The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Argentina sales suffered another significant decline during July, as General Motors South America continues to face serious production difficulties on its best-selling models due to ongoing semiconductor shortages. In fact, the 38 percent decrease in July represents the third consecutive contraction that Chevrolet has experienced in the Argentine market, after declining 4 percent in May and 51 percent in June.

In July, most of the models offered by Chevrolet in Argentina were in the red, with significant two- and three-digit declines across the board. Once again, the nameplate impacted the most was the Chevrolet Onix, which saw sales volume drop 978 units compared to the already-weak performance of July 2020.

The subcompact car, which was the best-selling vehicle in all of Latin America for the past six years and that continues to be in strong demand, is facing a significant inventory shortage as production has been idled for an entire four months at the GM Gravataí plant due to the lack of microchips.

The Chevrolet Cruze and Tracker were the only Chevy models to post sales volume growth in July. The same scenario also took place in June. The Cruze, manufactured locally at the GM Alvear plant in Argentina, finished as Chevrolet’s best-selling vehicle in the country for the third consecutive month.
