GM China Sales Down 23 Percent In Fourth Quarter 2021

GM China sales fell 23 percent to 737,300 units during the fourth quarter of 2021. Sales fell at Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and Baojun brands, while increasing at Wuling.

“As the challenges brought by the macro environment persisted, we stayed focused on delivering high-quality products and services to satisfy our customers while moving forward on our commitment to create a future of zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion,” said GM executive vice president and president of GM China, Julian Blissett, in a statement. “We are optimistic about the outlook for the industry and our performance in 2022,” he added.

General Motors does not provide sales results of individual models in China, but we do have the following information:

SAIC-GM Sales – Q4 2021

Fourth-quarter 2021 sales results at SAIC-GM – GM’s primary joint venture in China responsible for Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac operations – decreased 33.3 percent to 303,000 units:

Buick sales decreased 31.2 percent to 199,500 units

  • Demand for premium models – the GL8 and Avenir range –  remained strong

Chevrolet sales decreased 38.1 percent to 52,500 units

  • In Q4, the brand continued to enhance its product mix as demand for its high-end models steadily increased

Cadillac sales decreased 36.3 percent to 51,000 units

SAIC-GM-Wuling Sales – Q4 2021

Fourt-quarter 2021 sales results at SAIC-GM-Wuling – GM’s other Chinese joint venture responsible for Wuling and Baojun brands – decreased 13.1 percent to 434,300 units:

Baojun sales decreased 73.6 percent to 33,200 units

  • The brand expanded its electric vehicle portfolio with the introduction of the KiWi EV, a trendy four-seater with a personalized appearance to appeal to younger consumers

Wuling sales increased 7.4 percent to 401,100 units

  • Sales of its first crossover, the all-new Asta, got off to a strong start in Q4

During the complete 2021 calendar year, GM China sales decreased 0.3 percent to 2,891,900 units.

  1. I wonder if this slow down in the Chinese sales of gm’s primary brands makes gm refocus its attention to where it should be, back in the USA? Interesting that the Chinese market is ignoring the middle of the pack cars and purchasing the premium models or the bargain basement Wuhling brand.
