A new meme has hit the web comparing the high-dollar Ford Mustang GTD against four other performance vehicles, including the Chevy Camaro ZL1 1LE, highlighting the new uber-‘Stang’s impressive Nurburgring lap time. While the Mustang GTD is undoubtedly one very fast machine, we have to question whether it’s a fair comparison. Spoiler alert – it’s not.
In the top-left corner of the meme, the Ford Mustang GTD is showcased with an impressive Nurburgring lap time of 6:57.58. As Ford’s latest halo performance car, the hand-built Mustang GTD is loaded with race-inspired features, such as an advanced aerodynamic package, carbon-fiber wide body, and a supercharged 5.2L V8 producing 800 horsepower.
Opposing the GTD is the Chevy Camaro ZL1, listed with a lap time of 7:29.60. While this number seems significantly slower than that of the GTD, it’s worth noting that the Camaro ZL1 1LE achieved a much quicker 7:16.04 lap back in 2017 during a GM test with Bill Wise at the wheel and Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar 3R tires in the corners.
As for motivation, the ZL1 1LE leverages the supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4, good for 650 horsepower, while the 1LE package includes aerodynamic upgrades and a track-focused suspension system – all for a fraction of the Mustang GTD’s price. In fact, at $81,195, you could get four examples of the Camaro ZL1 1LE for the price of one Mustang GTD (that is, if GM was still making them).
The bottom-left corner of the meme features the Audi RS3, a compact performance sedan with a lap time of 7:33.12. Unlike the V8-powered Mustang and Camaro, the Audi RS3 employs a turbocharged 2.5L inline-five engine producing 401 horsepower, with quattro all-wheel-drive to put the power down. Finally, the meme pokes fun at the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, dubbing it the “Land Yacht,” posting a lap time of 7:51.51. Despite the heft, the Hellcat’s supercharged 6.2L HEMI V8 isn’t anything to sneeze at, churning out an impressive 717 horsepower. And oh yeah, the Challenger SRT Hellcat was discontinued as well.
While we certainly get the point that’s trying to be made here, the comparison isn’t really a good one. In fact, we’d put the Mustang GTD in an entirely different category than the other three machines due to its sophistication and, more importantly, price. Rather, if those Ford fans really wanted to hit Chevy where it hurts, mentioning the demise of the sixth-gen Camaro would sting a whole lot more.
But maybe we shouldn’t be giving them any ideas…

No not the same thing.
I can put $500k in a Hyundai that can outvrun the Mustang but still not the same deal.
This is Fords Superbird. They designed and sell just enough specialty cars to race them as the base production car could never win.
Mustang Fan Boys like this are the same ones we see hitting people at car events on YouTube.
You expect Mustang fans to be intelligent?
Well it seems Gay Motors only have Crap to say with lying to make them look good. 🤣🤣
Thank you for proving the point with your unintelligible drivel.
For $245k, I will be 32 seconds slower. Thanks.
In another contrast, I will go the rest of my life and not once will I see that Mustang on any road in the US. It’ll never happen, I’ll never see one driving down my street.
ZR1 for 150K less?
A few Ford components in a vehicle designed and built ground up by race shop…Multimatic. Big deal.
Sour grapes old chap typical chev fan 🤣🤣🤣 pmsfl
I, myself have been a enthusiast of “ICE” operated, clarified every day street registered vehicles since i, myself began driving in 1991! Anything type of Electric Vehicle should not have even been invented: let alone spent funding or effort to make E.V. be on our roadway’s! Electric Vehicles in my opinion is as bad as Crypto-anything!
Read what Red had to say above, it’s like he killed two birds with one stone.
Naa, electric vehicles are todays muscle cars. Fast in the straight line not particularly good in the corners but find to drive.
But…you can’t buy “new” Camaros anymore, so their point is moot. So glad I switched to Ford.
Curious, why not the C8?
A base C8 Stingray performs better than the range-topping S650 Mustang, and is priced within reach.
They should compare it against the Stage 3 Yenko SC. Price is about the same.
Yenkos are slower. And the point is a smaller displacement can beat any huge displacement engine.
For that kind of price difference I hope it’s faster.
Let’s level the field a bit and race it against another $325k Nurburgring-designed car. Please post the results here.
Oh, a bunch of childish men arguing about track times?
Now do sales figures.
🥱
ZR1 Costs less and you get more!
Should throw the garage 56 camaro on the ring and see the time
A purpose built race car….funny how they never bragged about the latest Ford GT…lol probably nothing to brag about with that anemic v6 and all for around $1,000,000. The ZL-1 is a pushrod 16 valve V8 PRODUCTION model and did it in 7:16, if anything, Ford should be embarrassed that there isn’t a bigger difference. ZR1 will snatch that crown away so enjoy it while you can
Gay Motors have a huge displacement engine. Ford has the smallest Displacement engine and it beats huge displacement engines. Educate yourself.
