U.S. GM Sales Down 43 Percent To 440,745 Units In Fourth Quarter 2021

GM sales decreased by 43 percent to 440,745 units during the fourth quarter of 2021 in the United States market. Sales fell at all four GM brands, including Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC.

“All year we focused on delivering as many of our high demand, capacity-constrained products as possible and the strategy worked,” said GM Executive Vice President and President at GM North America, Steve Carlisle, in a press release. “Our dealers and our engineering, supply chain, manufacturing and brand teams moved mountains to satisfy as many customers as possible in 2021, despite record low inventories caused by semiconductor supply chain issues during the third and fourth quarters,” he added.

  1. Lowercase gm #2 in domestic sales… Toyota (not focusing on short term money grabs like the BEV push) has rightfully taken the top spot. Cancel the Cruze, Sonic, and Impala. Meanwhile the Corolla keeps selling 200-300k units a year…

For some reason stock holders are still trying to bully gm stock north of $60. It would be nice to see Mary “the BEV blunder” Barra held accountable for some of her short slighted actions.

    1. You do realize COVID hit GM quite hard right and even if Toyota takes the lead now, GM will easily be re-crowned as we move forward when things settle and the chip shortage problem gets resolved slowly.

      1. It’s not if or when Toyota takes the lead anymore… they did. gm is no longer capitalized btw. I think you’ll see that gm will continue to struggle to move it’s subpar b/c segment offerings once the truck market is saturated.

      2. Auto shoppers are creatures of habit. This chip shortage could do long-term harm to General Motors. When an Equinox buyer gives in to a RAV4 or Cherokee do they eventually come back?

      3. People should realize Korean and Japanese companies squabbling over microchips made news in the middle of 2019… easily before the pandemic.

  2. It is hard to read Carlisle talking about “growing share”…when was the last time GM grew share?

    Reply
    1. When they BK’ed. I’d still rather see a healthy GM, yes IMO they do need to add a few mainstream cars and have less reliance on chipsets.

    2. It’s been since the late 70’s period that GM truly grew share in a meaningful way (multi year trend) based on strength of product in the market place. They were eating Ford and Chrysler’s lunch and the imports were barely a factor. They had just over 45% of the market in 1979.

Except for a few modest blips they’ve been trending down ever since to around 15% market share last year.

  3. Such a shame. I’ve been a GM man my whole life and I fear GM dies in ten years. Focus on profit and not market share and them GM has none of them. I’m out.

    1. Companies can be profitable and conservative. Toyota’s been doing it for decades.

  4. I have a question for the group. Why is Chevy Suburban and Tahoe tallied separate where as the Caddy Escalade/Escalade ESV and GMC Yukon/Yukon XL are lumped together.

  5. I have several gm vehicles 2 are 2019’s. My everyday grocery and errand runner is my Toyota. Every 5000 mi. the maint. light goes on I change oil and filter, rotate tires. A wash every once in a while and that’s it for the last eleven years. Not one trip to the dealer for anything. And they have free car washes!

  6. Maybe they should give Mary Barra a raise for poor handling of the CHIP SHORTAGE. Should Out Source more. Maybe Clueless Mary is spending to Much time in the basement with Sleepy Joe.
