The midsize mainstream pickup truck segment fell 14 percent to 107,195 units in Q3 2023, meaning Canyon sales outperformed the segment average.

Below, we provide Honda Ridgeline sales for informational purposes, as the model straddles the midsize and full-size pickup truck segments, placing it above the Frontier and Ranger in terms of sales this quarter.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Canyon sales remained at the bottom of the midsize mainstream pickup truck segment this quarter, as it has since the nameplates return for the 2015 model year. However, it did have the smallest drop on a percentage basis as every other model except for the Colorado posted double-digit drops in sales. Furthermore, adding up sales of the Colorado to those of the Canyon brings GM the closest it’s ever been to the Toyota Tacoma.

Looking ahead, we expect Canyon sales to dip as a result supply and availability constraints imposed by the UAW strike. After that, we expect sales to improve drastically.

About GMC Canyon

A year ago, GM unveiled the all-new 2023 GMC Canyon as the all-new, third generation of the midsize pickup, featuring new exterior styling, an overhauled cabin, a new powertrain, and a range of tech goodies. It also introduced the first-ever 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X, which is available with an exclusive Edition 1 package. After a somewhat rocky start from a deliveries perspective, units of the all-new Canyon finally began to trickle into dealers and sales began to improve.

This past summer, the first-ever 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition made its debut, joining the Canyon family by taking the off-road capability of the Canyon AT4X to the next level thanks to several trail-ready upgrades over the standard 2023 Canyon AT4X, framed as “the most advanced and capable Canyon ever.” Incidentally, the 2024 Canyon AT4X and AT4X AEV Edition will both get a new launch control feature as part of the Baja Mode, improving performance both on-road and off-road. Consequently, the 2024 Canyon drops AT4X Edition 1 variant, which will be indirectly replaced by the aforementioned AT4X AEV Edition.

2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition

It’s worth noting that the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition and 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison basically share the same suspension configuration, which enables both trucks to stand tall with an identical 12.2 inches of ground clearance. However, there is one small difference, which we outlined in this report.

GM also revealed that all trim levels of the 2024 Canyon will integrate Ultifi, the automaker’s new end-to-end vehicle software platform. Some potential uses of Ultifi include interfacing with the owner’s smart home, which could include functions such as switching on security systems when the owner leaves and turning them off when they return, changing the home temperature, and much more.

Additionally, the 2024 GMC Canyon gets GM’s TurboMax engine branding as the official name of the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine in the High-Output tune. The boosted four is the sole powertrain offered on all 2023 and 2024 Canyon trims.

  1. It’s no wonder sales are down. My best friend ordered a new GNC Canyon AT-4 the first week of July 2023. To date he hasn’t heard a thing from the GM factory confirming the order or a delivery date. He and I are both loyal GM customers. Is this how GM takes care of its customers?
When I get ready to swap my Equinox in a few months, I’ll be looking at other options.

  2. It should be no surprise that sales are down because GM has none to sell. My GMC Dealer keeps asking to buy my ’19 Canyon but when I ask for have anyone new ones available they don’t and when I ask to order one they can’t give me a time because GM said that there is either supply chain or a chip shortage. I am also not sure I want a 4 cylinder engine as my only choice.

  3. WIth only one factory producing the Canyons and Denalis, the shortages, the strike and GMs poor management, do you think the sales would drop. Why doesn’t Ford and the other’s have the problems that GM has with producing the midsize trucks?