Only to carry on the childish antics. I had heard it was Ford drivers having the smallest displacement! lol
Dude that is the dumbest reply here. Congrats lol
You are forgetting to mention that the “official” length of the track for this historic GTD run is actually longer than it was back when those other cars ran it.
So, if apples were apples and it was on that same older track configuration, this GTD run would be about a 6:50.
Sorry, gm… try harder.
Did you actually listen to yourself before typing? That’s like going “the slegdehammer hit over 250, Ford try harder” despite the car not even being in the same category. Let’s actually be smart here.
All that money for a title.😂
The ZL1 was only about 19 seconds slower for about 240 K less so ZL1 wins, period.
With about 200hp more on top in the Mustang, I would certainly expect it to lap faster, so no rocket science here, so stop making a ridiculous comparison.
If I took $200k and put it into the ZL1, it will lap much lower than the Mustang and make more power than the little 5 liter.
Also, someone said small displacement beats large displacement forgetting that there is no replacement for displacement. You put the same amount of boost that’s being injected into the 5 liter into a 6.2L liter and you’re little displacement won’t beat large displacement. 6.2 will make more poweer, period! Ridiculous comments!
Anyone can make a fast car with $325,000 to spend. The trick is to make a fast car that is some what affordable. I. E. a base C8.
So Pratt and Miller should just stick some Cup 2 Rs on a Z06 GT3.R and see what it does. Get some apples to apples comparison lol.
I commend Ford for funding a road legal GT3 Car. It would be SO cool to have GM throw a bunch of money at Pratt and Miller to build a road legal Z06 GT3.
But Ford did all that, still gets REKT by a 911 GT3 RS at the ring. You could have a GT3 RS, a fully loaded Macan GTS for the wife, and have enough left over for a vacation to Germany, rent a 911 and drive the ‘ring for the price of the GTD. And I bet the Porsche is more comfortable, too!
Awwwwwwww, did someone get their feelings hurt. If it were a Camaro out front by over half a minute, we would never hear the end of it. No, I have Mustangs (Fox Generation) and A Corvette as well. They both are good cars and are specific for their capabilities. To make a Corvette go fast in a straight line it requires engine work, to make a Mustang handle the curves it takes suspension work. The Camaro was not successful enough to maintain market share so GM put their effort toward Corvette. Still a half a minute minimum is still an eternity on the track. It is what it is.
Its so funny Ford has spend all this money on this car and so few people will own one and they won’t drive them. I would take that Audi RS3 anyway it’s a slot car and one fast lil car for a 5cyl. But the whole thing is they want all this money and they still can’t catch the Porsche 911 GT2RS. Also everyone knows Porsche has been building that same style of body with that engine hanging right over those wheels forever. Also the PDK is the best transmission bar none. So as Ford is trying to play catchup using a German driver Porsche is already years ahead of the game. Also you have to give alot of credit to Mercedes who has thee track record. So keep trying Ford even GM isn’t far behind you!
Ummm the Z/28 did a 7:29 in wet conditions in 2014. The ZL1 1LE did a 7:10. So 14 seconds slower
Even as a mustang fan, this is such a stupid comparison. Multimatic built this car. Ford basically gave them a basic platform and then multimatic did there thing. For the money, the zl1 1le is really hard to beat and is a tremendous car.
and it’s true competitor is the gt500. Not this car. Those 2 cars are so dam close in performance it really just comes down to tires and drivers. You have to give dodge, gm credit. At least they built there top performance cars in house with the viper acr, corvette. Ford can’t really take credit for this car. The gt500, yes. Not this thing.
There’s a whole lot of butthurt in this piece. Who even cares they don’t make the Camaro anymore it’s dead. It keeps dying. Maybe they should quit bringing it back. What is funny is that a car built on a muscle car/pony car chassis spank the Z06, and every other Corvette in history without any trouble at all. I think it’s hilarious they still haven’t released the ZR1 time yet.
Ah yes, a track purposed car beat a car for the road, what a smart comment bravo. Let’s dump over 300k into the other cars then to even the playing field, oh what’s that? It’d just be the same thing all over again? Weird how that works huh?
You Chevy guys are completely missing the point. Ford decided they wanted to beat the Euros in their own back yard. And the GTD is quicker at the Green Hell than many supercars. Agreed, you can buy a Porsche or Mercedes that’s quicker for a less $$$.
15 seconds at over 120 mph is a quarter mile. If you don’t drive your Chevy on a racetrack, then 15 seconds or more means nothing.
