Like most mid-cycle refreshes, the 2024 Buick Encore GX is set to introduce a suite of updates to the exterior styling, technology features, and trim lineup. However, the premium crossover is actually losing a notable option for the refresh, the head-up display feature.
GM Authority has learned that the 2024 Encore GX will no longer be available with the head-up display feature (RPO code UV7). This is because the Tri-Shield crossover gains what Buick calls its Virtual Cockpit System – which features an eight-inch digital instrument cluster and an 11-inch infotainment system touchscreen – as standard fare on all trim levels.
Previously, the head-up display feature was only available for the 2023 Encore GX, and was included in the Advanced Technology Package (RPO code WPA) on Select and Essence trim levels for an extra $1,935. Notably, the WPA package required choosing the $595 hands-free power liftgate (RPO code Y6L) option as well.
In case you missed it, General Motors officially revealed the revised 2024 Buick Encore GX in February 2023 after months of leaked photos from China. On the exterior, the styling has been revised and draws inspiration from the Buick Wildcat EV concept vehicle and the upcoming fully electric Buick Electra E5 crossover. It’s worth noting that the 2024 Encore GX will be Buick’s first North American vehicle that features the new Tri-Shield logo design.
Highlighting the 2024 Encore GX is the introduction of the range-topping Avenir trim level. This new-for-Encore GX trim features several unique exterior accents and interior materials, and is chalked full of technology and active safety features.
In regard to tech, the refreshed Encore GX receives a suite of new safety features, including Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, IntelliBeam auto high beams, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, and Adaptive Cruise Control. Additionally, the Virtual Cockpit System will be equipped as standard.
As for powertrain options, specifications largely carry over from the 2023 model. This includes the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine, rated at 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, and the available turbocharged 1.3L I3 L3T gasoline engine, rated at 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque.
A front-wheel drivetrain is standard and pairs with a continuously variable automatic transmission, while AWD is optional and pairs with the GM nine-speed automatic.
Under the skin, the 2024 Encore GX rides on the GM VSS-F vehicle set. Production start will begin shortly, kicking off in March 2023 at the GM Bupyeong plant in South Korea.

Another indication of the “good enough” mentality at GM. Other automakers have figured out how to have a digital display and HUD.
Agree Brad. More automakers are adding HUD in more common lower-cost vehicles (verses luxury or higher end vehicles) even with digital displays clusters. I have gotten used to HUD over the years and in our current family vehicles, my steering wheel position blocks the speed and would not want a vehicle without it. Even my 75 year old parents just recently purchased their first vehicle is a HUD and they both love it so they don’t need to take their eyes off the road. Just look at the Acadia, HUD was offered on the 1st gen, but not initially on the 2nd gen. Dealers mentioned many customer were not happy and moved away from GM vehicles and with a competitor. Low and behold, the 2nd gen mid-cycle refresh included the HUD again. The younger “technology driven” generation actually look for HUD and newer displays. While I am not here to say or discuss that the Nissan Rogue is a better vehicle than the Equinox, I know several younger former “GM only” owners whose primary reason for switching brands was HUD availability. Also know a few who have had all the previous gen Equinox’s that moved the the 2022 GMC Terrain because it offer the HUD.
Laughing.. It means look out your front window side mirrors and rear view mirror.
It’s the one option I never liked! Good riddance.
IMO I have never owned a car with HUD and I don’t feel that I will ever need it! What ever happened to knowing your vehicle so well that you can tell what speed it’s going without looking at the gauges!? I am not saying that GM should have got rid of HUD as an option but it was an expensive option perhaps if it was cheaper more people would buy it and thus it would remain an option. That’s usually what happens with options on cars of EVERY auto maker… If an option does not sell very well it gets the boot!! Nice looking Encore GX to.
A Classic case of packaging the HUD with a bunch of high end expensive options that raise the price of availability. Thus people don’t pay for the package, then when marketing looks only at the HUD (UV7) sales, they think it is a low runner and stupidly cancel it!
The HUD option itself is relatively inexpensive, considering the bang for the buck and for promoting safety every second behind the wheel!
Make the HUD a free-flow option or offer it as standard, you’ll sell more cars GM!
Keep you head up… Agree but you’ll have to file a petition to almost every car company out there as the bean counters probably won’t ever offer it as standard. My options list that should be standard on every Buick would be: Land departure warning, park assist, emergency braking, hill climb assist, power everything there is no need for roll up windows and manual mirrors in this day and age, both front seats powered and heated and cooled, leather interior, automatic high beam lights, rear backup camera with sensors, and yes HUD should be standard on the encore GX as well as on every Buick and Cadillac… Your paying enough for these cars already it’s sad that you have to buy top of the line packages to get some of these features! It’s called corporate greed!
Chevy Man:
I agree Land Departure Warning would be a valuable feature 🙂
The Encore opted for the “Combiner” version of the Head-Up Display, which I think lacks the more professional integration of a windshield based HUD. Maybe they didn’t plan ahead enough to package a real HUD and they were told that the combiner HUD was lower cost than the windshield type. So maybe it’s not the technology they cancelled. It was the type of HUD they chose.
I had the HUD on my BUICK ENCORE GX, and after a brief time with it, I turned it off completely. I like the HUD projected onto the window, but I certainly do not like the pop-up plastic one.
My car was damaged and is in the shop for 2 weeks. I have a rental -. I own a 2018 Ford escape and a 2023 Vette both with the MPH among other things in the HUD . The rental does not have the option. After a few days with the rental I will say ” I WILL NOT OWN A CAR WITHOUT THE SPEED DISPLAYED IN THE WINDSHIELD.” period paragraph. End of discussion
