The GM Authority Take
The steep decrease in Chevrolet Colombia sales in May exacerbates the Bow Tie brand’s struggles in the South American country, causing a fall from second to third place among the country’s best-selling brands, having been surpassed by Toyota and Renault. Despite having experienced a slower rate of decline than during other months, May’s performance represents Chevrolet’s seventh consecutive monthly contraction in the Colombian market.
The vast majority of Chevrolet models offered in Colombia suffered large double-digit declines in May, including a sharp year-over-year contraction of the best-selling Chevy Onix. The popular subcompact car reduced its sales volume by 656 units year-over-year due to a drop in inventory. We expect Onix figures to stabilize and improve in the coming months as local production of the affordable Joy variant increases at the local GM Colmotores plant.
The only Chevy models that were in the green in May were the low-volume Chevy Equinox and Tahoe. Though both nameplates saw four-digit gains, their impact to the bottom line was virtually insignificant, totaling a combined 47 deliveries. In addition, the Chevy Silverado – recently introduced in Colombia – similarly maintained a low volume.

Since fentanyl replaced cocaine and heroin as the world’s main population anesthetic, the profits for cartels just aren’t there.
