One of the longest-running rivalries in the automotive industry is that of Chevrolet vs. Ford. The contention is alive and well today, with the two American auto brands battling it out in many segments, both at home and elsewhere around the world. One of the more simple ways to determine which of the two legendary marques is coming out ahead in the rivalry is by looking at the raw sales figures, and that’s what we’ll do here today for the third quarter of 2021.
During that timeframe, total Chevy sales in the U.S. market dropped 36 percent to 287,925 units. Meanwhile, Ford brand sales fell nearly 27 percent to 383,805 units.

For Ford, Heavy Trucks (F-650 and F-750) were the only models to experience growth during the quarter, growing over 20 percent to 3,199 units.
Car Sales
Chevy outsold Ford in the passenger car segment during Q3 2021.
Chevy car sales in the U.S. fell nearly 65 percent to 19,464 units, while Ford car sales fell over 78 percent to 9,380 units. While Chevy sold more than twice as many cars as Ford, it’s worth noting that Chevy also offers a much broader car lineup. Specifically, the Bow Tie brand currently offers the Camaro, Corvette, Spark and Malibu (with the Sonic and Impala having been discontinued) while Ford only offers the Mustang and the GT supercar, having discontinued core models like the Fiesta, Focus, Fusion and Taurus.

Additionally, Ford Ranger sales decreased over 49 percent while the Chevy Colorado experienced a decline of over 53 percent, with the Ranger outselling the Colorado by 1,639. The circumstance is the result of significantly constrained availability of the Colorado at the dealer level as a result of the ongoing microchip shortage. Production stoppages at the GM’s Wentzville plant in Missouri, which builds the Colorado, occurred again in September, and – most recently – production has been halted again for three weeks in December 2021. Finally, Ford recorded 506 deliveries of its new compact Maverick pickup.

The huge decline in Chevy Express sales is the result of the aforementioned production stoppages at GM’s Wentzville plant that also builds the Express. EV Sales
Chevy was outsold by Ford when focusing specifically on electric vehicles, with the Bolt EV experiencing a large decrease of nearly 62 percent at 2,174 units sold. Meanwhile, the all-new Bolt EUV tallied 2,341 units sold during Q3 2021. Both Chevy electric car sales totaled 4,515 units. While the 2022 Chevy Bolt EV received a refresh alongside the launch of its all-new larger sibling, the Chevy Bolt EUV, sales of both models is currently being stifled by the ongoing stop-sale and resulting production stoppage over a battery-related fire risk.

Overall, the Ford brand sold exactly 95,880 more units than Chevy during the third quarter of 2021, mostly as a result of higher van and truck sales. However, it’s worth noting that General Motors (Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC) sold more vehicles than the Ford Motor Company (the namesake Ford brand plus Lincoln) during the same timeframe. To wit – GM posted 446,997 deliveries versus Ford’s 400,843 units.
The GM Authority Take
The fact that Ford outsold Chevy during Q3 2021 is nothing new, since this has been the case for the past several years. That said, the results present a somewhat distorted comparison, since both automakers continue to face major supply issues stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, including parts shortages, plant shut downs and other manufacturing issues, as well as a bevy of other logistical problems.
Interestingly, Ford’s 27 percent decline resulted in it losing 140,437 units year-over-year, while Chevy’s 36 percent drop caused it to lose 162,392 units. We should have more of an apples-to-apples comparison once the operating environment stabilizes and returns back to normal. When that might be is currently anyone’s guess.

