For HD GM truck owners looking to do some serious off-roading or overlanding, a new snorkel kit is available from AEV (American Expedition Vehicles) for the Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD. In addition to its advantages in deep water crossings, the snorkel can help prevent dust and sand from damaging your engine if you live in a dry environment like the Southwest.
The AEV Snorkel Kit is compatible with both the gas 6.6L V8 L8T and the Duramax diesel 6.6L V8 L5P in all trim levels of the Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD. In addition to the snorkel itself, the kit includes a ram air inlet, all necessary hardware, and a trim template to help with installation.
AEV says this snorkel kit “delivers improved engine performance by drawing in the cleanest, coolest air charge possible – even in the worst conditions off-road.” The polyethylene it’s made from “offers the best combination of strength, UV-resistance, and long-term durability” and is suitable for extreme hot and cold temperatures.
We first got a glimpse of this snorkel kit when AEV unveiled its GMC Sierra Grande Concept overlanding rig last year. Based on a Regular Cab 2024 GMC Sierra 2500 HD, it was heavily modified with a wide assortment of equipment like a steel front bumper sourced from the Sierra HD AT4X AEV Edition (which is Crew Cab only), a GM Performance winch, auxiliary lighting, an AEV brush guard, AEV Salta XD wheels with 40-inch tires, an aluminum tray bed, and the snorkel that’s now available for purchase.
AEV estimates the difficulty level of the installation to be “moderate” and estimates that it will take about six hours. There’s a pretty extensive list of required tools to complete the job, which owners should consult before ordering the snorkel. In addition to a drill and various drill bits, required tools include an air or electric cut-off wheel, an air saw, a deburring tool, a rivet tool, and fishing line.
This Michigan-made snorkel has a price tag of $699 and is available to order now for the 2023 and newer Silverado HD and Sierra HD on AEV’s website. The designs for the Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are slightly different; the GMC one is oval-shaped where it attaches to the truck, and the Chevy one has a circular design.

Yeah go ahead and install that snorkel kit and then drive your truck through deep enough water to need it (windshield deep) and let me know how that works out for you. I’ll pass and say that these kits are for looks.
Not true, most exhaust pipe is low in the back corner of truck. If you install this kit, it would allow you to go much deeper in water at least to the door handle but I wouldn’t suggest driving so deep that it comes up to window it’s not made for that deep
Right. This is about as silly as seeing the 3 ball position trailer hitch. The vehicle will rarely, if ever, go off road
And the hitch? Probably hasn’t been used. Nor does the owner know how too….
never understood how the battery still works if under water.
You really need one of these when “Canyon Man” goes to Home Depot to pick up some backs of mulch for the flower bed.
Add the pontoon kit while you’re at it 😉
