Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Trax sales during Q2 2024 claimed the top spot for the first time since the Bow Tie’s all-new entry-level subcompact crossover entered the market, having gone from a pedestrian offering to one that has catapulted to first place in just over a year in the crowded mainstream subcompact crossover segment of 21 entries when ranked by sales volume.

The Chevy Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales) led the field with a 153 percent leap in sales to 52,875 units and nearly 12K deliveries ahead of second. The Subaru Crosstrek traded places to take second place with a 19 percent bump to 41,095 units, while the Honda HR-V slid to third with a 39 percent upswing for 38,201 deliveries. The Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales), the Trax’s corporate cousin and Chevy’s second segment entry, moved up to fourth in spite of an 18 percent slide to 27,891 units. The Toyota Corolla Cross jumped up several spots with an 89 percent swell to 26,139 units to round out the top five. In addition to the two Chevy models, GM’s Buick currently fields three entries. The Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), the Trailblazer’s platform mate, placed 12th with an eight percent decline to 16,607 units. The Buick Envista (see running Buick Envista sales), the Trax’s VSS-F platform mate, took 14th place with 14,224 deliveries. The Buick Encore (see running Buick Encore sales), which is discontinued and indirectly replaced by the Envista, finished last moving 71 units.

The Trailblazer and Corolla Cross both posted a seven percent share, down four and up three percentage points, respectively. Meanwhile, the Encore GX and Envista both earned a four percent share, and the Encore’s share was nil.

The five GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer, along with the Buick Envista, Encore, and Encore GX, accounted for a cumulative 111,668 deliveries and a combined 29 percent segment share. That keeps The General solidly in first place overall, accounting for more than a quarter of all sales in this space.

Out of the 10 manufacturers represented here, three field multiple models in this space of 21 entries, though two of those models have been discontinued and will eventually fall off this list. When combining the sales volume of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in this order:

  • GM – 29 percent share, five models (the Buick Encore has been discontinued, but the remaining inventory continues to be sold)
  • Hyundai Motor Group
    • 20 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
    • 16 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
  • Subaru – 11 percent share, one model
  • Honda – 10 percent share, one model
  • Stellantis – seven percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued, but the remaining inventory continues to be sold)
  • Toyota – seven percent share, one model
  • Mazda – six percent share, one model
  • VW – five percent share, one model
  • Nissan – five percent share, one model
  • Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model

Typically, automakers fielding multiple entries in this segment enjoy better sales and higher deliveries. However, those with a single model, including Subaru and Honda, seem to hold their own comparatively, actually outpacing Stellantis even though it currently fields four models.

GM commanded first place again ahead of Hyundai Motor Group (which includes Kia) this quarter.

Overall, sales of mainstream subcompact crossovers again grew 24 percent to 386,665 units during Q2 2024, meaning Chevy Trax sales significantly outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Trax sales performance, which we’ve followed with interest, finally saw it shoot to the top in just one quarter. The Bow Tie brand’s all-new entry-level subcompact crossover recorded its first full year of marketplace deliveries in the previous quarter.

Additionally, the next-generation 2024 Trax helped GM claim a nine percentage point segment share advantage over the Hyundai-Kia conglomerate in terms of cumulative sales volume in the highly contested and crowded mainstream subcompact crossover segment to reign supreme again. Prior to the launch of Chevy’s all-new model, GM and Hyundai-Kia sales were neck-and-neck in this space.

About Chevrolet Trax

GM debuted the next-generation 2024 Chevy Trax in late 2022 as the Bow Tie’s new entry-level crossover. It incorporates Chevy’s latest ICE-based design language, taking after the Chevy Blazer crossover.

The new 2024 Chevy Trax is roomier than the preceding model and offers more safety features and tech, including six advanced safety and driver awareness technologies via Chevy Safety Assist and a standard eight-inch diagonal infotainment screen. It offers five trim levels, including 1LS, 1RS, 1LT, 2RS, and Activ. The LT, 2RS, and Activ trims get an 11-inch screen. Active Noise Cancellation and Adaptive Cruise Control are offered on most trims.

The 2024 Chevy Trax’s turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH engine develops 137 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 162 pound-feet of torque at 2,500 to 4,000 rpm. Additionally, the 2024 Trax boasts improved EPA fuel economy over the previous-generation 2022 Chevy Trax.

The 2025 Chevy Trax debuts the second model year for the nameplate’s second generation, ushering in a few critical updates and changes. That includes two new paint colors and an E85-compatible engine, making it a flex fuel-capable vehicle. Here are all the 2025 Trax wheels offered, along with exterior paint colors and interior colorways.

  1. Nice looking, good size and very good price. What’s not to like? Leaps and bounds over previous model.

  3. About time a main stream Chevrolet mass market vehicle dominates its sales segment. A case study should be made by gm about what went right in engineering designing and manufacturing the new Trax. It seems to me at least they made some very innovative and different positive product decisions that they don’t usually make.

    1. Sure, then watch the price jump to $32K to start. Not gonna happen. They’d have to build a factory or expand one to add it to the line, plus UAW wages are crazy high which would force the Trax out of the market segment that it’s dominating.

  7. The wife has a new 2025 Trax RS. We really like it, but the drivers seat is mechanical. This is a problem, because the mechanical seat isn’t able to account for the differences in people’s anatomy. I’m not sure it is a car for older people because of this fact. In fact, both front seats should be electric 8-way seats. Simply charge for it, the price point on these vehicles are reasonable.

    Reply
    1. Uh, what? The seat moves in the same range, just electrically. If you want power seats, get the Envista where they are an option. I’m 55 and I fit just fine in mine and am perfectly capable of being comfortable. My 72 year old mother has no problem in the passenger seat. Age isn’t the issue.

  8. The poor Dodge Hornet sure isn’t getting any love.

It’s amazing what GM can do when they make a product that doesn’t down right suck, that is reasonably priced, the dealers stock them AND the sales staff actually knows what it is and that it exists.

Now if GM would just do the same with a more entry level sedan car, just think what it could do.

  9. I was just admiring one in a parking lot this morning. The body side surface development is almost sublime. But my trailblazer has the 1.3, and the aforementioned 8-way power driver’s seat. It is also a looker. Tough thing for the Trac is the 6% gross margin. Surprised that the Envista isn’t moving faster.

  13. We have a new 2025 Chevy Trax RS2. We love it. No complaints here. Great pick up and acceleration too for an SUV. Our price point was about 28 for the full package. Fully loaded. I think the updated interior and big screen is great. Everything about it is attractive to us for our needs. It’s roomy and very comfortable. Drives smooth. Maneuvers well and great safety features

I think it’s a matter of what your needs are. For us this Trax is comparable to the rav 4 at a much lower price point of about 30 to 50p less in some cases.
It’s got a great rating; very high actually for reliability and safety thus far if you check the reports..

It’s about time Chevy competes and comes out with a reasonable; updated model that’s attractive to consumers.
