This is the refreshed 2024 Buick Encore GX, featuring fresh styling and an updated interior, shown here in the new standalone Sport Touring (ST) trim, a first for the model.

Buick Encore GX sales during the fourth quarter of 2023 placed the small premium crossover in 11th in a crowded segment of currently 23 entries when ranked by sales volume, down from eighth place the previous quarter.

The Subaru Crosstrek stayed at the top, with a 12 percent increase in sales to 44,561 units. The Chevy Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales) took second place in striking distance of the Crosstrek with an 836 percent leap to 44,127 units. The Honda HR-V followed in third with a 54 percent jump to 35,172 units. The Jeep Compass took fourth with a 28 percent bump to 24,613 units, while the Hyundai Kona saw a 24 percent uptick in sales to 22,598 units, placing fifth. The Toyota Corolla Cross took sixth with a 15 percent swell to 21,950 units. The Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales), the Trax’s corporate cousin and the second segment entry from the Bow Tie brand, followed in seventh place with a two percent dip to 18,535 units. In addition to the two Chevy models, Buick currently fields three entries. The Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), the Trailblazer’s platform mate, placed 11th with a 52 percent jump to 13,755 units. The Buick Envista (see running Buick Envista sales), the Trax’s platform mate, took 15th place with 7,917 deliveries. The Envista indirectly replaced the Buick Encore (see running Buick Encore sales), which fell to 21st place with a 95 percent drop to 122 units as a discontinued model.

The Buick Encore GX maintained a four percent market share in its segment. The Crosstrek posted a 13 percent segment share, down a segment-worst four percentage points year-over-year. The Trax earned a 13 percent share but up a segment-best 11 percentage points. The HR-V maintained a 10 percent share, while the Compass and Kona each held a seven percent share, both down one percentage point, and the Corolla Cross posted a six percent share, down two percentage points. The Trailblazer earned a five percent market share, down three percentage points. The Envista posted a two percent share, and, not surprisingly, the discontinued Buick Encore’s share was less than one percent, down a percentage point.

The five GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer, along with the Buick Envista, Encore, and Encore GX, accounted for a combined 84,456 deliveries. That was good for a 24 percent segment share to account for nearly a quarter of all sales in this space, solidly placing The General in first, while the Trax alone almost took the top spot.

Despite Kia calling the Soul an SUV, an argument can be made that it is not part of the segment in question but instead competes for one segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia entries total nets 47,947 deliveries for a combined 15 percent segment share.

Out of the 11 manufacturers represented here, four field multiple models in this space of 23 entries. However, three of those models have been discontinued and will eventually fall off this list. When combining the sales volume of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in this order:

  • GM – 24 percent share, five models (the Buick Encore has been discontinued, joined now by its indirect replacement, the first-ever Buick Envista)
  • Hyundai Motor Group
    • 18 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
    • 15 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
  • Subaru – 13 percent share, one model
  • Stellantis – 11 percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued while the all-new Dodge Hornet joins the segment)
  • Honda – 10 percent share, one model
  • Toyota – six percent share, two models
  • Mazda – five percent share, one model
  • Nissan – five percent share, one model
  • VW – five percent share, one model
  • Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model
  • Ford – zero percent share, one discontinued model

While fielding multiple entries in a segment seems to result in higher quantities of deliveries for a manufacturer, brands with a single model – like Subaru and Honda – can still hold their own. Regardless, GM commanded first place, solidly ahead of Hyundai-Kia this quarter.

Overall, mainstream subcompact crossovers grew 41 percent to 338,094 units during Q4 2023, meaning Buick Encore GX sales outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Buick Encore GX sales outperformed the already healthy growth of its segment. Perhaps the fully-refreshed 2024 Encore GX is a hit with buyers after all, as we anticipated. Better yet, combining Buick Encore GX sales with the other two Buick models in this class and the two Chevy models keeps GM in command of the space for nearly a quarter of all sales. We still expect Buick Encore GX sales to continue to grow in subsequent quarters as allowed by supply and production volume.

Overall, Buick’s inventory supply was at 82 days in September and increased significantly in October to 107 days, while it rose even higher in November to 121 days. Buick dealer inventory remained high in December, at 106 days of supply, far above the industry average of 70 days. A 60-day supply mark is considered optimal across the automotive industry.

Even better news is that the Encore GX average transaction price (ATP) was down slightly in Q4 2023, which should help boost Buick Encore GX sales in the future.

This past November, Buick ranked first in the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Sales Satisfaction Index for the second year in a row. However, a month later, Buick ranked average in the Consumer Reports 2024 Reliability Report, though it still placed above the average dependability of U.S. automakers.

Most recently, Buick topped the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Customer Service Index (CSI) study.
