Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Buick Encore GX sales during the second quarter of 2023 placed the premium marque’s entry above mid-pack in a crowded segment of 21 entries when ranked by sales volume. The Subaru Crosstrek remained at the top spot from last quarter, which is when we added this model to the segment. It posted a 36 percent increase in sales to 34,568 units. The Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales), the Encore GX’s platform mate and corporate cousin, kept second place with a solid 112 percent jump to 33,857 units, within just over 700 deliveries of first place. The Jeep Compass moved up to third with a 28 percent bump to 28,083 units, while the Honda HR-V slipped to fourth with an 11 percent slide to 27,406 units. The Chevy Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales), Chevrolet’s second entry in this segment, moved up ten spots to fifth with a segment-best 115 percent jump to 20,921 units. The rest of the crowded field had less than 20K deliveries each. That includes the Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), which moved up to ninth place with a 99 percent jump in sales to 18,055 units. Meanwhile, the discontinued Buick Encore (see running Buick Encore sales), the Trax’s platform mate and the second entry from Buick, remained in 18th place with a 59 percent drop to 2,085 units.

From a segment share standpoint, the Encore GX posted a six percent share, up two percentage points year-over-year. The Crosstrek led with an 11 percent segment share, up one percentage point. The Trailblazer also posted an 11 percent share, up a segment-best five percentage points. The Compass maintained a nine percent share, while the HR-V also earned a nine percent share, down a segment-worst three percentage points. The Trax earned a seven percent segment share, up three percentage points, while the Encore held a one percent share, down one percentage point.

The four GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Buick Encore and Encore GX, along with the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer, accounted for a cumulative 74,918 deliveries. That’s good for a 25 percent segment share, commanding a quarter of all sales in this space and enough to launch The General to the top.

However, a strong argument can be made that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question, and that it instead competes one segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia total nets 54,488 deliveries for a combined 17 percent segment share.

Out of the 11 manufacturers represented here, four field multiple models in this space of 21 entries. When combining the sales volume of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in this order:

  • GM – 25 percent share, four models (one model – Buick Encore – discontinued, indirectly replaced by an upcoming one – Buick Envista)
  • Hyundai-Kia
    • 23 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
    • 17 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
  • Subaru – 11 percent share, one model
  • Stellantis – 11 percent share, three models
  • Honda – nine percent share, one model
  • Mazda – six percent share, one model
  • Nissan – six percent share, one model
  • Toyota – four percent share, two models
  • VW – four percent share, one model
  • Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model
  • Ford – zero percent share, one model (now discontinued)

Generally speaking, fielding multiple entires in a segment seems to result in higher quantities of deliveries for a manufacturer, that doesn’t prevent those with a single model – like Subaru and Honda – from performing well. As such, this seems to be a game of commanding more “shelf space” as opposed to cannibalizing sales. Nevertheless, GM took first place this quarter, edging out Hyundai-Kia.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment grew a healthy 25 percent to 311,326 units during Q2 2023, meaning Encore GX sales significantly outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Buick Encore GX sales jumped during the second quarter of 2023 in a contested and crowded field that now includes 21 entries, including four GM models. We attribute that this positive performance is the result of two factors: improved availability of the model at the dealer level, and a more competitive product in the fully-refreshed 2024 Encore GX. Looking ahead, we expect sales of the Encore GX to continue in an upward trend so long as supply allows.

We should also note that the first-ever 2024 Envista is now launching and serves as an indirect replacement for the discontinued Buick Encore. The new model will show up in sales for the mainstream subcompact crossover segment next quarter.

About Encore GX

The refreshed 2024 Buick Encore GX incorporates fresh styling cues and big updates inside, while also adding the range-topping Avenir trim level, and new tech headlined by Buick’s Virtual Cockpit System.

Winged LED headlamps are standard across the range, while LED taillights are equipped higher in the range. New 18-inch and 19-inch wheel options are also on offer.

The Avenir trim level, offered for the first time ever on the Encore GX starting with the 2024 model year, offers exclusive design cues, features, and premium materials, including a unique grille, unique clear LED taillights, unique 19-inch wheels, chrome body accents, and black carbon metallic body side molding. Inside, the Encore GX Avenir features leather seating, a 10-way power driver seat, heated steering wheel, and an air ionizer system.

The refreshed 2024 Encore GX also offers a reimagined ST trim for a sportier demeanor, incorporating high-gloss black front and rear bumpers, an optional Black Roof Package, and a flat-bottom steering wheel.

The refreshed model’s Virtual Cockpit features 19 inches of screen real estate via an 11-inch infotainment screen and 8-inch configurable driver cluster screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard, while wireless phone charging is optional.

The Buick Driver Confidence package is standard, and includes many safety features plus Adaptive Cruise Control. Finally, the 2024 model-year refresh includes some mild powertrain enhancements.

Standard spec under the hood is the familiar turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine, which is rated at 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while the available turbocharged 1.3L I3 L3T gasoline engine is rated at 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional, with front-wheel-drive models equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission, and all-wheel-drive models equipped with the GM 9-speed automatic transmission.

Last July J.D. Power released results of its 2022 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), ranking major car brands and models based on consumer feedback. It listed the Buick Encore GX as the best small utility, besting the Buick Encore and Ford Bronco Sport.

  1. I’m getting tired of all the sales comparisons to 2022. Of course they’re way up and relatively meaningless. What would be far more interesting and relevant would be to use 2019.

  2. This is really good news for gm! Once they start rolling out the envista and get the Trax full steam their gonna be untouchable in this segment.

  3. So from my count, I see 21 vehicles in this crossover category. Just in this one category.

I don’t mind that they have a lot of CUV/SUV’s to offer, but this is just ridiculous at best. This world needs more cars and less boxes clogging the roads.

  4. I bought a 2023 GX this quarter to beat the ugly ’24 model. Yeah, down vote me. I want a Buick look not a shark/world look.

  5. I just checked my local dealer who has many 2024 Encore GX’s in stock. Adaptive Cruise Control is not standard as referenced in this article. On the Encore GX Avenir, it is part of the Avenir Technology Package which has many features including adaptive cruise control and is a $1395 option. On the Encore GX ST, the adaptive cruise control is part of the Advanced Technology Package and list for $1095. For that $1095, you do get the Adaptive Cruise Control, plus HD Surround Vision and Wireless Charging.
