The GM Authority Take
After two consecutive months of exceptional growth in May and June, GM Mexico sales declined markedly in July. The automaker’s negative sales performance in the Mexican market comes just after it commenced the official discontinuation of the Chevy Beat, its best-selling nameplate in the Latin country over the last few years.
As such, the mini car the primary driver of lost sales volume by GM Mexico in July, posting a dramatic 83 percent drop that accounted for 2,926 fewer units on a year-over-year basis. Similarly, the Chevrolet Onix also suffered a sharp decline in sales volume. The subcompact sedan, manufactured locally at the GM San Luis Potosí plant, is currently facing extremely low inventory levels due to the global shortage of semiconductors.
By contrast, the Chevy Aveo posted a healthy uptick in sales volume, becoming GM’s best-selling model in Mexico not only in July, but also during the first seven months of 2021. In addition, the new 2022 Chevrolet Captiva registered its best performance to date. In doing so, it became the best-selling utility for GM Mexican market for the very first time, with 1,580 units sold.
Meanwhile, GM’s entire lineup of full-size SUVs saw massive triple-digit increases in Mexico.
