The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet sales were essentially flat year-over-year during Q2 2024, down less than half a percent, with about half the models in the red.

Regardless of the reporting period, the all-new Chevy Trax continues to show exceptional gains, again logging the biggest increase among the Bow Tie brand’s 19 model lines, followed by the Chevy Colorado.

Though production for the Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV is officially over, the next-gen Chevy Bolt EV is on the way, scheduled to arrive in 2025 and for the 2026 model year. The Bolts, along with the Chevy Blazer EV midsize crossover and the Chevy Silverado EV full-size light-duty pickup truck, are joined this time around by the Chevy Equinox EV compact crossover.

Additionally, final units of the Camaro Convertible were produced this past November, and the last Camaro Coupe was built in December, bringing production of the muscle car’s sixth generation to an end without an ICE successor in the works. Looking forward, GM has confirmed a next-generation Chevy Camaro, which is likely to return as an EV pony car, with the Camaro name possibly applied to a broader EV sub-brand.

Utility sales, comprised of unibody crossovers and body-on-frame SUVs, did not fare well to start out the year, with only the Trax being the lone bright spot here. In fact, it actually took first place in its segment this quarter and even outsold the Chevy Equinox this time around by over 600 units, which heretofore has been the Bow Tie brand’s best-selling utility.

Meanwhile, the Chevy Traverse had the worst showing this quarter, following a trend from the previous quarter. It was followed by the Chevy Suburban, the Chevy Blazer, the Chevy Trailblazer, and the Chevy Tahoe.

The all-new Equinox and next-generation Traverse have arrived, soon to be joined by the refreshed Tahoe and Suburban models. Nothing new has been announced for the Trailblazer.

The Chevy Corvette showed gains, while the Chevy Malibu, the sole sedan offered here, did not. Production of the 2025 Malibu is scheduled to end this year to make way for the next-gen Bolt EV. However, GM began planning the next-generation Malibu back in late 2022, likely for the 2026 or 2027 model year.

Chevy’s truck lines showed gains across the board, with the Chevy Silverado lineup continuing to be the volume sales leader for Chevrolet and GM overall. The midsize Colorado posted the biggest gains this quarter.

Sales of the dated Chevy Express were actually positive as well, as were those of the niche Chevy LCF trucks. Along with the GMC Savana, the Express full-size van is an old vehicle that traces its roots to the 1990s, being the oldest GM model currently in production. While a much-needed overhaul is overdue, The General may have canceled any such plans, even though the automaker previously entertained plans to redesign the Chevy Express for the 2027 model year, keeping the ICE powertrain.

To date, GM has sold more than 3 million Chevy Express and GMC Savana units.

  1. Thanks Mary Barra for killing the Camaro. Had 7 different orders placed at multiple dealerships and non got accepted because GM didn’t want to build them.
