Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Savana sales during the fourth quarter of 2022 placed the full-size van in last place in its segment when ranked by sales volume in spite of a strong uptick in sales. The Ford Transit (see running Ford Transit sales) took top honors, as it has for the past few years, posting a 48 percent bump in sales to 31,049 units, while the Ram ProMaster placed second with a 33 percent increase to 18,905 units. The Chevy Express (see running Chevy Express sales), the Savana’s corporate twin, placed third with a segment-best 111 percent jump to 16,360 units, within about 2.5K of the Ram. The Ford E-Series (see running Ford E-Series sales) placed fourth with a seven percent slide to 9,927 units. The GMC Savana took fifth, and last place with 68 percent bump to 7,100 units. The now-discontinued Nissan NV had no deliveries again this quarter.

The GM Authority Take

As we’ve noted before, the GMC Savana, along with the Chevy Express, is an old vehicle that traces its roots to the 1990s. In fact, the duo remains the oldest models in their segment by a wide margin. They’re also the oldest GM vehicles currently in production.

Keeping that in mind, the Savana’s performance was very healthy during the final quarter of 2023. At this point, it’s clear to us that Savana deliveries are a direct byproduct of availability, and that GM will only be able to sell more units if it can expand production of the vehicle.

About GMC Savana

While GM was planning to discontinue the Savana and Express after the 2025 model year, GM may now have plans to redesign the Chevy Express for the 2027 model year, keeping the ICE powertrain. However, there are currently no such plans for the GMC Savana. Additionally, all-electric replacements are rumored for a 2026 debut

The Savana and Express receive a handful of minor changes for the 2022 model year, including the removal of the power window delete option, transmission oil cooler, and CD player option. Bigger changes were applied for the previous 2021 model year, such as the addition of the atmospheric 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine to replace the L96 motor (and its gaseous LC8 variant).

For the 2023 model year, the Savana and Express continue with minimal changes, though one noteworthy change is deletion of the optional turbo-diesel 2.8L I-4 LWN turbo-diesel Duramax engine. The 4.3L V6 LV1 and aforementioned L8T gasoline engines will remain.

The GMC Savana and Chevy Express both ride on the GM GMT 610 platform. Production of the 2023 Savana and Express began at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri on August 15th, 2022.

While the dated duo still remains competitive against other entries in the full-size van space, an updated model from Chevy should help sales for GM even while GMC retires from the segment. Looking beyond that, however, the future of the all-electric full-size van landscape is little more than rumor at this point.

  4. Who is getting delivery of these vehicles ? Its certainly not Main St. America. Unless you consider the rental companies such as Budget, Enterprise , Dollar , U-Haul , and Hertz etc. As well as Amazon , Fed-Ex and UPS. Many of us on these , (non-useful), threads are tradesmen that are still waiting, (like me ), YEARS for their vehicles to arrive. It will be 2 years for me on April 30 2023. The dealership has no clue when it will arrive.

  5. Seems everyone wants to be seen in an uhglee Transit. They must have low self-esteem. GMC, GET WILD and put a 6-cylinder diesel in it. Beef up some areas and see how it sells. Maybe the first workhouse van that can WHEELY (hey, it’s a car site) haul?

Granted, it already has a good gas engine V-8 but nuth’n like a diesel idling down the freeway pulling a LOAD.
