The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Argentina sales were in the red for the second month in a row in May, suffering a loss of 223 units compared to the same month a year ago. In this fashion, the Bow Tie brand expands the negative sales trend that began in April as a result of macroeconomic difficulties experienced by the South American country, impacting both the supply chain for locally-produced vehicles at the GM Alvear plant as well as imported vehicles.

As in April, the drop in Chevrolet Argentina sales during May 2023 was led by a decrease in the nationally manufactured Chevy Cruze, which suffered a significant reduction of almost 800 deliveries year-over-year. Even so, the compact car line made a significant volume recovery from the prior four months, returning to four-digit sales and recording its second-best monthly result of the 2023 calendar year after the 1,133 units recorded in January. The Chevy Onix, S10 and TrailBlazer SUV were also in the red during the month.

Meanwhile, the Chevy Tracker continued its positive performance in May with another notable triple-digit growth spurt. While the subcompact crossover lagged behind the Cruze for the second month in a row in terms of cumulative sales, it still holds the lead as the best-selling Chevy model during the first five months of the year in Argentina. In addition, the Chevy Equinox and Spin were also in the green.

  1. Because of exchange controls and lmited exports, GM Argentina is struggling to import the Onix, which is a bestseller elsewhere in Latin America.

    Volkswagen Argentina has similar problems.

Fiat is selling the locally built Cronos, and Toyota exports loads of Hilux so they can import the Yaris.
