we checked all the options and it’s still missing simple things.
-The climate controls are terrible, zero readout from the knob and the screen doesn’t tell you anything
-we don’t have rain sensing wipers
-Passenger seat doesn’t have power anything
It feels simple inside like it’s getting sold towards a 60+year old and they removed things because Grandma might break the tv.
This is a $38k CDN car and missing those few things makes me question Buick. Already looking about switching the climate controls with the Avenir trim
