Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
GMC Yukon sales kept the full-size SUV family in second place in the mainstream full-size SUV segment during Q2 2022 as it has for the past year.
Our approach to the figures remains: Ford combines sales of the Expedition and Expedition Max into a single line item called Expedition, while GM’s Chevy Tahoe and Suburban as well as the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL are reported on separate line items. To keep it apples-to-apples, we combine sales of the Tahoe with those of the Suburban, and do the same with sales of the Yukon and Yukon XL.
The Yukon’s corporate cousins, the Chevy Tahoe (see running Chevy Tahoe sales) and Chevy Suburban (see running Chevy Suburban sales), together remained at the top in spite of a 27 percent drop to 29,966 units. The Yukon family continued in second place in spite of a similar 28 percent slide to 17,070 units. The Ford Expedition family (see running Ford Expedition sales) took third with a 48 percent drop to 13,129 units.
The all-new Jeep Wagoneer, which launched last summer, took fourth place with 10,220 units. The Nissan Armada took fifth with a 60 percent drop to 2,897 units, while the Toyota Sequoia remained in last place with a 98 decrease to just 55 units ahead of the next-generation 2023 Toyota Sequoia arriving at dealerships.

The GM Authority Take
GMC Yukon family sales have continued to outsell the Ford Expedition range over the past year, a turn of events that was unheard of prior to the launch of the all-new Yukon range for the 2021 model year. The Yukon and Yukon XL were only outdone by corporate cousins Chevy Tahoe/Suburban, which together enabled The General to again dominate the full-size SUV segment.
The decline in Yukon/Yukon XL as well as Tahoe/Suburban sales was the result of decreased availability due to production-related constraints. As such, sales were limited as dealers simply didn’t have as many units to sell as they did in the year-ago quarter.
The Yukon family was overhauled (re-engineered and redesigned) for the 2021 model year. With new looks, technology, enhanced performance, and optimized efficiency, Big Red’s duo, along with Chevy’s Tahoe/Suburban, continue to appeal to a wide range of customers.
In May, The General introduced the 2023 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate as the ultra-luxurious trim level that was first introduced on the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup earlier this year. The range-topping trim is described by GM as “the most premium Yukon ever offered,” featuring upgrades both inside and out. Notably, the 2023 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate differs from the Denali Ultimate Package (RPO Code PEC) that was offered on the 2022 GMC Yukon Denali as an option. While Denali Ultimate was a package that could be applied to the Denali trim for the 2022 model year, the 2023 model year reintroduces it as an all-new trim level that further differentiates the Denali Ultimate from the regular Denali with even more upmarket equipment and features.
GM is also preparing a refresh of the Yukon, which is set to debut for the 2024 model year. We caught a prototype of the 2024 GMC Yukon refresh undergoing testing, followed by what appears to be the 2024 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate prototype.
In April, Stellantis debuted the Jeep Wagoneer L and the more luxuriously-appointed Grand Wagoneer L, with the two extended wheelbase full-size SUVs set to rival GM’s own extended-length offerings, including the Yukon XL, Suburban, and Cadillac Escalade ESV. GM seems to have already anticipated these challenges, as can be evidenced by the aforementioned GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate trim and the upcoming 2024 GMC Yukon refresh.
Notably, sales volume of the regular-length Wagoneer has continue to rise, edging out the regular-length Yukon for the first time this quarter, albeit by just 10 units.
Production for the 2023 GMC Yukon kicked off on July 18th, 2022, at the GM Arlington plant in Texas. The online configurator for the 2023 GMC Yukon went live earlier this month.

GM could have sold more if Mary could figure out how to get them on dealer lots!
I would like to trade my Sierra Pickup on a Yukon XL. But, there is very little inventory. And what is out there is either White or Black. No Burgandy or Dark Blue. And haven’t found any with a 3.0 Diesel. Can’t believe we are still fighting this Chip crap.
Doesn’t help that the Expeditions/Navigators have become the new bolts, catching fire at will
I can’t see the Armada staying in production that much longer since the Titan will be leaving soon. The Sequoias are built alongside the Tundra, and I guess that supports the justification for their existence. I know the Texas plant was underutilized because when it first opened, they said they had enough capacity to build 200,000 Tundra’s the first year, a number they never met and had to add the taco to the plant to make it more efficient. I may be wrong, but I think the Bronco was more competitive to the GM quadruplets, but I guess OJ murdered the that too.
