Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Cadillac Lyriq sales during the third quarter of 2023 kept the battery electric crossover in second place from last quarter in the electric luxury D-crossover segment when ranked by sales volume. The Tesla Model Y far outperformed all other contenders in this space, posting a 74 percent jump in sales to 94,000 units, while the Cadillac Lyriq (see running Cadillac Lyriq sales) followed in second with 3,018 deliveries – over twice as many as the previous quarter and exponentially more than during the year-ago quarter. The Audi Q8 e-tron moved up a spot to third with 2,748 deliveries, within 207 units of second. The Lexus RZ placed fourth with 1,394 sales, followed by the Jaguar I-Pace in last with a 36 percent drop in sales to 67 units.

From a segment share standpoint, the Lyriq earned a three percent share, as did the Q8 e-tron. The Model Y led with a dominant 97 percent segment share, while the RZ held a one percent share. The I-Pace earned a share of less than one percent.

The electric luxury D-crossover segment grew 87 percent to 101,227 units during Q3 2023, mostly due to growth posted by the Tesla Model Y but with the Lyriq contributing to that expansion this time.

The GM Authority Take

Cadillac Lyriq sales showed very healthy gains thanks to a ramp up in production. In fact, the Lyriq now has a cumulative 5,334 deliveries during the first three quarters of the 2023 calendar year, with 3,018 units sold this quarter, over double the deliveries of the previous one. That means Q3 2023 sales represent the Lyriq’s highest quarterly results in the U.S. market since launch.

And while sales volume of Cadillac’s first-ever all-electric vehicle remains exponentially behind that of the Tesla Model Y, this quarter showed hope that the balance should eventually change as GM continues to address production challenges that result in limited availability. In fact, deliveries of the Lyriq were nearly 84-fold over the limited levels posted a year ago.

Furthermore, Cadillac Lyriq conquest rate is now running at over 40 percent, meaning sales that nearly half of Lyriq buyers are to those who had previously purchased a vehicle from another, competing automaker.

GM is now shipping more 2024 Cadillac Lyriq trim levels, and production of the 2024 Cadillac Lyriq got underway on May 4th.

About Cadillac Lyriq

Introduced for the 2023 model year, the Cadillac Lyriq stands as the luxury marque’s first-ever electric vehicle.

The 2024 Cadillac Lyriq arrives with several important changes and updates. Among these is the introduction of the new Tech and Sport trim levels, with the Luxury trim level slotting between those. Furthermore, the 2024 Lyriq Luxury 3 and Sport 3 are now available with 20-inch wheels. All three trim levels (Tech, Luxury, Sport) are available in the U.S. with either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.

The 2024 Cadillac Lyriq is the first GM vehicle in North America to feature 5G network connectivity, standard on all trim levels. The 2024 Lyriq also gets a new power panoramic dual-panel sunroof along with a newly available Nappa Leather seating package, which is genuine leather made from calfskin or other types of soft cowhide, and a new trailer hitch.

Also expected for 2024 is the Cadillac Lyriq-V, a performance-focused variant with more power, more aggressive styling and standard all-wheel drive, along with upgraded suspension and brakes, plus unique badging.

Regardless of the trim level selected, 2024 Cadillac Lyriq maximum range-per-charge is 314 miles for rear-wheel-drive models, with motor output set at 340 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel-drive models deliver a maximum range of 307 miles per charge, with motor output set at 500 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. Additionally, the 2024 Lyriq AWD offers a new Velocity powertrain upgrade, boosting torque by 74 pound-feet, raising the peak rating from 450 pound-feet to 524 pound-feet. GM asserts that the zero to 60 mph time improves from the standard AWD variant’s 4.7 seconds to 4.4, trimming 0.3 seconds off the acceleration time. The 2023 Lyriq AWD will eventually be eligible for the Velocity upgrade as well.

The all-electric luxury compact crossover rides on the GM BEV3 platform, while GM Ultium batteries pair with GM Ultium Drive motors for motivation.

  1. TESLA excels at embarrassing the competition. It’s gonna take ten years before GM can manufacture the number of EVs in a year that TESLA alone can do in a month.

    1. I see the tesla Yugo’s everywhere. They are absolutely ugly and uninspired. The interior makes a golf cart look lux. Tesla is in for major problems as the others come up to speed. I’d be embarrassed to be seen in one of those yugos. I’ve also seen the polestars, Rivians, Audi’s, Porsche’s and even a couple lyriqs now. There are soo many better choices. So many.

    2. Tesla claimed they would be building 5k Model 3s a week in the last quarter of 2017. Instead they delivered less than 3k for the entire quarter.

They said they would be making 100k Semis a year by 2022. Instead they delivered two. Not two thousand, just two. And only 70 to date.

And now they’re confirming even more delays on production of the Cybertruck.

So maybe this is about how difficult it is ramping up new vehicles, and not how superior Tesla is.

