The GM Authority Take

Once again, GM Mexico sales posted a substantial decline in October as the automaker continues to grapple with the negative effects of a global semiconductor shortage and the forced discontinuation of the popular Chevy Beat. The October performance represents GM’s fourth consecutive decline in the Mexican market, with Chevy, Buick and GMC posting declines. Only Cadillac managed to post an uptick on a year-over-year basis.

In addition to the aforementioned discontinuation of best-selling Chevy Beat, the drastic drop in GM Mexico sales in October was driven by declines in the vast majority of models offered by the manufacturer in the country. In particular, the domestically-made Chevy Onix and the new Chevy Tracker suffered near-triple-digit declines due to minimal inventory as a result of idled production of both models as GM allocates chips to higher-margin models.

Chevrolet Captiva

Chevrolet Captiva

Only four of the more than 30 GM models managed to post gains in sales volume during the month, including the Chevy Aveo – which becomes the automaker’s best-seller in Mexico, Chevy Silverado, Cadillac Escalade and Buick Envision. In addition, the 2022 Chevy Captiva recorded one of its best results, becoming GM’s second best-selling model for the fourth consecutive month in the Mexican market.

Chevrolet Groove

Finally, the new Chevy Groove crossover recorded its first deliveries in October, finding 19 new homes during the month.
