Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Savana sales during the fourth quarter of 2023 saw it remain in last place in its class from the previous quarter when ranked by sales volume. The full-size van segment comprises passenger, cargo, and cutaway/chassis cab models. The Ford Transit (see running Ford Transit sales) kept the top spot, as it has since it launched, with sales flat this period for 28,814 deliveries. The Ram ProMaster remained in second, as it has for well over two years now, with a 13 percent uptick to 21,323 units. The Blue Oval’s second entry, the Ford E-Series (see running Ford E-Series sales), moved up to third place with a 25 percent bump to 12,455 units. Meanwhile, the Chevy Express (see running Chevy Express sales) fell to fourth with a 38 percent slide to 10,114 units, and the GMC Savana (see running GMC Savana sales) finished out this small segment with a 64 percent drop for just 2,527 deliveries.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Savana sales plummeted to close out the year, moving just 2,527 units during Q4 2023. Even combined sales of the Savana with its corporate twin, the Chevy Express, wasn’t enough to pull GM up from last place and barely ahead of just one of Ford’s vans, as both GM models significantly underperformed even an already-down sales quarter.

This shouldn’t be surprising since the Savana/Express is an old vehicle that traces its roots to the 1990s, with the duo remaining the oldest models in their segment by a wide margin. They’re even the oldest GM vehicles currently in production. Meanwhile, the field is offering substantially more modern and attractive products.

To add insult to injury, GM eliminated the turbo-diesel baby Duramax engine, which was one of the key differentiators of the automaker’s full-size van offering. With the diesel gone, there’s now not much reason for fleets or retail buyers to opt for either of the two GM twins. Class-leading towing is one of the only competitive advantages of this van. A much-needed overhaul would substantially help GM in this space, but The General may have canceled any such plans.

Worse yet, in December, The General issued a “Stop Build” order for four configurations of the 2024 Chevy Express and 2024 GMC Savana commercial cargo vans, halting production of those variants immediately.

About GMC Savana

The 2024 GMC Savana arrives with two new transmissions, which are the only changes for the Passenger Van, Cargo Van, and Cutaway configurations. While, initially, the 2024 GMC Savana cargo van dropped the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, it is now available again, joining the atmospheric 4.3L V6 LV1 gasoline engine as the only two powerplants offered on the 2024 Savana. Check out the 2024 GMC Savana towing capacities.

Additionally, 2024 GMC Savana infotainment system upgrades are no longer available, leaving the 2024 Savana with only one infotainment option: the base audio system consisting of the AM/FM stereo with an MP3 player. That system includes an auxiliary jack and two front-door speakers.

While the Savana and Express were thought to be discontinued after the 2025 model year, GM had plans to redesign the Chevy Express for the 2027 model year, keeping the ICE powertrain. However, a recent report by Autoweek indicates that The General may have canceled plans for any next-generation vans, as noted above.

Contrary to some beliefs, the Express and Savana were tested in a wind tunnel.

  1. What exactly are the production numbers coming out of wentzville? By the looks of inventory, which i check weekly id say very low. Cant sell them if you dont build them. Sad, GM needs to wake up

    1. Unfortunately under this inept management, GM is too “woke” hence the problems with the fundamental activities of building vehicles.

  2. Letting another good vehicle which people want die on the vine. Fewer options, fewer built to even meet demand & then kill it because of “low sales”. Haven’t we seen this story many times before, Regal, U.S. CT6, Impala, Camaro, etc? Hey, more production capacity for another cookie cutter SUV/CUE (if not built in China, Mexico, and S Korea or another EV to sit on dealers’ lots that few people want.

  3. i think the platform has become a case study by GM to see how long they can sell the same thing while jacking up the price.

so far 2003 for the update and the base model platform back to 1996

impressive. so can we buy a 1996 corvette too? would be cool

  4. I don’t think you can blame underperforming sales on an old platform. These vans are extremely scarce, (at least for retail buyers) they aren’t on dealer lots and orders aren’t being built. I believe it’s still a very popular vehicle due to it’s simplicity and towing capabilities. Dealers seem to have given up on them.

  5. Maybe because very few were built? Another example of GM ignoring their customers.

  6. Under building them, and overpricing them is a favorite recipe for GM to kill of great vehicles. Really sad. Even worse is they won’t modernize the van with a new one.
GM should have just kept on making the 1970 to 1995 Chevy Van and Vandura.

  7. Congrats GM, you destroyed one of the best vehicles ever built by ignoring your customers . I had 2 on order for over 2 years and GM just didnt care. I built my business on these trucks . They are so durable and cheap to operate I actually had competitors saying I had an unfair business advantage because they had Fords . Three of my competitors ditched their Fords for these Vans before covid . I dont mind the old design as the Eurified Ford and Dodge vans are ugly and cheap and the mercedes are pure junk .

    1. My dad said he would never buy a GMC vehicle because he saw it in maintenance all the time (air base) and countered because they are used so much.

Anyway, on to a family business and he got me a GMC van and it never broke down except for a flat tire despite being used very heavily but one day I got a call to come tow my dad’s broken down Ford truck and he never argued with me again about it.

      Magnificent van.

  8. GM has probably got an electric van based on their Ultium powertrain system ready to come out soon. That’s OK but I think a PHEV version of this upcoming electric van with a much smaller battery would sell well to those users who could satisfy 80-90% of their trips on electric only while still being capable of easily handling the long range and/or heavy use cases with hybrid power.

  9. As GM add more battery plants online, Bright Drop will provide this segment of autos. GM will have three battery plants by the end of this year.

  11. It time for GM to update there passenger vans that was in in 2018 so that’s how far behind there are

  12. 101,00 miles on my 2017 3500, 6.0. only regular maintenance. not one penny for repairs, including brakes yet! And it gets used for work everyday, hauling tools and heavy tile. Hows that for reliability.

  13. I had a 2016 Ram Promaster. Short trips around town, it was OK. Long highway trips it was underpowered, lots of wind noise and susceptible to cross-winds. I’m trying to order a 2024 Express Cargo loaded with as many options as the “Build” program will allow. Dealer submitted my order, told me “We’ll see what happens.” (not very encouraging) Haven’t heard anything in a month now.

    1. Wishing you good luck, let us know how it goes, hopefully the dealer was a big van seller in the past, it may help.

    2. When I placed my order for a 2024 in September, I was told the same. Didn’t hear anything until March when the dealer told me it was finally scheduled for production. It still hasn’t been built.

  14. For use, especially towing, on unpaved woods roads the Express has the edge on the new, unibody competition. The Express has a full frame which gives it superior towing capacity, and greater ground clearance. None of the canoe trip shuttle services and outfitters in northern Maine use anything but the old school vans such as the Express and Econoline. The Express still has roof drip rails, which will accommodate a variety of roof racks.

  15. Why is GM letting people down update there passenger vans and get it over with

  16. Checked on my build order that was scheduled for production week of 3/25. It’s now showing on the schedule for week of 4/22. The delays just go on and on at Wentzville.

    1. Are those dates correct, Glenn ??

      Reply
      1. Yes, per my dealer. Ordered 1st week of September 2023. Originally scheduled for production 4th week of March, 2024. Now pushed back to 3rd week of April.
Dealer claims it’s one of their allocation of two for the 2024 model year. We’ll see what happens.

        1. OK, that makes more sense than the dates you first posted.