      1. Every manufacturer has and will continue to struggle to ramp up BEV production, especially with batteries – the difference is that Tesla has finally figured it out – no legacy automaker (beyond Hyundai-Kia) is even close to figuring it out. The Model Y was released in 2020 and is now the top selling vehicle in the world, period. It took 3 years to go from zero to ~1M per year – GM hasn’t made 1M of any model since WW2. People can hate on Tesla and they may deliver late, but they never under deliver. Much of Tesla’s delays can be attributed to their insistence on vertical integration as it took a lot of resources/time/capital to set up – but now that they have it in place, they are way less reliant upon numerous suppliers – GM is the least vertical integrated OEM on the planet and are reliant on countless suppliers – GM’s Ultium battery partner (LG Chem) still can’t automate battery pack assembly despite GM dispatching top engineers to remedy this glaring problem. Therefore, GM remains battery constrained and will continue to be for the foreseeable future – meanwhile transplant OEMs are setting up factories in the US to scale BEV production to skirt the protectionist IRA mandate and be eligible for the IRA $7,500 while GM’s golden opportunity evaporates. You pointed out Tesla’s past shortcomings in regard to the CT, 3 and Semi, fair enough: the CT will begin sales November 30th, the Semi crushed every other class 8 in the NACFE 2023 Run on Less Electric Depot event and as of Q3 2023 the Model 3 (with scheduled factory shutdowns for refresh) alone (173,501) continues to easily out sell Cadillac (110,836) and Buick (124,690) in the US. Not to mention, the Model 3 in just 3 quarters of 2023 has outsold the Chevy Bolts’ accumulative sales since 2016 (140,337) by over 30,000 units. Despite Mary’s empty promises, GM will not catch Tesla. Without question, Tesla’s manufacturing strategies are the most automated and cost effective, while GM continues with an ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ approach. Even Toyota, the undisputed king of ICE production recently acknowledged Tesla’s superior manufacturing process and is going all in on copying Tesla’s production scheme.

  2. Glad to see numbers going up but GM really had the opportunity to have the Lyriq become a 100K unit vehicle annually but they just cannot figure out how to mass produce BEV’s

    1. its under the cadillac brand. that means expensive (even if it starts under 60k). normal people are not shopping cadillac and cadillac dealers are not equipped to deal with the masses of poors. so thats why its bombing.

thank mary msrp barra that only seems to push everything to the cadillac brand. if they marketed that as a chevrolet and put it on the chevy lots, it would sell a lot more.

  6. Last week I mentioned they finally got one in at my local dealership. This week it’s sold. If they are available, they will sell. Now to digress, the vehicle said final assembly was in Michigan. It also said the motor and whatever type of transmission it uses were from China. Going to numerous dealerships this week I’m surprised at how many foreign car models contain a higher percentage of American parts than their domestic counterparts. Ford only states where final assembly was, not where the parts came from. Another beef I have is the dealerships placing the Monroney sticker on a tinted rear window. You can’t read it.

  7. If GM/Cadillac is trying to sneak up on Tesla it is going to be a long term goal. GM is working on production. Tesla is working on reducing engineering and production costs. EV sales are going to be a brutal competition. Costs are going to be very important.
Most Tesla owners I know are satisfied with their vehicle.

  9. Cadillac is not having trouble selling the Lyriq, they are having trouble building and delivering them. It would be interesting to see the number of orders that are in place and I wish they would publish that information somewhere. That might provide a more enlightened picture of the Lyriq’s potential once GM figures out how to produce them in any numbers. I personally believe demand is quite high, but some people are starting to losing patience and GM will watch them switch to other makers.

    1. In February, 2023, ordered and received order code for a 2024 Lyriq L2 panoramic sunroof. Yesterday, the dealer told me they got the build sheet. It sounds like the next major steps are production starts and VIN assigned. That’s seems to be the next time I should get some sort of communication. We may receive the car by year end.

The dealer said they have a Sport available – not the color we want and far fewer options – so we politely declined.

The 8-9 month (so far) process has been attributed to parts shortages.

Anyone have information on HUD or AR-HUD availability?

  10. As of November 2023 there are probably over 50,000 existing Lyriq orders. It will take 17 quarters or over 4 years at 3000 per quarter to fill. My 2023 order which moved to be a 2024 might be a 2028 by the time its built. By then Toyota will have solid state batteries which will kill existing evs, including the Lyriq. GM is missing its window of ev market opportunity.

    1. “It will take 17 quarters or over 4 years at 3000 per quarter to fill.” This assumes Cadillac does not increase production – and according to this article and recent history, they have shown production increases when the parts are available. Don’t get me wrong, I am not thrilled with the rollout SNAFUs, but our ordered Lyriq is replacing a 2014 SRX with low miles. I’m not exactly in a rush for a new vehicle and, hopefully, the dealer’s SWAG of the EOY2023 becomes reality.

Solid state batteries will be good for EVs, but won’t “kill” them or the vehicles not using SSBs. If one wants everything for a specific technology to be ready on day one, no one would ever upgrade because there’s always something new “coming soon”. Think of how long we would have waited for cell phones if all the features available today had to be available on day 1…