And as sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.
Let’s go Brandon!
Let’s go insurrection!
Chevrolet lost a lot of customers with the failed lifters issue and how they handled it, that will cost them alot of customers
A good portion of this is GM’s own fault. They don’t produce their own CHIPS. They let the Asian’s hold them captive. If you don’t produce the vehicles you can’t sell them. And not everybody wants a electric vehicle. I do not. I am looking for a Yukon XL Denali. Or a Escalade. Try to find one.
100k loss in sales ? That calls for a definite change at the very Top ! Bye Mary, go peddle your EV fraud somewhere else.
Chevrolet sales dropped 68,000 YOY, Ford dropped 96,000. Both dropped significantly due to market conditions. We all know the supply issues (manufacturing, chips, logistics) but I’d be interested to know the demand issues. Remember, people who take the time to read GMA are taking a much deeper dive into vehicles (especially GM) than normies. Some of these models don’t have many sales and have tremendous competition in addition to Ford (car segments especially).
Is it all Mary? Well, it is certainly happening under her watch and she may own the EV focus but the CAFE standards are pushing all manufacturers in that direction. The EV push is inevitable but GM is not keeping up market demand. Are they not making vehicles people want to buy or are they not able to make vehicles because of supply-side issues? In some ways the supply-side issues are easier to fix and will be corrected. I’d be concerned with the demand issues after looking at overall sales.
They are not leading or keeping up in any segment. They were the first to talk about going all electric but so many others have beat them to the market with actual vehicles you can buy not and not somewhere down the road.
Don’t know what kind of strategy they are using. But to produce unreliable and uncompetative vehicles along with poor customer service sure don’t seem like a good strategy to attract and keep customers.
OH. Billj598, I agree Clueless Mary needs go.
I guess it’s time that someone at GM got their head out of their ass!!!
But Mary got all kinds of awards? What a joke. She only cares about China and EVs.
But Bill, gm is a woke company. Doesn’t that count for something?
Guys, it’s all about the component shortages, for both brands. Couldn’t care about Mary one way or another, but the decrease in sales has little or nothing to do with her, like her or not.
I agree with Cole that I do not care about who the top leadership is, but I do think that person should be held accountable. Look at just a few of the top issues that have occurred on Mary’s watch.
gm is hit the hardest on the chip shortage of any top automaker. Why is gm last?
gm crushed Ford when bringing back the Colorado (decision before Mary), yet gets crushed by Ford on the Maverick (looks to sell 400K units). How was this missed?
Ram passes Silverado in sales and F150 expands it lead (prior to Mary the gap was closing)
Tahoe / Suburban had to be pushed back over a year, because the planned update would not be competitive with the new Expedition. Who approved the first version and why?
Blazer vs Bronco? Ford smartly used the brand on a CUV and an SUV. Blazer K anyone?
I could go on.
It seems to me that gm no longer wants to lead, only follow. I just hope the EV thing works out. We will get a hint in a few days at CES.
Phone warriors want the good ol’ days of GM when they were #1 in marketshare and not a penny in the pocket like 2007….
Or they just want these companies to make chips themselves and stop worrying about how much money they are getting back for their cheap crappy investors.
I see this over and over. I’ve been in the chip biz for decades. Even the likes of Qualcomm, Nvidia and Apple don’t make their own chips. These companies sell a hundred million copies of a part they design, and they still don’t make them. Why? Because it is not economical. TSMC does roughly 60% of all parts made. All parts worldwide. There is a reason. It is hard. As a simple example, alignment/precision of the internals are on the order of .5nm. A big part is 20mm long/wide. That is 1 part in 40 million lengthwise, or if you had a football field of 100 yards everything must be accurately positioned to .00009 inches. And these days there are dozens of layers that need to be aligned like that. Heck, AMD just switched from GF to TSMC because GF could not make the parts AMD wanted.
Umm apple is making there own chips and within the next 2-3 years they will be able to supply all of there devices with there own chips so you are wrong there. It’s called apple silicon.
Wrong. TSMC make’s Apple’s chips per Apple’s specs. That’s why an Apple product say “designed in Cupertino.”
Some just hate to hate as they have no real clue off all that is going on and how things work in the real world off the web.
And yet, we must all bow down to M. Mary.
Why are you showing 3rd quarter results when 4th quarter results will be release later this week?
Why can’t lowercase gm post monthly sales figures as well? Lots of other manufacturers are much more transparent about sales… Probably cause Mary “Antoinette” Barra is one foot out the door and poised to completely cash out after her empty EV money grab backfires… lowercase gm is still somehow a bull stock, but it won’t stay that way forever.
well after weeks of looking I went ahead and put a deposit down on a ’22 Acadia SLT…Satin Steel with cocoa leather. I’ve never bought a new vehicle sight unseen but who knows how long this mess will take to sort out. My Acadia is stuck at the factory waiting for a “part”. any guesses? Since Buick is incapable of having a vehicle between Envision and Enclave I went with the GMC. Finger crossed.
Chevrolet is a dying brand unable to regain its pre 2000 momentum or market share. Overall Toyota stays stable, Hyundai-Kia continues to grow, but Chevrolet each year looses a little bit more share especially if you remove trucks from the equation creating a more apples to apples comparison.
Mary Barra has done well with Bright Dop, investment in Cruze, but current management has no idea how to rehab the current stable of GM brands. I don’t like Ford, but they appear capable of swaying buyers outside the truck demo especially with the resurrection of Bronco and expansion of Mustang.
I don’t think GM will make it much longer, they just can’t compete in today’s market or tomorrow’s. Picture this, if Tesla purchases MB, imho Ford, GM and Stellantis will be done for in a year. They can’t compete in the EV market and if Tesla wants to build hybrid cars then it’s all over. I personally think if Musk purchased Jeep and RAM along with MB, then he would destroy all other car companies except the Chinese.
As GM has said they plan to make 30 new EV’s but they can’t even get the bolt right and it’s loosing ground in the battery arena. Tesla is huge and is worth 3 times the amount as Toyota and could easily purchase any if not most of the car companies out there. They will continue to invest more and more into their newer EV’s leaving Tesla what GM was in the 50’s meanwhile bankrupting GM and the rest trying and always playing catch-up. It’s depressing because I loved GM cars but the times have changed.
The plain fact is people are tired of paying thousands of dollars for vehicles that have quality problems. Because quality has gone down hill so much, people are not faithful to any one brand anymore. They hop around from one brand of vehicle to the next hoping to find something that will last longer than their payments.
I switched to Ram mainly because GM going all in on Electric. Can’t run many business with vehicles getting 300 miles a day, not to mention the Electric plants putting out simular emissions any ways. So one can argue leaves us in the same situation but do to materials needed at the mercy of foreign countries
You do know Ram will have an electric truck by next year along with Dodge and Chrysler.
It does not matter.
everything will sell at MSRP + this year.
Lol sure, except for the Trailblazer, which always has atleast $500 on the hood…
Nothing new…….Just another Barra Blunder…
