Buick sales grew six percent to 45,445 units in Q2 2024 in the United States. Shown here is the best-selling, first-ever Buick Envista.

The GM Authority Take

U.S. Buick sales were down across the board this quarter, save for the one shining star – the first-ever subcompact Buick Envista, the premium marque’s new entry-level crossover that indirectly replaces the discontinued Buick Encore. The all-new Envista carried the load to enable Buick to show positive sales gains overall.

The premium marque only sells unibody crossovers, with four current models, though the remaining inventory of its fifth model, the Encore, continues to be sold.

The refreshed 2024 Buick Encore GX doesn’t seem to be benefiting from its update, though we’ll see how things go for the refreshed 2024 Buick Envision, which just arrived. The subcompact Buick Encore GX offers an all-wheel drive option that the Envista doesn’t, and the Buick Envision is a slightly bigger compact model.

This past spring, GM debuted the all-new 2025 Buick Enclave, a bigger version of the premium marque’s flagship three-row, full-size crossover. With a sales decline matching that of the Envision, the performance of the next-generation Enclave will also be a wait-and-see proposition as it makes its way to dealers.

With only four models on sale, the Tri-Shield brand counts on buyers wanting a premium option in the marketplace, even when being cross-shopped against offerings from fellow divisions within GM.

As the new kid on the block, the Envista is already outselling the Envision and Enclave and nearly matched that of the Encore GX, with the new entry-level crossover alone accounting for 31 percent, or nearly a third, of all Buick sales.

Regarding the brand, Buick has applied a consistent trim level structure and design language to its lineup, both inside and out. For each model, the Tri-Shield brand now offers the same three trims: Preferred, Sport Touring (ST), and Avenir. This is the result of GM bringing its new Y trim strategy to Buick.

This provides consistency and simplicity for buyers. For each of Buick’s entries, buyers can choose a base model, go with sporty, or select luxury, while every trim offers a premium option in the marketplace with similar styling. It’s really a matter of picking the right size for a given lifestyle.

As Buick puts it, each of its models is “Exceptional by design.”

  1. For the first time since 1916, there is no Buick dealer in the metro area where I live. Half a million people. This year one dealer was bought and they dropped Buick, and the other no longer has Buick since last April. What is GM thinking? There are more than a few new Buicks around here!

    1. @young man: This is the sad way of thinking by GM. First, they kill every Buick sedan leaving them with 4 SUV/CUV’s. Then they greatly reduce the number of Buick dealers. Why?

For years they have told us that Buick survived the 2008 re-structure because the brand is so popular and sells so well in China. But now what? GM sales have been falling fast in China and if/when that Buick market dries up, will GM keep Buick in the states? I think not.

  2. Thus far for 2024, total sales:

    Malibu 69,109
    Total Buick 89,830

So 4 models, all SUV/CUV, and they are about 21,000 units ahead of just the Malibu on it’s own. Guess those Buick models aren’t selling that well, so it must be time to cancel them. Right GM?

    1. Wrong. Think of the profit per car.

      1. Sorry Jeff+G, that’s absolutely not the full story. But keep telling yourself that. So far all this year, Buick has had higher incentives than the Malibu. That’s just one part of it.

        1. Wrong again, but you can tell yourself all the stories you need to. Bottom line is, and will continue to be – profit. Last time I looked GM is rolling in the greenbacks. Have a nice weekend!

          1. Higher incentives and/or incentivized rates erode profit. Look it up.

    2. Combine it with Cadillac? Could that be an option? I was also in in the same mind-frame as you thinking Caddy and Buick were underperformers until I compared some numbers at a wider level.

Your 2024 YTD number of 89,830 is actually not bad when considering the competition. Note this is ONLY the US sales numbers:

      Acura (53,371)
      Alfa Romeo (4,779) <— Ouch!
Audi (93,282) <—Yes I know this is more, but only slightly more and its a much more established premium brand.
Cadillac (73,904) <— I put this here to also compare Caddy with the competition.
      Genesis (31,821)
      Infiniti (28,027)
Jaguar LR (37,810) <— Jaguar and Land Rover combined. Yes they are more premium but if anyone is hurting here its Jaguar.
      Lincoln (48,817)
Porsche (32,323) <—Ok this is probably technically a luxury low volume brand but they do have two SUVs that are popular models. Majority of that number must be Macans and Cayennes,
      Volvo (62,882)

Buick certainly could do better. Especially when compared to GMC (281,882). But is it really doing that bad as many seem to think? I mean selling more than Acura and Volvo is a nice accomplishment. It will never reach BMW, Mercedes, or even Lexus sales numbers but it surpassed all these other ones on the list and almost reached Audis numbers. I imagine GMs move to eliminate the Premier trim on their Chevrolets and replacing them with sporty RS and rugged Activ trims as the top of the line trims was intended to push people over to Buick. If you were considering a luxury Traverse now you either get a sporty RS or go over to Buick for an Enclave.
