When purchasing a new vehicle, buyers may not consider ownership expenses beyond the initial purchase price. However, as a vehicle ages, its maintenance costs add up over time – some brands more than others, especially as warranties expire and wear and tear stacks up. Thankfully, Buick has been recognized as having one of the lowest overall vehicle maintenance costs, making it a good choice for buyers in the market for affordable – and luxurious – vehicles in 2024.
The latest data from Consumer Reports put Buick right at the top of the list for lowest overall maintenance costs over 10 years of ownership. The study includes a breakdown of costs between one to five years and six to 10 years. Overall, the cost of maintenance for a Buick vehicle clocked in at $4,900 over the course of a decade, including $900 on average through the first five years and $4,000 through the next five. That figure is up slightly from 2023, during which Buick also landed a spot near the top of the list, with an average of $3,355 over a 10-year time period.
The only brand less expensive than Buick was Tesla, with a total cost of $4,035, broken down into $580 through the first five years and $3,455 in the last five. Toyota ranked third, matching Buick’s $4,900 average, while Lincoln ranked fourth at $5,040. Ford vehicles typically cost $5,400 over 10 years, barely outperforming Chevy, which averaged $5,550.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the brands with the highest 10-year ownership costs were foreign automakers, including Mercedes-Benz ($10,525), Porsche ($14,090) and Land Rover ($19,250).
“If you are considering a luxury model, it may be wise to purchase one from a domestic brand that may have lower maintenance and repair costs,” said Steven Elek, Consumer Reports‘ program leader for auto data analytics. “For example, over 10 years, Mercedes-Benz models are more than double the cost to maintain and repair as those from Lincoln.”

I sincerely hope GM will build a marketing campaign around this news. My 2014 Buick Regal fits right into this information. Ten years old with only oil changes every 5,000 miles, a new set of tires around 60,000 miles and a new set of wiper blades at 80,000 miles; that’s it.
My 2014 Impala Limited turns 10 in 10 days. Oil changes and 9 tires, that’s it now at 82k miles. My previous vehicle, 2007 GP a bunch of tires, a can of steering fluid and 2 break pads and 105k miles before I traded it for my Impala.
Just found out this week that there is no Buick franchise in our metro area of a half a million people! We have to drive thirty miles to another state to get our Buicks serviced by a dealer! What in the world is GM thinking anyway? Two dealers gone in two months. I’ve had 14 Buicks in fifty years. I guess the GMC dealers will service our cars…
Have to ask the dealerships… GM isn’t in control over them.
No, this IS General Motors’ problem. They are turning Buick EV. GM bought out half the Buick dealers, who all refused to go along with this program, the idiotic fantasy EV world no one wants.
LOL no one wants? How wrong that is.
Not wrong at all. The EV has reached all who will buy them. Next group of buyers are waiting for even more handouts from the government to convince them to buy.
If you disagree- why do you think half the Buick dealerships preferred to be bought out rather than become a Buick EV dealership.
87000 for a cargo van that can go 150 miles? Pickups that cannot tow. Cars that have battery replacement costs so high it is cheaper to write off the car than replace the damaged battery.
Nice Walt. Now feel free to list the massive number of accomplishments that the EV’s have had and the constantly increasing sales numbers.
I like how you pick a couple of specific negative examples to justify your stance. I could easily counter each thing you listed, but why? I can tell that there’s nothing that will change your way of looking at it and your desire to bash what you probably know little about. It would be like arguing with a drunk. You just don’t do it because you never get anywhere with them.
Comforting news. I just purchased a 2023 Buick Envision Avenir, and it is the most beautiful vehicle I have ever owned, with one exception; my 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora was one gorgeous, fantastic car. If you’re one who enjoys luxury, comfort and knockout looks, the Envision is a great choice.
GM needs to understand the quality is due to two things. First is the people in the factories that build the vehicles. If they are happy their work is much higher quality. The other thing is the materials used in the manufacturing. Quality materials and pride in the product is what makes a vehicle stand out. Of course a good design can raise the standards.
Congrats to Buick and this is great news. Like MNSteve said above, GM and Buick MUST stand on the rooftops and promote this as loudly as they can.
It isn’t really a surprise or new for Buick however. I started selling them back in 1988 and we had the Buick with Cadillac, GMC and Honda. Of the 4 brands, the Buick was always the cheapest to own over the 10 years and 100,000 to 120,000 miles. Back then on the Honda’s, you had to (in order to keep the warranty in tact) do a manual valve adjustment every 15,000 miles. That would really add to the cost of ownership and if you skipped them, your chances of timing belt issues was huge AND Honda would void your warranty.
Go Buick Go. But please for the love of gawd, please give us a couple sedans again. Go ahead and keep your SUV’s, but have some diversity please.
Agreed on the sedans. I have a 2018 LaCrosse that is the best sedan I’ve owned. No issues just regular maintenance and a new set of tires. If Buick still sells the LaCrosse in China, why not the US? I like sedans and will probably be forced to buy a non domestic sedan when replacement time comes.
Old people don’t drive much.
I have had no issues with my ’17 LaCrosse. Also, I’m not old. LOL
Yes, make more sedans, I own a2018 LaCrosse excellent vehicle.
I have a 17 Regal with 75K. Best vehicle I’ve had. Very little maintenance. I was appalled to hear Regal no longer available in US, but is in China. Bring Regal back to US.
Bring Buick Sedans and Tour X back to America. Read, GM comments above!
