The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Argentina sales suffered a new double-digit contraction in September, when the bowtie brand registered its worst commercial performance so far this year in the South American country, selling only 1,685 units. Last month’s decline represents Chevy’s fifth consecutive decline in the Argentine market as a result of unstable vehicle supply caused by the global semiconductor shortage.

In August, almost all the models offered by Chevrolet in Argentina experienced substantial drops compared to September 2020 – led by the Chevy Onix, which registered its worst sales performance of the first nine months of the year. The Onix is still experiencing extremely low inventory levels as a result of interrupted production in Brazil for five and a half months of 2021. Meanwhile, the Chevy Cruze – produced locally in Argentina – suffered a setback that halted the growth the model was experiencing over the last few months. Even so, the Cruze remained Chevy’s best-selling model during the month.

The Chevy TrailBlazer SUV was the only nameplate that managed to post an increase in sales volume in August. However, the 40 deliveries registered by the midsize body-on-frame utility makes it one of Chevrolet’s lowest volume models in Argentina.
