Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

The increase in GMC Savana sales during Q4 2021 makes it the only entry model its segment to post a positive gain in the full-size van segment. Even so, the Savana remained in last place, given that the Nissan NV has been discontinued as Nissan exits the commercial van segment. The NV moved a mere 75 units of remaining inventory.

The Ford Transit (see running Ford Transit sales) led the segment, with a 45 percent drop in sales to 20,946 units. The Ram ProMaster took second place with a 17 percent decline in sales to 14,184 units while The Blue Oval’s second entry, the Ford E-Series (see running Ford E-Series sales), was in third with a 10 percent decline in sales to 10,655 units. Meanwhile, the Savana’s corporate twin, the Chevy Express (see running Chevy Express sales) was is in fourth, with a 57 percent drop in sales to 7,766 units. The Savana placed fifth, right behind the Express.

The GM Authority Take

The GMC Savana (along with the Chevy Express) is an old vehicle that traces its roots back to the 1990s, and the duo remains the oldest model in the segment by a wide margin. They’re also the oldest GM vehicles currently in production. In Q4 2021, the Savana was the only entry the segment to post gain in sales volume.

The Savana and Express received a handful of minor changes for the 2022 model year, including the removal of the power window delete option, transmission oil cooler, and CD player option. More important changes were applied for the previous 2021 model year – namely the addition of the atmospheric 6.6L L8T V8 gasoline engine to replace the L96 motor (and its gaseous LC8 variant).

The GMC Savana and Chevy Express are both produced at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri and ride on the GM GMT 610 platform. Production of the 2022 GMC Savana and 2022 Chevy Express began at the Wentzville plant on November 22nd after GM pushed back the start date from late October.

We expect the current Savana and Express to continue to be sold at least through the 2023 calendar year, but GM has provisions to extend production through 2025, if it deems necessary. Each model year of the full-size vans will likely include minor changes, updates, and improvements, which has been the case since the inception of the current models.

BrightDrop EV410

In the meantime, several all-new battery-electric models are on the way to replace the two models. First will be the BrightDrop EV600 and BrightDrop EV410. These will be followed by a future electric Chevy commercial van, whose name has yet to be revealed. No word yet on whether there will be a GMC version, but we wouldn’t expect that to be the case as GM continues to reposition the Professional Grade brand to be more of a premium, consumer-focused model.

  1. George Washington crossed the icy Delaware River with his valiant men, artillery and weapons, he was cold freezing with no hope getting to New Jersey, suddenly General Adam Stephen with some horses and a few GMC Savanas pulled all the men and weapons in place for the morning attack…..

      1. I hope they leave these vans alone. They are still extremely popular I see them all the time.

        1. The GMT-800 pickups were great and contribute to the SUV boom but you don’t see ’98 Tahoes in the showrooms. At least based the vans off the last generation pickups.

IIRC another event was the vans were used during the Gold Rush of ’49…

  2. They’d sell more if they built more. Right now they are giving allocations mostly to Amazon and other large companies.

  3. These vans have lost market share to other makes with modern more flexible vans that also have more models. GMs previous generation of vans went virtually unchanged for 30 years. GM is either not interested in the van business or does not know how to react to competitive changes. Other makers will still be building ICE vans when gm quits building them.

  5. I hope they keep making these vans. Planning on buying one but waiting for this damn “supply chip chain” crap. Dealer says I need to wait a year for one. Best looking van on the market. I wish they put the oil cooler back on. Willing to pay $200 extra for it. Sheesh…….
Never gonna buy a EV and have to replace the batteries every 10 years for 10 grand. That SUCKS….
