GM Authority has learned that two transmissions currently offered on Big Red’s main commercial van will be replaced by two different transmissions on the upcoming 2024 GMC Savana.
The transmission swap is the only change to the 2024 GMC Savana compared to the 2023 model year, with the Savana remaining largely unchanged overall since its introduction in 1996 to replace the GMC Vandura.
For 2023 and earlier model years, GM mated the 8-speed automatic transmission tagged with RPO code M5U with the naturally aspirated 4.3L V6 LV1 gasoline engine rated at 276 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 298 pound-feet of torque at 3,900 rpm.
All Savana Passenger and Cargo configurations, plus the Savana 3500 Cutaway with the 139-inch wheelbase, equip the LV1 engine as standard. For the 2024 GMC Savana this engine will now be paired with the 8-speed automatic transmission tagged with RPO code MTH in place of the dropped M5U transmission.
At the same time, the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, which develops 4401 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 464 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm, was formerly mated to the 6-speed heavy-duty automatic transmission tagged with RPO code MYD.
All Savana Passenger and Cargo configurations, plus the Savana 3500 Cutaway with the 139-inch wheelbase, have the L8T as an available option offered in place of the standard LV1 engine. The Savana 3500 Cutaway and Savana 4500 Cutaway configurations, both available with 159-inch and 177-inch wheelbases, come with the L8T engine as standard.
Now, the 6-speed MYD transmission previously used to transmit power to the wheels from the L8T engine will be replaced by the 8-speed heavy-duty automatic transmission (RPO code N8X).
All model years of the GMC Savana, including the upcoming 2024 GMC Savana, are produced in various configurations to match specific roles. These variants include the GMC Savana Cargo, the GMC Savana Passenger and the GMC Savana Cutaway.
The 2024 GMC Savana carries over several changes made to the 2023 model year of the van, including removal of the formerly available 2.8L I4 LWN turbodiesel Duramax engine from the powertrain lineup, as GM Authority previously reported.
GM also increased the price of the 2023 GMC Savana by $5,200 for all configurations and trims. Prices now range from $39,895 for the Work Van trim level in the Cargo 2500 Regular Wheelbase to $49,490 for the LT trim in the Passenger 3500 Extended Wheelbase configuration.
Start of regular production (SORP) for the 2024 GMC Savana van is currently scheduled for September 5th, 2023, four days after the 2023 model year ceases production.
The GMC Savana uses the GMT 610 platform for structure, while production takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri. Notably, the Savana Cutaway is also produced by Navistar at a separate facility in Ohio.

That 6.6L engine is a whopper at 4601 hp, but the torque seems awfully low for that much HP.
This is the second mention of over 4,000 HP for the L8T engine. Let’s proof read our messages before we hit “send”.
“which develops 4401 horsepower at 5,200 rpm”
Whew!! I’d love to drive that for just one day as long as I didn’t have to pay for the gas!
4401Hp? That would definitely destroy some Hellcats and Plaids and McLaren’s! Sign me up! 😂
Ordered 2023 with extended wheelbase 6.6 engine siver in color but no confirmation that they will build it.
