Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Combined GMC Yukon sales – those of the regular-length Yukon and extended-length Yukon XL – maintained second place in the mainstream full-size SUV segment during the second quarter of 2023 when ranked by sales volume – a spot it earned over a year ago by outselling the Ford Expedition and all other segment rivals, with the exception of the two Chevy entries.

Individually, the regular-length Tahoe (see running Chevy Tahoe sales) placed first with a 39 percent swell to 29,258 units. The Ford Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales), which includes the regular-length Expedition and extended-length Expedition Max, followed in second place with a 52 percent climb to 20,007 units. The Suburban (see running Chevy Suburban sales) placed third with an 87 percent jump to 16,661 units. The GMC Yukon (see running GMC Yukon sales), took fourth with a 22 percent bump to 12,471 units, while the GMC Yukon XL followed in fifth with a 43 percent jump to 9,798 units. Note that the two GMC Yukon models outsold the Ford duo on a combined basis. The Jeep Wagoneer, which includes the regular-length Wagoneer and extended-length Wagoneer L, took sixth place with a 21 percent drop to 8,075 units. The Nissan Armada placed seventh with a 104 percent leap to 5,915 units, while the Toyota Sequoia took up the last spot with 5,193 deliveries, though sales increased nearly 100-fold year-over-year with the launch of the redesigned 2023 Sequoia.

The GM Authority Take

Combined GMC Yukon sales were up a healthy 30 percent during the second quarter of 2023, with Big Red’s full-size SUV family continuing to outsell the Ford Expedition family. This was typically not the case until the launch of the all-new Yukon family for the 2021 model year. Not only did the Yukons alone outsell the Ford duo, they also sold more all other direct contenders with the exception of their corporate cousins, the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban.

Looking ahead, we expect GMC Yukon sales to continue at their current levels, as GM’s Arlington facility in Texas is running at full capacity, with no room to produce more units. However, the ongoing labor negotiations between GM and the UAW might disrupt production levels, thereby negatively impacting sales volume in subsequent quarters.

About GMC Yukon And Yukon XL

As noted above, the Yukon family was overhauled (re-engineered and redesigned) for the 2021 model year. With new looks, technology, enhanced performance, and optimized efficiency, Big Red’s duo, along with Chevy’s Tahoe/Suburban, continue to appeal to a wide range of customers.

For the 2023 GMC Yukon duo, GM introduced a new range-topping 2023 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate as “the most premium Yukon ever offered.” It comes standard with Vader chrome exterior trim, 22-inch wheels, full-grain leather upholstery, open-pore wood trim, premium audio equipment, and more, including GM’s Rear Seat Media System.

The 2023 Yukon duo also gets expanded coverage for GM’s hands-free, semi-autonomous Super Cruise driver assistance technology.

While the 2024 GMC Yukon was originally expected to introduce a mid-cycle enhancement, GM Authority has learned that the refresh will arrive for the 2025 model year. Even so, the 2024 Yukon drops the Redwood Metallic paint color, while the 2024 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate will offer two new wheel options.

We spied the refreshed GMC Yukon for the first time a year ago February, and a month later caught the refreshed Yukon Denali Ultimate testing. In December we spied the refreshed Yukon testing again.

The refreshed GMC Yukon AT4 was spied testing for the first time this past March. Also, the upcoming refreshed model was caught rolling on the 24-inch wheels that will be offered for the first time on the Yukon duo, a bump up from the currently available 22-inchers. Additionally, we caught a glimpse of the refreshed Yukon interior.

Arrival of the Professional Grade brand’s updated premium models will further secure GM’s domination of the lucrative full-size SUV segment, which is second only to the bread-and-butter full-size truck space.

  1. The GMC Yukon is a superior product to the Expedition hands down. It’s not even close.

  2. the expeditions ive seen have been cadillac priced (110k)

  3. The Expedition really isnt even in the same class as the GMC Yukon, maybe the lower trims but a King Ranch or Platinum Expedition is a joke compared to a Yukon Denali, especially the Ultimate edition. The other big issue is quality, the QC on a GMC product vs a Ford product is night and day. Ford continues to have unbelievable recalls that literally last forever, just look at the 360 RVC issues happening now, its been a year and they just figured out a solution. Curb appeal of the Expedition vs Tahoe or Yukon isn’t even close, Expedition needs a complete overhaul to compete moving forward.
