The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Brazil sales suffered a considerable drop in December 2021, with the Bow Tie brand being unable to come close to the sales record set during the same time in 2020. However, as GM Authority reported last week, Chevrolet managed to (somewhat) regain its sales leadership in Brazil, becoming the best-selling automobile brand in the Brazilian market in December 2021 in terms of retail sales. Chevy still trailed Fiat in total sales by 1,777 units.

In fact, the 33,684 deliveries registered during December 2021 represent Chevrolet’s best monthly performance for the 2021 calendar year in the Brazilian market. This was achieved by the notable uptick in Chevy Onix sales on a month-over-month basis, with the subcompact car range surpassing the 20,000 sales mark for the first time in 2021. The increase enabled the Onix to recover its position as the best-selling vehicle in Brazil for the sixth consecutive year, despite suffering serious setbacks as a result of the global semiconductor shortage.

It’s worth noting, however, that Onix sales were down 30 percent year-over-year in December 2021, as production of the subcompact car range was idled for several months during the 2021 calendar year, resulting in high pent-up demand.

The Chevy Cruze, Spin and Tracker were the only models from the brand to post healthy gains during the final month of the 2021 calendar year, each posting double-digit gains. In particular, the Chevy Tracker stands out for having set a new sales record in Brazil with 7,936 deliveries during the month and a new high of 50,757 deliveries for the calendar year. Like the Onix, the subcompact crossover has significant pent-up demand thanks to healthy acceptance in the South American country.
