The GM Authority Take

After posting its worst performance in several decades in August, Chevrolet Brazil sales again suffered a significant decline in September, representing the fourth consecutive month of declining sales volume in the Brazilian market. However, last month’s 17,983 units represent a significant improvement from the much lower sales volume seen during the past few months, allowing Chevrolet to climb from sixth to third place among the nation’s best-selling automobile brands.

The remarkable recovery of Chevrolet Brazil sales in August is primarily due to improved availability of the critically-acclaimed Chevy Onix. The subcompact car range, which has traditionally been Brazil’s best-selling vehicle, registered a substantial increase of 7,381 units compared to August. The improvement is due to Onix production finally restarting after five months of idled production.

Despite the increase being great news for GM and the dealer network, the monthly sales volume of the Onix nameplate represents a substantial decrease compared to regular levels, both during September as well as in the year-to-date timeframe.

To wit, Onix sales totaled 8,058 units during September 2021 versus 21,661 units during September 2019. The latter represents a timeframe of regular operations prior to the onset of COVID-19, and the associated secondary and tertiary effects of the pandemic.

It’s worth noting that we have yet to see the complete selling power of the second-generation Onix, since the all-new model was launched in the vicinity of the coronavirus pandemic, resulting in limited demand, supply, or both.

In addition, September 2021 sales performance also shows a healthy recovery of the Chevy Tracker on a month-over-month basis, with 3,936 sales in September 2021 versus 1,293 in August 2021.

Meanwhile, the Cruze, TrailBlazer SUV and S10 each registered healthy gains during September.

In fact, the S10 midsize pickup once again recorded over 4,000 sales, positioning it as Chevy’s second best-selling nameplate in the Brazilian market during September.
