The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Brazil sales suffered another dramatic decline in July. The results represent the second consecutive month of declines for the Bow Tie brand in the South American country, after sales fell 41 percent in June. In fact, the 9,391 units registered in July represent the worst performance Chevrolet has registered in the Brazilian market in many years, even lower than the 9,968 deliveries in May 2020 – the lowest result during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

All this is the result of a huge decrease in sales of the Chevrolet Onix, which accumulated six consecutive years as the best-selling vehicle in Brazil and all of Latin America until the arrival of the global semiconductor crisis. Production of the vehicle has been idled for four months at the GM Gravataí plant, which is the hardest-hit General Motors facility. This turn of events caused the brand to fall from the first to the seventh place among the most automotive firms. sold in the country.

This situation is also impacting the Chevrolet Tracker. Sales of the all-new crossover fell significantly for the second month in a row after being the fastest growing nameplate in Brazil. In contrast, the Chevy Bolt EV and S10 pickup were the only Chevy models to see an uptick in sales during July. The midsize pickup posted a large triple-digit year-over-year increase, driven by increased model production to meet pent-up demand.
